Wii U Thread - Now in HD!

That Wii U CPU rumor is obviously bull and doesn't make any sense. The Wii CPU's clocked "a bit" higher than the Wii's? The Wii was clocked at 729 MHz, so a "bit" more would be I guess 1-1.2 GHz. That wouldn't make any sense, something like that would be too damn weak.

Besides, IBM already confirmed that the Wii U CPU is a Power 7 derivative, did they not?

What rumor?

Because it makes far more sense for the Wii U to have a CPU from IBM's high end server/supercomputer line...

So if we were to get ONE game announcement at the September conference, what would you like it to be? A trailer for the new 3D Mario? Nintendo finally revealing RETRO's new game? Or a shocking new reveal for the Wii U's first Zelda game? Or something else, maybe third party? Perhaps Nintendo reveal GTA V IS coming tot he Wii U...

Nintendo's new console, the Wii U, was finally unveiled to the world today at E3 2011, and we got a glimpse of its graphical prowess at the company's keynote. Details were scarce about the IBM silicon Nintendo's new HD powerhouse was packing, but we did some digging to get a little more info. IBM tells us that within the Wii U there's a 45nm custom chip with "a lot" of embedded DRAM. It's a silicon on insulator design and packs the same processor technology found in Watson, the supercomputer that bested a couple of meatbags on Jeopardy awhile back. Unfortunately, IBM wouldn't give us the chip's clock speeds, but if it's good enough to smoke Ken Jennings on national TV, we imagine it'll do alright against its competition from Sony and Microsoft.

I have to say despite using my PS3 for movies I'm definetly intrigued by operating an app like Netflix and Nintendo's whole using the GamePad to work your TV idea. I could totally see me using the Wii U a lot just because of something like picking up the GamePad and being able to operate the TV.

It doesn't seem like a big thing, but Nintendo has said how they want people to just grab the GamePad when they walk into a room and have that get them into playing and I could see it working, on me at least. There is definetly times where I'm choosing whether I want too relax by watching television or start playing a game, well if I have the GamePad in my hand I could totally see me just switching my TV input with the GamePad and booting up a game, or just start playing on the GamePad while the TV's going.

I agree.
My main problem is that Netflix and other apps like that are not available in my country. But I'll probably operate the tv with the gamepad anyway. And I can imagine to pick the gamepad up often also for other uses (surf the web, and then switch to the Miiverse to look possible updates from friends and tips about games I'm playing, and then launch some DD games, surfing the eshop, or even launch a retail game directly from the dash on the gamepad and start playing it on it, while my wife look some show on the tv and so on)

Obviously I don't expect anything big like that, but if it happened I would go with Retro's game. I buy Nintendo consoles more for Mario and Zelda than Retro, but I also kind of know what to expect there. When it comes down to it I'm really curious to know what the hell Retro's working on.

Well, IBM as stated already confirmed the "nature" (not the details). They re-confirmed it also yesterday on Twitter:

#WiiU uses same #power7 chips.

If I'd have to choose following just my personal taste, I'd like to see what Monolith is doing on the Wii U. Speaking about NoA event, it would obsviously be somethin else, and I'd choose Retro's new game

Retro's new game. We were expecting it at E3, but the announcement didn't come.

I want it to be like Metroid 3. It showed the way to do a shooter on the Wii. I want the new game to show how shooters have to be in the new controller.

That tweet is from 2011 mate, not yesterday. It's still an official quote from IBM though.

No, it won't. DVD are played sequently with no random seeks and at a very slow drive speed. Games break drives, DVD don't
Yes it would. Because Nintendo uses CAV drives. DVDs are CLV. When you play a DVD on a CAV drive, the motor constantly spins up and brakes, wearing it down quickly.

And in doing so they linked to the same IBM press release from a year ago.

Both lherre and Arkam have corroborated the leaked specs and by corollary *tricore PowerPC based CPU. Even the somewhat overly enthusiastic ideaman.

So did it go from being POWER7 for engadget to *tricore PowerPC in devkits and back to POWER7 again?

*edit

Now that was tweeted 10 hours ago!!!!! Watching this thread maybe? EDIT, someone tweeted them... well done.

But do you trust them with your life?

Also says this on the official press release:

Built on the open, scalable Power Architecture base, IBM custom processors exploit the performance and power advantages of proven silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology. The inherent advantages of the technology make it a superior choice for performance-driven applications that demand exceptional, power-efficient processing capability – from entertainment consoles to supercomputers.

I dont think anyone thought it would be an actual power7, as that's a server CPU for supercomputers.

Why on earth would you want dvd playback. You can watch dvds with your alarm clock or fridge nowadays

happy0039.gif

Although, it would be nice if Bluray playback were enabled. If I'm not mistaken, the Wii can play DVDs with Homebrew, so I wonder if the same might be true with the Wii U and Bluray.

Anything?

A new HD F-Zero with 16 player online and a bevy of options for custom lobbies. Metroid, Mario(3D) and Zelda are practically guaranteed. I want the futuristic racer to come back.

I've just seen your question and linked the Tweets I've read about yesterday (probably I've put the wrong link ;p )

I don't think there are any hardware reasons why it can't; just licensing. It'll be playing blurays through homebrew within a day most likely :D

POWER is just a specific product line of the PowerPC family, POWER7 is a PowerPC. The architecture is simply called "Power" - without the caps or the "PC" part.

I hope they don't fuck up the Wii U version of Black Ops.

Treyarch don't let me down.

I just hope they add in the ability to stream one of the player's POV to the Gamepad in local multiplayer. I'd be totally fine with relaxing back in a chair or on the couch when playing with some friends.

People seem to be claiming so in this thread.

I agree with your assessment, it has some of the same tech that IBM use in the Watson, for example eDRAM is Watson tech for PR purposes.

I have no idea what's going on with that Twitter account talking about the same Watson POWER7 chips being used...

PowerPC = POWER(7) = PowerPC...

...newer chips in the POWER series implement the full PowerPC instruction set

Wii U > HDMI > Surround Receiver > HDMI > Projector. Come on, get with the times!!

bluray
cable box
mac mini HTPC
PS3
360

already taking up all slots on my receiver. If one box gets chosen as getting downgraded then it'll be WiiU, so I'd like an optical out, otherwise its getting stereo only.

Yes it's highly ambiguous. 'Chip' could be referring numerous things so it doesn't really help the discussion - just confuses the matter as people assume it means it's the same cpu.

They towed the "WiiU uses Watson" line for a while, but was just PR to get people talking. Watson is bigger than my lounge, and just one Power7 chip (which, incidentally has a minimum of 4 cores at 2.4ghz plus 4-way SMT, natively) would likely be too hot for the Wii u and doesn't fit in with any of the info we've heard so far from devs/sources etc.

BOOM! Excite.

Quite disappointed that Oxford Street Game store has closed because I was looking forward to standing in line. I'm guessing the UK launch event will now be at HMV Leicester Square so I'm gonna' keep an eye on their pre-order situation. Already got an order down with ShopTo.

I too want a new F-ZERO - it'd be fucking awesome - but 32 player online or bust.

I reckon this is Retro's game ya know.....

We've been told it looks stunning, but isn't a franchise everyone was expecting/wanting. F-Zero could be both of those things (so could other games, but then that would ruin my whole "its F-Zero" theory)

Jordan Mechner's martial arts classic is coming to Nintendo's new console

You may have heard of Jordan Mechner. He's the man behind a little game called Prince of Persia, one of the most successful and enduring video game franchises of all time. He also created a title called Karateka in 1984, an action game which involves plenty of martial arts action.

Karateka is getting something of a facelift for modern systems, with versions confirmed for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and iOS. Thanks to an ESRB rating, we now know that the game is also destined to appear on the Wii U.

A downloadable release is looking most likely, as the game will only available in this manner on other formats.

Is it true retro game was pulled away from e3 conference?
If so nintendo won't wait till next e3 to show it and then a good candidate for the september 13th event.

Move the 360 to optical and have the Wii U take the HDMI for surround-sound on both, problem solved? Because THIS is what you say you would do, but the other way around isn't it?

Apparently pulled at the last minute cos it wasn't ready. Good candidate for Sept conference. But knowing Nintendo it's entirely possible they hold off maybe so they don't detract from other launch titles. Sounds dumb I know, but console launches are strange times.

I'm not playing with my TV speakers lol. There's gotta be a way.

Does your TV have an optical audio out?

My old receiver didn't have HDMI, so I ran all HDMI stuff into the back of the TV, then audio out from the TV to the receiver via optical cable. Worked fine, I just had to turn the TV speaker volume off.

My new receiver has HDMI ports, so now everything goes there first - and it's definitely easier to do the switching at the receiver.

Your PS3 should be Optical, dude.

Edit: No it shouldn't, sorry. I'm talking bollocks!

Hm, I dunno. RETRO making a racing game? At first I thought the same as you - it seemed to fit, what with their experience in futuristic 3d environments. But if you looks at RETRO's hirings and comments form others, it doesn't piece together so well.

Top this off with Iwata saying they hadn't really considered an F-ZERO for Wii U, and I don't think it's too likely any more.

Wii U > HDMI > Surround Receiver > HDMI > Projector. Come on, get with the times!!

Most televisions don't output a multi-channel signal except when using the TV tuner itself. Meaning, my PS3 needs to be jacked directly into my receiver to get 5.1. If I jack HDMI into my GT30, then use the optical out - I will only get stereo from my PS3.

Can't wait for Ninty to show off more 1st party work. Will definitely jump on board for that stuff. :)

I wonder if, given the now capable hardware, the next Zelda will play it more straight with the art style like TP, or if they'll do something interesting like WW or SS. Kinda hoping for a WW-like style with the more unrestrained engine. Would be incredible!

I was torturing myself today again, looking at Wacoms Cintiq line... I swear I'm going to own one of these in a year or so, and will buy a table that can support their 20+ kilo weight. But paying 1700€ and up is really not in the cards for me right now.

If Nintendo is playing their cards right, the WiiU Tablet could become an amazing entry level graphic tablet. Tablets are simply too expensive, and lack the necessary buttons to be used effectively as a graphic tablet. A Colors 3D/2D version would be a killer App for me. Fully customizable buttons and Analog sticks (size, hue, saturation, pressure, form on the analog sticks). Switching between tools, brush forms, undo/redo, drag, buckets...
Also some much needed support for various data formats, (png, tiff, jpg, mpo) and seemless online integration (upload, galleries, comments etc)

The functions are there, hopefully someone takes it up.
