NPD August 2012 Sales Results [Up3: Sleeping Dogs]

you were, apparently, referring to the three as a whole. i thought you were originally referring to the most recent one. it's hard to tell that you're switching what you're talking about from paragraph to paragraph if you refer to one thing and then actually mean three things.

Actually it's not. I was talking about consumers response, combined with how I feel the quality is, you responded pointing out my comment on quality, I responded in kind about the subject of quality, then you redirected to a complete earlier comment you hadn't quoted and responded to.

To make it clear: I think the whole series is a B team effort, that still is Mario so still has the basic platformer credentials of the Mario series - just not near as good as SMB 3 or SMW and they need to get back to that. It's turned into a series with a focus on multiplayer, waggle, dual screen, coin collecting, or all of the above depending on which iteration it is.

IMO the level design revolves around making wide open spaces to accommodate for multiplayer, blind wall passages and coin collecting to artificially add "challenge/replay value", and the whole game just comes off as a Mario obstacle course than anything else with only a handful of levels having the genius and variety that the series was known for.

Frankly, I think people have caught on through a lot of critical tedid response and over-saturation, which is why the new ones this year probably aren't going to be the system sellers they expect them to be.

Mario will be Mario and sell it's million(s) - but I don't think consumers have the same feeling to go out and buy a system now for it.

Please help me with my bad english
kingdom hearts did pretty well.

nsmb2 didn't do too badly, but the 3ds xl definitely bombed. i think nintendo will do okay with sales constantly between 200k and 250k, but all this sub-200k stuff is awful for them. nsmb2 should be $34.99, the 3ds should be $99.99, and the 3ds xl should be $129.99.
I agree. The 3DS is priced too high as it is.

isn't 40k (or 50k? not sure) for Vita like... DISASTROUS??

why is everyone posting casually like it's o.k or expected? maybe I am missing something.

Yeah, you're missing the many (justified right now) doom and gloom posts.

Not sure why BLOPS is still selling.

It's nowhere near as good ad MW3. Neither of them are great games though to be honest.

All right i was willing to give vita the benefit of the doubt till christmas but sub 40k is cancellation numbers. Its over and they should cut their losses

Going to ask this again,

Anyone have original DS hardware LTD when original NSMB launched in May 2006? Would be interesting to compare to current 3DS LTD hardware numbers.

Well, after it sold around 48K last month, it's not like it's any surprise.
So, while that doesn't make it "OK," there's no real reason for any shock or anything, it basically could have been expected after last month and the way things have been going.

At the end of April 2006: 4.45 million. At the end of May 2006: 4.6 million. June 2006 ... well, that was a special month.

You can tell me if 145k for PS3 and 65K for Wii is a good estimative?
That seems like the best estimate we're going to get.
3DS and 360's sales aren't "bad."

I have a feeling 2 years from now we'll look back at months like this and realize this is the new normal.
Are they "good"?

I don't think it's the new "normal" for home consoles - it's generational fatigue. The handhelds don't have that excuse.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
That seems like the best estimate we're going to get.

For this new market where iOS is eating away a large chunk? I'd argue they're decent at minimum.

well whatever the case, i'm sorry for the confusion.

To make it clear: I think the whole series is a B team effort, that still is Mario so still has the basic platformer credentials of the Mario series - just not near as good as SMB 3 or SMW and they need to get back to that. It's turned into a series with a focus on multiplayer, waggle, dual screen, coin collecting, or all of the above depending on which iteration it is.

if there's any failing in the level design, it's because nintendo was trying to accommodate new gamers. or namely, younger ones. there's an iwata asks about the development of super mario galaxy where the composer had been told by koji kondo that his music was too much suited for kids, and that mario is 'cool.' there's another where miyamoto had the developers make the level design more difficult in nsmbw because he felt they had made it too easy.

hell, the reason why smg and 3d land are so easy is due to nintendo accommodating newer players, since they have a harder time grasping the very concept of 3d games.

to be fair, you are right about it being made by the b-team. these were the guys who did the super mario advance ports, apparently, and probably worked on the e-reader levels for smb3 on the gba. they weren't very experienced when it came to nsmb, but they sure as hell didn't focus on dual screen. dual screen was very much an afterthought in both recent 2d marios.

by the time they got to nsmbw, they had definitely grown. with some better direction, and more space to put stuff on the screen, they created much better levels than before. and the super play feature allowed them to make more challenging levels without worrying about newcomers.

IMO the level design revolves around making wide open spaces to accommodate for multiplayer, blind wall passages and coin collecting to artificially add "challenge/replay value", and the whole game just comes off as a Mario obstacle course than anything else with only a handful of levels having the genius and variety that the series was known for.

i assume you're talking about nsmb2 specifically here, but the mario obstacle course is what i like about it. i think there's some good level design and good platforming, with nice secrets that lead to good rewards. and when was the last time a mario hub world was actually interesting, where you actually felt rewarded for finding secrets? like 16 years ago? i thought it was great that it wasn't enough to just find the secret cannon to skip a world- you had to earn it with a final test of platforming skills. it certainly beats the straight lines of 3d land and galaxy 2, or the doctor-recommend to ambien known as super mario galaxy's hub world.

Frankly, I think people have caught on through a lot of critical tedid response and over-saturation, which is why the new ones this year probably aren't going to be the system sellers they expect them to be.

Mario will be Mario and sell it's million(s) - but I don't think consumers have the same feeling to go out and buy a system now for it.

i think it's way too early to say that. the first nsmb, the one that's sold about 9 million units in the united states, sold 275k in its first month back in may 2006. and if there's any issue with the way the game is selling, i would sooner blame it on another, lesser, mario game being made available for the system less than a year ago.

Man, I really can't see a next generation of handhelds (either by Sony or Nintendo) being able to compete in this growing market of smart phones and tablets, particularly here in the west. And I don't see Japan's market alone making it worth the investment to continue in the handheld business. Count me in the doom and gloom group for dedicated portable gaming devices.

Also i think people are kidding themselves pretending like any new console will turn things around dramatically. I think people are going to ha e to accept a large amount of the console base were more casual users who are being drawn away by other devices

i see dedicated handhelds sticking around, but they need to be more like the game boy: low on power, low on price, and high in battery life.

a $99.99 handheld system with $20-$30 games would do really well. especially if there was some brand power behind them. they would just need to have a hook so they wouldn't be easily replicated on more powerful machines.

I think Nintendo will try again and bring back the Gameboy but this will be Sony's last handheld.

Exactly the days of a handheld selling at such high prices is over. A 99 nintendo handheld i believe would do very well. If tablets like the kindle can be sold for so cheap 99 could get you far in a few years

Man, Nintendo really needs to kill the DS. In Japan it's dead and buried, and no doubt the 3DS benefits because of it.

Black and White 2 won't help either. Still can't believe they didn't make it 3DS exclusive.

Sales are pretty average to slightly below average. Last Gen was very unique and has greatly warped perceptions of sales

After june 2006 the DS sales skyrocketed. I don't expect the 3DS to ever line up with the 3DS after that date.

True. DS in particular was such a success because of large groups of casual gamers with titles like Brain Age, Mario and Nintendogs. We know that for sure most of these people are on their cell phones now.

Sony should get out, there's nothing but red bottom lines for them in the handheld market. Nintendo, however, I think can survive on the strength of its franchises and smart business planning (i.e. prepare now for the realities of a smaller market).

Terrible month yet again. 3DS has a terrible sales even though the XL, NSMB2, and KH release.

It's a looker as well, which should help.

I think Halo 4 will benefit from so many titles moving to 2013 too - fewer games to divide people's attention, so more 360 gamers will turn to Halo.

Halo 4 will sell less than Reach in the first month. COD black ops 2 is releasing a week later + Ass Creed 3 etc... Halo Reach released in September. Halo 4 is releasing in November. Huge difference.

In August 2014 three "fresh" new home console platforms will be available. If the best selling one can't even manage 200K then the industry seems pretty fucked.

August home console HW total:
2002 = 710K
2003 = 540K
2004 = 538K
2005 = 440K
2006 = 516K
2007 = 1014K
2008 = 977K
2009 = 808K
2010 = 827K (+PS2)
2011 = 716K (+PS2)
2012 = 403K

Nintendo doesn't have the problem. They are still making bank with the 3DS. Worldwide, the 3DS may not be hot, but it's still doing good and making a profit. Handheld sales(especially in NA) have changed. People need to change their expectations. Mobile gaming is here and has changed the game.

If the 3DS does not live up to Nintendo´s expectations it means it´s failing from Nintendo´s perspective to reaching their targeted sales. There´s no way about that.

ouch, Kingdom Hearts won't ever return to the former sales, it's amazing how they missed a whole console generation, even if they make a KH3 next year (not happening,lol) I'm not sure if people would return after 6-7 years, interests change. The IP will probably just die. It's amazing how they managed all of this. ha

It seems like just yesterday the proper protocol was to skip all things TreyArch in favor of Infinity Ward's work. Yes I know what has transpired since then but still its funny to think back with the way things are now.

It's really pretty amazing how poorly managed it is, but I think they can probably bring it back with a new flashy console game. It is a Disney game after all, it just has to appear on a console people in NA actually seem to care more about.

Dreadful numbers overall though. The industry is needing new consoles bad.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Average to disappointing numbers all around. 3DS is disappointing considering all it had going for it last month, if that's how it did with all that how will it do this month?

And Vita? Those results are just terrible.

Dat Vita numbers....

It's going to be a sad October NPD. I hope Sony doesn't waste too much more money on it now, I want my awesome PS4. Vita isn't going to sell regardless, Sony needs to smarten up and just drop support slowly.
