LTTP: Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack In Time

Platinum'd it yesterday. Now I'm scared to try out the 4 player co-op one.

Very funny, Dr. Nefarious was always a funny villain (awesome duo with LAWREEEENCE, too).
The challenge puzzles during the Clank's part gave me a hard time (the first one was harder than the last 2, though, which is weird).

A bit short though, and on the easy side, even to collect everything. And I think Up Your Arsenal is still the better game. (Haven't played a lot of Tools of Destruction, that said.)

I started this a year ago, but never made it past the first bit. Definitely need to go back. Loved the one before it, and I love stories/games about time travel. I'll probably get back into it soon, then pick up that HD collection of the older games.

i played and finished all 4 one for the first time a few weeks ago by myself and i found it quite enjoyable.

Not as good as the main ratchet games but still solid and still has its moments

My favorite Ratchet game. So good in every respect. Platinumed it and I'm clamoring for the collection and A NEW GAME by Insomniac.

One of my favorite Ratchet games behind UYA and Going Commando.

Tools of Destruction is okay, nothing really special about it. I stayed away from A4O after reading so many mediocre reviews.

Just another Ratchet game. I can't remember what sets it apart from the others other than the Clank puzzles (the hardest ones made me feel temporally and spatially retarded, some serious puzzling here). Not a condemnation though, it's one of the best games of the gen. I simply never get tired of this series' formula and it's one of the few games that are genuinely funny.

Definitely the cream of the crop of Ratchet & Clank games, along with Up Your Arsenal and Going Commando. Definitely one of the best games this generation.

We better be getting a mainline Ratchet & Clank game on the PS4, Insomniac.

It's definitely my favorite in the series, with Up Your Arsenal a close second. One of the only games where I went through New Game+ immediately after finishing it for the first time.

In regards to All 4 One, I avoided it like the plague until it came for free with PS+, at which point I figured I may as well just give the damn thing a try.

It's definitely the worst Insomniac-developed Ratchet & Clank game, and the story, while retaining much of the humor, is really weak (weak in a R&C sense, that is), but I still had quite a lot of fun with it (just for the record, I played it through solo). The first level is absolutely, beyond terrible, but the game picks up pretty quickly after that. There's a lot wrong with the game but I still found myself having quite a time with it.

Really enjoyed it. The time based based puzzles were really well done, made you think without being frustrating.

This should have been their final R&C, gone out on a high note. They went from critical acclaim for ACiT to the stinker that was All4One. What a shame.

I really feel IG doesnt even try to make a great R&C game. Up Your Arsenal is the best one and even had a great multiplayer. The PS3 versions (which I figured would be better and was a reason for me even buying a PS3) are much easier and no have mulitplayer. It also feels like they ran out of ideas and are just repeating the same type of gameplay, unlike a Mario game. They are very short games. I refuse to buy a Crack in Time for these reasons.

Loved the game to bits. I should try to Platinum it sometime soon, after I get done with my massive backlog

Making the giant assumption I'll ever finish the backlog.

Probably my second or third favorite R&C behind Going Commando and the original, with Going Commando probably my favorite. I actually just started replaying it the other day, and I just finished up Tools of Destruction, which was a decent first attempt at a PS3 R&C, but is probably the weakest entry in the mainline series in my opinion.

I just hope the main Insomniac team returns to the series someday and expands on what made A Crack in Time so good. Loved the open hub world and sense of exploration the game brought back to the series. I feel like another sequel could be awesome, but at this point I think a big shakeup to the series might be necessary, and no, I'm not thinking something along the lines of Co-op or Ratchet Deadlocked.

I got it in a buy 2 get 1 free deal the year it came out but haven't tried it yet. Actually just pulled it out yesterday with the intention of giving it a go soon.

Haven't ever played any of the Ratchet games, so I'm excited to see what they're all about.

As a long time R&C fan I would say this rates high in the series. I enjoyed the game and Plat'd when it came out and it ranks right up there with UYA. I also enjoyed Tools but those ol' timey bots get on my nerves.

The 4 player co-op isn't a true blue R&C game I believe, just in the same universe.

Absolutely brilliant game, although it kind of had a sour first impression on me when I tried playing it straightaway after playing both Tools of Destruction and Quest for Booty.

All 4 One is definitely better with people. Only played it myself with one other person, but still...

I platinumed (is that a word?) it too when if first came out. I thought it was ok but not as good as the game before (not QFB).

Im definately buying the next one day one. Love the series. Cant wait to get the remastered ones.

I was one trophy away from getting the platinum. I liked Crack in Time more than Tools of Destruction myself. A fine game.

The R+C series is one of the very few Sony exclusives that I really love.

I'm waiting for the next PS3 revision/price cut (and/or me having $$$) to pick it up and I am DIEING to play them! (well, not the co-op one...)

I'd have probably gotten a PS3 ages ago except that my roommate had one a year or two back and I just borrowed his and played through most of the games that interested me, sans Ratchet and Clank since he didn't own them.

My 4th favourite game (Going Comando, UYA then Size Matters) A good return to form for the series.

Avoid All4One unless you have kids or a few buddies to play with, it is not a great single player game. I can't bare to put the disc in and play it on my own again, and online match making is small and very hit and miss.

Checking out ToD, and Q4B (On sale) is recommended. Both good R&C games.

loved the game but i curses the person who came up with my blaster runs hot that kept me from platinum >:/
Trophy is easier to get if you just use two players, they don't crank up the difficuilty much, if at all.

Best R&C game after Going Commando. Highlight of the series, especially after the disappointing Tools of Destruction

tools of destruction is best left skipped over.

i thought a crack in time was amazing, though. my favorite in the series, and more of a successor to going commando than any other in the series.

also the best ps3 game from 2009.

I just completed this game yesterday! Amazing game, one of Playstation's best, beaten only by Uncharted 2 & 3. Very rewarding and fun.

EDIT: Also, some nice post-game content with the extra boss fight and the
museum
.

Amazing R&C game, easily the most polished one yet.

Some parts had an almost ethereal quality to them, i remember walking on one of those moons in first person perspective with the sun coming up from the horizon, collecting bolts while listening to that space-jazz radio station.

good times...

The game was my GOTY in 2009. Amazing. It was the first game that i ever bothered to platinum. The time puzzles for getting the platinum trophy were freaking hard.

It's Insomniac's best game in years, imo. I absolutely love it, and it's much better than Tools of Destruction and Quest for Booty.

Though nothing can beat Quest for Booty's theme. If only that had been a more complete, fully-fledged game.

Great timing on this thread, I finished the game myself a week ago.
I first started to properly try this series with Tools and Destruction but shelved it halfway through on account of the fact that I just wasn't having much fun with the gameplay at all, so it took me some time to finally try a Crack in Time and I can say that it was a better game that the previous PS3 entry.

I'll start with the good stuff...

- Nefarious: Part of the drive to continue further in this game was to make it to the next Nefarious cutscene, this guy cracks me up, love the design as well.

- Clank gameplay: I've always liked Clank more than Ratchet, so maybe i'm bias in his favour when I say his sections were more interesting than the rest of Ratchets game. The recording puzzles were smart and while the platforming is hardly taxing it's still better than everywhere else in the game. Visually the sections that took place in Clank's mind (I think?) were pretty stunning. It's a shame Clank was confined to the great clock, he could've used some more location variety but obviously that wouldn't make much plot sense. Speaking of which the plot itself was more than enough to keep interest so good job there.

- Hover boots: Makes journeying as Ratchet much more fun and enjoyable, especially with that long jump, I never wanted to take the things off if I could help it.

- Mr Zurkon: I swear this guy is just the most useful thing in the game and kind of funny to boot. Actually on this note I felt the humour in general was just a lot better than tools, maybe I was just in a bad mood when playing the previous game but the comedy just irritated me back there, I was much more jovial about it here.

- Filled with Content: Clearly Insomniac put a lot of effort into their games, this game is packed with content, unlockables, collectables. Presentation is great as well from the visuals in general to the little scenes describing your latest weapon.

- Small planetoids with platforming: occasionally dropping onto a uncharted planet and being set on some sort of small obstacle course was almost always enjoyable.

And now for what I wasn't such a big fan of...

- Core Ratchet gameplay: honestly I should've seen this coming from the previous game, my main flaw with this series is despite everything else i'm just not that big a fan of the core gameplay, lots of crate smashing, ammo emptying, enemy gauntlets with the occasional moment of platforming respite only to be whisked back into another pile of enemies. Damage wise the game seems to take jumps every now and then (probably when new armour is available) which can come as a bit of a spike at times when all of a sudden Ratchet keels over in mere seconds and since i've never been great at this whole third person shooting stuff it wasn't exactly uncommon to have to repeat some enemy waves. While you have plenty of tools at your disposal some feel too weak or situational, in the longer punch ups it turns into an everything but the kitchen sink approach, i'd say some enemies could do with perishing faster but eh, I guess everyone else enjoys this stuff, at least it doesn't use a cover system with regenerating health.

Also it doesn't look like much has changed on this front since the PS2 games but honestly I can't remember too much about them so I may be dead wrong, it sort of gives me a kirby series vibe in which the main gameplay has solid foundations but seems to be in some sort of unmoving limbo where not much is changed about it through many entries aside from minor tweaks, I guess if it's not broken it doesn't need fixing but I think the action side of things could use a shot in the arm.
But feel free to rip my apart of this stuff has been taking leaps and bounds since the PS2 games.

Space Dog Fights: Well this was just unpleasant, I never enjoyed these at all. The actual space travel in itself was fine though.

Bosses: Not because they were boss battles in general but they seemed to have health bars that were just perhaps a bit too big, it turns what few bosses there were into a bit of a slog.

Small planetoids where you fight like 50 enemies: Well at least the groovitron can get a big "party" going in these cases, actually this is also a gripe with some of the late game sections where it's just a bunch of enemy waves over and over.

Okay I think that's it, I do want to like these games more than I actually do, everything is in the right place but my own qualms with the action side of things seems to hinder that, clearly if I were in control of things they'd but more less shooting and much more jumping but that would probably mortify the rest of you, I may try another one of these games somewhere down the line but I still don't see myself jumping in on any entry day 1.

Oh yeah, I guess the summary of the game itself that it's a good one.

If you think Dr Nefarious is funny, play Up Your Arsenal, I couldn't stop laughing the whole game.

And Mr Zurkon is awesome too.

Obligatory:

I always found the combat arena slightly disappointing after the series high point of Up Your Arsenal's brilliant Annihilation Nation. Not to mention the weapons weren't quite as enjoyable as previous games, with the focus leaning too heavily on passive weapons, which aren't nearly as satisfying to use as the more traditional weapons. The end-game was a little disappointing in that Ratchet was never re-united with his fellow Lombaxes, and it just felt like there could and should have been more to close out the trilogy.

That said, these are minor complaints and Insomniac did a fantastic job in terms of game design and the general aesthetic; at times it felt like the most glorious fireworks display you've ever seen, with it's bold, cartoony palette of explosive primary colours. The hover boots were a god-send and splitting up the duo was an inspired design decision. Not to mention the fantastic voice acting.

I hope Insomniac has another crack at a retail Ratchet game, this time for the PS4, I think the lessons learned from their PS3 development would stand them in good stead for a next-gen R&C game.

Quest for Booty was released as retail in Europe, as is the upcoming Ratchet and Clank: Q-Force (Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault), so all R&C games have been retail games. But yeah, I know what you mean, another full length R&C and not a four hour game like QFB was and Q-Force probably will be. I'm sure Insomniac will do more full length R&C games.
