Dead Leaves did it right, as expected.

I saw Dead Leaves today, definitely liked it the least of the three(Hells and Redline). Someone earlier described it as juvenile and I somewhat agree with that assessment.

Eh, I liked them. I thought the way they were explained and the interviews with them were really cool and sometimes funny like
"GORI RIDER YOU MOTHER FUCKER"
. It felt really fitting with the whole "crazy underground race" thing they were going for. It was like a monster truck commercial or something with the participants.

Exactly. It felt like something out of Wacky Races. I loved that bit so much.

... and that should do it for cosmic's OT. Anymore than that and I'd actually start spoilering stuff!
At the rate you guys are going with inline gifs for Hells, you're going to give away the whole film before most of us have a chance to watch it!
But this is only from the first few action packed minutes of this two hour action packed movie!

Is that a nipple spike, or is it just really cold out?
Watch it and find out!

The Light of El Cantare
The explosions did look cool though.

Yeah, at least Redline never stops looking good. Unfortunately, if your entire film is about racing, you only have two major races in the entire film, and you've already run out of ways to depict racing interestingly shortly into the second race and feel forced to distract the viewer with something else for the rest of the film to compensate, that's a problem.

I really do like the looks of Hells but I confess I am worried it'll end up similar to my experience with Redline, especially with its long running time.

I thought it fit relatively well. It's like a level hazard in Mario Kart.

If a level hazard in Mario Kart stopped the race for 10 minutes, it'd be pretty aggravating.

I don't actually think Redline ever runs out of interesting ways to depict anything. The film is visually creative throughout it's entire run. However, just being visually creative or unique is not the same thing as being an interesting movie that engages your audience on any level. It's the same in any film - action that you don't care about is just boring visual noise.

The plot at least feels more "complete" than Redline, but knowing your tastes, I can't see you being as enthusiastic about it as some other people here. I'm thinking it will fall somewhere within the above average-good range for you.

Man, I don't even remember what the hell Redline's plot was about. Like, wtf is a Funky Boy?

All I remember are the utterly amazing visuals and animation.

Once again we see how far KyoAni is ahead of everyone else. The particle effects in this scene were phenomenal. Not only did the depth-of-field effect create the illusion that they permeate the scene, rather than just being pasted over it, but each particle felt hand-crafted and hand-placed, as opposed to seeing the same particles following the same path in a copy-and-pasted manner.

This episode proves once again that being Mayaka is suffering.
Satoshi really takes "fear of commitment" to a new level.

I didn't mean to imply that I personally believed that Redline had run out of interesting ways to depict the actual race; rather that I interpreted the presence of Funky Boy as a sign that those involved with the production felt that simply more racing wasn't enough to carry that portion of the film.

I think that a more elegant way to add complications to the race would have been simply to increase the frequency and variety of combat between racers. More foul play, more weapons, and all of it an officially legitimized aspect of the race. No need for an external villain to swoop in and disrupt the flow of events.

Or, you know, just have a race. I hear racing is supposed to be exciting... all those Nascar and F1 people can't be wrong. lol
It worked for Cars anyway. :p

The one thing that always stuck out for me with Redline's plot was the fact that
the mob dude forcing JP's friend Frisbee to fix the races looked just like the very person JP idolised in that dream/flashback sequence. Down to the exact same haircut.

This completely blew my mind into a trillion little bits and pieces when someone pointed this out to me for the first time.

I refuse to believe.

Excellent! I'll get right on that. Thanks a lot.
No worries dude!

Redline wouldn't have been able to pull off (Cars spoilers)
the "he didn't win after all" twist
though. I'm not terribly fond of Cars overall, but I certainly appreciated what it did there.

That's too hard, we need more blue shells.
Blue shells are the best shells.

(Anyone still play MK7?)

Well... I mean,
he still "won"
after all. At the very least, the race was part of the emotional climax, rather than some mess of randomness that existed for the sake of having shit happen.

Yea I definitely didn't like this as much as Summer Wars. At certain points I wasn't even sure if I liked it in general. The main problem I had with it is the stupidity of the main lead or rather the frivolousness of her. She doesn't do jackshit with her abilities except extremely minor and petty things. Yes it's repeatedly pointed out in the movie how idiotic she is but just because you point something out doesn't get you off the hook.
The fact that she wasted(what she thought anyway) her last jump when Chiaki asked her about the time travel just to avoid the question, I was yelling at the screen how idiotic she was.
Also the major butterfly effect seemed really forced for dramatic purposes rather than something natural. Then we have the Aunt who seemingly is cool with everything despite what Makoto is saying should be insane. I later found out that this is the sequel to a live-adaptation but I was wondering what was going on with the Aunt during the entire duration of the movie. The repetition of the line "Time Waits for No One" really kinda heavy-handed with not only the visual representations but also the repeated audio ones as well. I finally had a couple of issues with the ending.
The first is that Makoto says to Chiaki at the end that she would wait for him despite her aunt essentially saying not to. Using her aunt's analogy, it's like running out to meet the guy and say a quick hello before running back in and waiting for him to come in. It's like a quick flip flop. I would have preferred her to be more progressive all the way to the finish line. She helps him and then regresses back into her Aunt. The second one is that they do a time-jump and the bit seems like an unnecessary epilogue that really doesn't add anything. I mean if they were going to do a timejump I was expecting something a bit meatier instead of a quick, check-up on everyone.

I did like some of the visual angles even if the animation didn't blow me away.
Jarmel, Jarmel, Jarmel.

Jinrui kind of reminds me of bizarroworld Kinos Journey with the ways it explores humanity and society, except using sentient hair, fairies and evil chickens.

Jinrui is one of my favourite anime in years! I find that it's more about consumerism than anything else. People eating for leisure rather than survivability (fairies and sugar), BL manga as a testament for what's pop culture becoming, social/casual sex and gender roles, the obsession with cute, etc. The best thing is the fact that it is set in a time where humanity has simply resigned but in a non-chaotic or totalitarian way. That alone creates a dynamic that sets the series apart from all other dystopian and post-apocalyptic works.

I don't understand the comments about it being average except for the first two eps and 9. It's got the best writing and one of the best character anime's ever had, period. And it's so rare to see a smart woman, or any smart character, in anime. Jinrui also understands that the only way to deal with time travel is to deal with it conceptually and not technically, or else you'll end up with shit. Loved the satire in that arc. Also the line about time being the only ressource distributed among humans equally or something like that is just so awesome. It's also got a very interesting art direction.

I find it's one of these series I can recommend to anyone, not just anime fans.

Isn't that the entire point of the movie? plus I always thought it was kind of realistic in a sense, in that most female teenagers would probably do silly things, if they were given a time jump ability similar to makoto in the film.

Boy is it weird to see people still watching this.

Space Bros. 23
I really wasn't super into this episode. Fairly aimless outside of the loose ends it was working to tie up, and lots of scenes just felt really plain and predictable without having the snap to them I like from a written standpoint. The scenes where Mutta is Santa? That stuff should be gold, but instead I was just groaning the whole way through.

Also, I don't like throwing this accusation around very often but this was giving off the sexist vibe. There was a really weird cut straight from Serika into the baby girl crying, and I'm getting pretty sick of the whole fat lady stuffing her face thing every single time she shows up. There is a very singular and charged view of women that has taken over this series.
