It all depends on the end-game content though, and how much is there to do to pass time (besides grinding).

From what I understand they've tossed out a lot of conventional MMO thinking in order to make it more like a traditional Dragon Quest game, the long term appeal is presumably similar to DQIX except with regular patches. Players describe it as DQIX as an MMO with a better story.

I never thought in my life I'd see a DQ game bomb in Japan. Assuming they can keep all 400k for longer than 1-3 months that's about as big as DQX will get.

It is absolutely not a bomb. It did better first week than many were expecting.

Oh, you know it bombed? What were the shipment numbers for it then? What were SE's expectations for it? Tell me.

First of all the game is not done selling. It will continue to sell in the coming weeks. Second of all did you forget the Wii U version. This is VERY far from a bomb. Hell we were having the discussion on whether the game could hit a million ever a while ago.

Sony deserves a lot of blame in this. But come on. Not a single Vita game in the Top 30? That's pathetic. If I were a publisher I wouldn't support the device either.
Publishers thinking like this is exactly why it's failing, even more so than lack of suport by Sony themselves.

Nintendo is the only one who could carry a console on 1st party alone. If 3rd party publishers don't support Vita, then how on earth could it possibly do well? P4G has shown that software on Vita sells and also leads to hardware boosts. It's still a relatively new platform, if devs develop for it and it builds a library people will buy it.

Mixing the trackers, I could say: very positive result for DQ considering its nature. let's wait for ST % in order to better understand SE expactations.
Mario second week is not as strong as I expected, but the most important thing to me is wait and see which will be its "standard" result for a normal week after the launch, to better understand its possible legs.
A lot of 3ds games are holding nicely, from RF to DQ to LBX1.5 (100k mark accomplished).

Very strong 3DS result after the launch of the XL, especially considering that the normal 3DS performed 40K again.
Obviously, ver positve result for the Wii, also if it will be just a temporary peek.

Vita continues to struggle, but that's not surprising considering its actual lineup (in terms of crucial games for the market).

Aside from an overly optimistic reading of P4 sales, I cannot think of one compelling reason for a 3rd party to choose Vita over 3DS.

Maybe some visual novel games? Anyway the thing with Persona 4 or even Time Travelers is that you can't really know if P4G would have done the same or better on 3DS or TT would have done the combined amount if it hadn't gone multiplatform, so saying Vita can sell games isn't really a good draw for a 3rd party. We'll see soon enough how they feel though

Also I think we can now extrapolate that DQX servers hold about 10k players each. SE had to double the number of servers this week to 40, and with about 400k sales the math adds up neatly.

Most are 2ch trolls, right? Same with DQ IX if I remember right.

Correct.

I absolutely do not see anything positive to spin here. Those numbers are pitiful.

It's more than the entire FFXI LTD in Japan.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Yes, right now there are almost no reasons for developers to be on Vita. Maybe just for very niche developers ( being on a platform with few games and a pretty hardcore audience which should buy them). Let's see how Hatsune Miku will do, however.

Maybe the assumption that PSP owners naturally would move on to Vita. Also, it's a fact there's not many Vita games right now, so the few that actually do release might sell well due to the currently active userbase.

So let me ask again: How do you know it didn't sell well? Do you know the shipment number and how high SE's expectations were?

You have a point here, but I guess if you release a semi-huge game on 3DS there's a lot of competition and people may pass on it, while Vita owners are kind of starving for new games right now and will more likely buy it.

Why would you think that? I don't really see why it would sell more if it were the exact same game, just 3DS exclusive.

That's why developers flocked on Wonderswan instead of GBC.

Good numbers for 3DS, wii and DQX. However, about the comparison with FFXI, doesn't FFXI needs the adapter and the HDD to work with the ps2? You can not even use the wifi with the ps2 if I remember correctly.

This is a good point. FFXI sales were limited by the expensive HDD and network adapter, so the comparison isn't completely fair. But still, DQX sales are off to a great start.

Eh, it'd be possible, but recently we've seen lots of new releases for 3DS, and basically all of them did good, or are still doing good.

I mean

13./10. [3DS] Kobitodzukan: Kobito Kansatsu Set <ETC> (Nippon Columbia) {2012.07.26} (¥5.040) - 12.169 / 38.315 (-53%)

40k in two weeks for this? Seriously?

It's still too early to say the game succeeded or failed, it could maintain a large userbase or fall off the surface of the planet in the coming months, but going by opening numbers alone, it is doing well.

Even if it's DQ, it's an MMO, so it's not surprising.

This and Run for Money -which is still sold out in many stores- are the proofs that 3DS is an healty ecosystem for third parties, imo.

Oh so it will never sell another copy?

Don't you know? It's over. And people is surely starting returning their copies to stores, so next week it'll be 200k lower, and in some weeks, it'll be at just 100 copies sold.

What's that game about? lol

Anyway, taken form the Vita OT:
BTW late September [Japan] will see a bunch of Vita game releases --

9/20 - Little Big Planet Vita (MSRP 3,990 yen -- awesome)
9/27 - Ys Celceta (reg and LE)
DJ Max Technika Tune (reg and LE)
Earth Defense Force 3 Portable (reg and double pack)
Nobunaga's Ambition
Danboru Senki
I believe that releasing all of these in a relatively short timeframe may boost Vita sales quite a bit and give it some legs. Does anyone have the sales numbers of the other LBPs, Ys, DJ Max? Just curious.

I'd wager that in Square-Enix's opinion, it was a success.

To contextualize this, Square had to rapidly double the number of servers after launch and are trying to expand individual server capacity. Players have been reporting extremely crowded peak times even after that.

I could be wrong, but at first glance that list is not at all impressive from a sales perspective.

LBP and Ys are not good sellers at all.

You really think these games are going to boost sales??

FFXI had global appeal. This is pretty much it for DQX. DQX for the Wii tanked in my opinion.

Samething I'd expect with toast being sold for next gen toaster with the DQX name on it.
You have to be kidding me. You've been shown several times that it's the most successful console MMO in Japan's history, but apparently that's a bomb? And then you claim the reason is to international numbers, despite the fact that it hasn't even been released yet? You're a fool.
