MLG has had a surprisingly decent population lately. It usually hangs around just above a 1000 players. Super Slayer would be super jealous.
Also, MLG is the best playlist.

Only because it's consistently ZB. Even the player movement speed doesn't bother me that much in the default lists.

The Kig-Yar, commonly known as Jackals, return in Halo 4 as part of the alien Covenant that continues to threaten humanity and the UNSC. The Storm Jackal features the new, more reptilian look seen in Halo 4.

Hey look, actual official comment on the Jackals looking different.

So, are we going to get an explanation for this reptilian appearance other than just assuming blindly it's an artistic choice?

They were caught in a bad thunderstorm, hence the name. Lightning strikes deformed their beaks.

Hire me 343.

Zero bloom, no sprint, nice movement speed, better maps, good objective gametypes on maps that work well with those gametypes, consistent weapon spawns, no AAs at spawn etc. etc.
There are so many things they do well.

Artistic choice or no, it's a really bad design. There have been a few inexplicably ugly designs with Halo 4 so far (sniper rifle).

The way good competitive Halo should be.

Yeah, but the Zero-Bloom only playlist was tried, had a chance, and went nowhere in population.

TU ZB Beta?

We were playing with some kid the other night and he says "What's TU mean?" Probably what 99% of the people who play the game ask themselves when they see it.

Rename Super Slayer to Team Slayer & put it on top and watch the population magically grow by 7K.

Let's not be stupid.

I can almost guarantee you if you just replaced Team Slayer with Super Slayer like 80% of the people wouldn't even notice. A lot of people don't know what TU means, or ZB means, and only play the playlist that's called Team Slayer

The annoying thing is Megalo supports detecting lame duck rounds and could end the game early. We know for a fact because Grifball does it. Neither Bungie nor 343 seem to want to implement it in one-sided gametypes though.

I'm just spouting off but Objective's population would be helped if they added it. People wouldn't have to hang around for lame duck rounds and decide between taking a quit penalty or getting teabagged for 10 minutes by the other team. If I was a new player, I wouldn't come back to the playlist again after a couple of those.

If they don't want to add lame duck detection, the very least they could do is make all 1-sided gametypes 2 rounds. Each team gets a chance, win lose or tie, then we move on. They did this to BTB Territories in Halo 3 and it was great.
Reach BTB Territories has 2 rounds as well I believe. Ideally, one-flag and one-bomb should just be two rounds with unlimited scores (play for a set time), but the lame duck rounds should be eliminated at the very least.
Objective changes
Excellent post, agreed on pretty much everything.
Wat? Right now the MP feels ridiculously good. MLG players are working on the MP strategy guide and other community players are helping us polish certain modes. Eerie silence is not silent here, it's loud, loud crunching.
Interesting, I have no memory of doing this. :p
:(
All of the MLG pros in this thread have already said they'll stick to customs only with no MLG list, let's see how long that lasts.

Well who cares, I'll trade a few dozen players in MM for a playlist that can actually be updated and can have a broader appeal while still having a good set of hardcore gametypes. Take the settings that MLG is using, or something similar to what they/other competitive communities like and expand on it with more gametypes and maps that are fitting. The MLG playlist has 8 options without DLC, some more variety would be nice.

No it makes more sense to be wishy washy and have two redundant playlists and then let the failed experiment (Super Slayer) drag on like some vestigial organ.

TU should have been global (minus Invasion). Non-global game updates don't work.

Population would have been the same, just like you said, if they had renamed it. Team Slayer is a brand, people want to play the brand.

You do not even have to do that. Just rename Super Slayer to a not stupid sounding name* which does not give a completely wrong impression. What do normal people think about Super Slayer? Some fun gametypes like dino blasters etc.

*If we only want a population rise.

If Halo 4 did have a "Classic" playlist with no Armor abilities, and higher movement speed, the population/activity would be much higher than if it were called "MLG". For a lot of my friends (and probably many other Halo players) just the term "MLG" turns them off from trying the playlist.

A lot of MLG playlist players probably don't care but it would be nice to have a bigger population for it in Halo 4.

I have an idea.

Delete Super Slayer, replace it with a TU playlist. Remove AL and Camo, etc. put it at 5v5 so it offers something that Team Slayer doesn't have, and turn on party matching so parties play parties.

I can't think of a name for it though.

It was handled all wrong. The people that cared wanted the update, the people that don't care won't notice, except their armor lock won't be as game-stopping now, god forbid.

Are you talking about Halo Reach? Because if you higher 4's movement speed, the game is going to be fast. Fast like CoD.

Whats your reasoning for that?

I play Invasion alot (often have 6 people) and having to go back and forth between bleed through, bloom, etc its frustrating.

You just said updates have to be global, Im not sure I understand.

Even the Vanilla/TU division was handled wrong. If they were going to do the split TU thing then have an actual split. Keep old playlists Vanilla, make all new ones TU. What do they as one of their first moves? Introduce TU to Multi Team, which is an AR start playlist with Rocket Hog Race. Because people really wanted bleedthrough in fucking Rocket Hog Race.

Then they put the TU on BTB, even though there was ALREADY a TU BTB, so now your two semi-redundant lists are truly redundant, as the choice was removed. Then TU'd Rumble Pit, so you didn't have a choice between playing TU in Anni FFA or playing non-TU in Rumble Pit.

Then they introduce a new playlist in Squad DLC, and it's.. Vanilla?

At this point, this is your choice for non-fringe/specialty Vanilla Reach:

Team Slayer
Squad DLC

This is your choice for non-fringe/specialty TU Reach:

Everything else

Seriously. Two playlists. Why is Vanilla still around? Remove the stupid TU acronym from the gametype names because most of your playerbase doesn't even know what TU means, make the TU global, and actually accept and take the criticism and ragequitting from players that liked Vanilla Reach, just like Bungie had to do when they made the Halo 2 TU and the Halo 3 TU. Drop the cool uncle bullshit.

I think the design is pretty uninspired but leaving opinions aside, I would like to know if they are going to bother explaining an obvious (and almost unneeded) change.

Right now, it seems like change for the sake of change. They keep many elements the same but why change the ones that they are changing? I can understand the Chief's armour. I can understand the UNSC logo and FUD design and things like that. But changing up the Covenant is a bit more upfront. Millions of players are already familiar with these enemies and I'd hate to think they'd change some of them so drastically without even offering some kind of explanation.

343 have made very loud noises about integrating the extended universe and keep a tighter canon going forward and that's great but they are starting afresh by significantly breaking canon in lots of small ways and it's not a good start.

If I have to compile a list of little silly things that need explaining, I'll do so. Anything to get an answer.

I meant a slight boost to account for no sprint like Reach's MLG playlist. Halo 4 without sprint still seems a bit slow to me.

They aren't going to explain why the artists changed how things look other than a reason you won't be satisfied with.

I'd be happy with just "it's an artistic change" for most things. I'm very reasonable.

Something like the Jackals suddenly looking reptilian can't be as easily explained though. That sort of thing requires some kind of in-universe explanation.

Oh crap @ the Turtles team at Arena Gaming stream. They got steaked. One complain about the gameplay stream is; there is no gameplay sound.

Alright, did anyone else here buy Halo 1 Xbox Originals? I accidentally left Anniversary back in Nebraska and was looking to get my Halo 1 fix, but it won't let me download it. It gets to a random % finished then goes "Couldn't download Halo: Combat Evolved". I go to the download page and it prompts me to buy the game for 800msp even though I own it and it's in my DL history, but if I press A to do so it just gives me the Download Again screen.

Can anyone else succesfully download theirs, or did MS bork something here. It's not my internet connection because I downloaded like 10GB of RB DLC and games before it, and 15GB of DLC and games after it, and just tried it again now. It's specifically CEGonD.

I think this is probably true for a lot of people.

I'd personally be significantly more apt to play in something like Team Hardcore.

Agreed. MLG is a synonym for asshole, tryhard, loser for a lot of people.
It's sad but I certainly have talked my fair share of shit so I guess I'm part of the problem lol. I'm trying to get better

I'd like to be able to keep some Bungie Reach until 4/Destiny.

An MLG playlist doesn't need to exist if we have Team Hardcore.

MLG playlist is simply a generous offer from the game creators. Let's people interested in MLG play in MLG settings without having to try and round up 8 people.

A Team Hardcore would be nice, but Team Hardcores in other Halo's have only been no radar, precision weapon starts.

MLG has much more bigger differences. Gotta see how MLG changes up Halo 4.

It's hard to get too worked up about the Beam Rifle/Focus Rifle distinction when the description for the Jackal calls the Plasma Pistol a Carbine, as Blueblur1 said.

Here's hoping it's a Focus Rifle.
I've said this before, but I think the sandbox benefits without enemy wielding long-range weapons. There's no trial-and-error with enemies who wield a sniper rifle or focus rifle. I can't think of an encounter where I'm not pressured to take those guys out first. You can't leave them for later; you have to take them out as soon as you enter the area.

The Focus rifle is better than the sniper rifle, yes, but even so: Halo 1 had it right in this regard.

Edit: Goddammit, second post of the day and it's at the bottom of the page. Weee!
