Jetpack Joyride got updated, I'm curious if the game will feel somewhat easier on the screen of the iPhone 5.

Vay's menu is really weird...
It's such a shoddy job it's funny, I haven't played it yet but I lol'd when I saw Vamphuntr's post about it in the Lunar thread:

Wow that Vay iOS version is gross presentation wise. The opening video is actually running through the quicktime player of the device .... The control panel from the youtube app pops up when you touch the screen. Moreover the menus from the game are the plain iOS menus :S

We just submitted a Twang the Fox update which has support for the new iPhone 5/5th gen Touch resolution. No telling on when it will get approved, but hopefully shows up in just over a week.

No comments just yet on if and when all our other titles will get similar treatment.

I use the virtual joystick and buttons and have found it to work extremely well. Auto-aim is a nice feature to have.

I've completed the game on the PC already, just asking because if it does control more or less like the Zeldas in DS did, I'd happily pay the price of admission to see how it worked out.

You wouldn't like it.

I'm not above giving things a chance, you know? I'm asking sincerely here, if the touch controls (not the virtual button stuff) is well implemented or not. I'm all for touch control if it's done right (like the DS Zeldas were, or like many other iOS titles are).

It is very well done. Point and click works much better than virtual d-pad.

IMO the touch controls are really quite boring, since you're just tapping to move and block and the kid is autoattacking. I can't stand autoattacking, I always feel like it doesn't prioritise the enemies properly and I die more. Plus, I find that my arms get in the way of the screen when i'm moving all over to tap.

The virtual stick and buttons are great however (although the buttons could use being maybe an inch higher) .

And we've already had two pages of discussion about how not good the game is.

Really? Curious as to what makes it "not good".
Its free, Ive spent 0 real money, it looks pretty flash, hunting monsters is fun (although can get annoyingly hard) and cant seem to exhaust the things to do.

Then again It does not surprise me as everyone in here loves an endless runner and they bore me to tears.
I can't take any recommendation with referral codes seriously, because you have an ulterior motive in "recommending" the game.

Well both parties end up with the same stuff and its how my brother got me into playing it, otherwise id have never heard of it.

Edit: sO i went back and there is maybe 7 replys out of 300 that mention it, over half are referal codes and the rest are like "lol automation, rubbish" not quite what I expected. Oh well to each there own and all that.

As someone who tries to read through this thread a couple times a week to keep track of stuff I might want to check out, I would also greatly appreciate a new, potentially monthly "Best of iOS" thread. I've tried using Touch Arcade and Slide to Play to keep track of interesting games but for my tastes they advocate way too many subpar, uninteresting games to be useful. On the other hand this thread has rarely disappointed when I've bought games that are well-liked.

Can't wait to get Rayman this weekend, I've been busy with school and have held off so as not to be distracted. Origins is my favorite game in a long time and you're holding right a majority of the time already (on non-exploratory runs, anyway) so presumably Jungle Run is pretty similar.

Best of iOS thread: I'm not too busy tomorrow afternoon so I might get the ball rolling.

What you iOSGAF like the parameters to be? Only games released in the last year? All time again (this might be more interesting since we'll be able to compare it to last time)?

I think breaking it down by genre is simply too much work, especially since genres can be so wooly (and some are incredibly competitive).

So, give me your ideas people, lets see what we can do.

All time, no doubt.

I think instead of listing 'good games' though, of which there are millions, maybe focus on games that people have pumped heaps of time (maybe at least 10 hours?) into?
That might help distill the huge list down to some focus maybe?

Would it be asking too much to ask for an iPhone section, iPad section, and notes for what games support both, and also what games have iCloud saves?

To be honest, there are way too many games for a "best of iOS" thread. I could probably recommend 250 myself, and that's before anyone else recommends their 250.

And there's no way to cut it down, because all those games will be genuinely worth picking up. That'll just make the thread pointless because asking people to scroll through a list of 400/500+ excellent iOS games is asking too much.

This is tricky since GAFfers pingpong from one game to another barely spending 5 mins on each :p but really, I think the 'best' should be down to each person - for some people the best games might well be the ones they've spent longest on but I don't think it's across the board, people have all kinds of criteria.

Fuck yes that is asking a lot. If you want to do it then by all means be my guest. I can barely keep straight what games are for which device, and I never use cloud saving personally. It's just not something I want to do, sorry. But if you feel strongly about it, you are quite welcome to make the thread, I really don't mind. I just bought this up today since people have been asking.

Each game will have a link to the store for it, people can work out the devices from there.

EDIT: to do this efficiently, you'd really need to break it down at the voting stage, and I think that puts too much onus on the voters, most of whom will already be pissy if last time is anything to go by :p

IMO, think of it as 'your favourite' games rather than trying to find the objective best games. EDIT: I don't think I could even name 250 games, and they're certainly not my favourites. I probably have 10-20 favourite games.

To make the list a little less unweildy we could maybe limit to ten votes per person rather than 20? That would limit the amount of 1 vote outliers. But at the same time, it could mean the list only consists of the super popular games (Angry Birds sweeps the board!)

If PSN can have a weekly release thread (lol) I dont see why iOS cant have a recap thread every week or month..

You can definitely do this.

While the megathread will likely never go away due to the sheer volume of iOS games, the goal is to move more and more away from this as iOS develops more and more as a platform.

Making weekly release threads and/or monthly recommendation threads would be perfectly fine and even ideal.

Whelp, was hoping to wait for an update (to fix the save issues) before getting the new Rayman, but I think I need something to take my mind off of how damn frustrating Lunar has been so far. Besides, this new Rayman needs support -- these are the kinds of games I want to see Ubi publishing on this platform.

I think an all-time list would be more interesting. A lot of good early games have dated poorly or fallen out of favor, so it'll be interesting to see how suggestions shape up now.

I've played through so many damned games int past 5 months I can't even process what would be my top 10. I can tell you what the top games in each genre are, but I couldn't tell you why Ski Safari is better than Swordigo if I was forced to.

Whats the good, graphically impressive games that are optimized for the new 5 display? I've found:

- Wild Blood
- Asphalt 7: Heat
- Amazing Spider-Man (?)
- Horn

Anything else?

Definitely of all time. As others have mentioned, I like being able to compare from year to year, and seeing which games are remembered/forgotten
Personally I think it'd be best to start with an all time thread for this month and then move on to a weekly or monthly thread. It's nice being able to just discuss new games and to get recommendations for current games.

Impressions of Lunar:

This is my first time with this game -- coming in fresh. It's beautiful, even today, the presentation is mammoth, and in many ways the gameplay reminds me of Chrono Trigger. Absolutely adore it already as an RPG.

But...

These controls. Argh... Lots of issues with the touch controls and collision, and if you turn the game portrait to utilize the virtual GBA-esque pad, everything is teeny tiny. It also lags really bad if you put your device into sleep mode and then come back to the game. If they can polish up some of these issues, this could easily be one of, if not the, best JRPGs on iOS.

Still, I hope you will enjoy this. To me this is one of the best traditional JRPGs ever made.
What I remember the most is how the game's difficulty is balanced (at least WAS balanced in previous versions). I always felt it was perfect. Each new place you reach is having strong enough mobs and the game makes you use all your stuff (items, magic, etc). It's not like all Final Fantasy where you pile up tons of crap and never use it. I loved this Lunar game. So good!

Agreed about that. The controls are clumsy. The virtual pad in Landscape mode isn't very good, and the "touch where you want to go" mode is horrible, since there's no pathfinding. I'm playing FF Dimensions at the same time and it's night and day. I understand FFD was designed for touch devices, but still...

That doesn't stop me from enjoying the game though. I've always wanted to finish this one but never had the chance, and this port seems good enough to do the job. And yeah, the difficulty seems spot on so far.

A game shouldn't be considered for the list unless someone writes at least 2-3 paragraphs explaining why it's a good game and better than its peers. At the least that should cut down on people rattling off lists of games that clearly indicate that they actually haven't played competing products.

Also, ports should be in a separate category (or not at all), regardless of genre. It's so depressing seeing people rattle off 10-20 year old games shoehorned into iOS just because modern entries are mediocre at best (I'm looking at you, adventure games).

Sweet! Supernova expansion for Galaxy On Fire 2 was just released!

Does it revamp the game or is it just more of the same, because what I played of GOF2 was a boring "baby's first Elite" that only underscored how far the genre has fallen.

Yeah, that's the most frustrating part about dealing with the game's issues, is that it's completely evident early on how great the game itself otherwise is.

I was saying that same thing until I played some more last night and the framerate died on me. Gonna try and restart my phone and see if it helps, but I was getting a frame once per 30 seconds or so until I said "fuck it."

Start off the first thread with all time, then every month have it only games released in the past month.

I would do it, but the haters are just too much. GAF loves to come into threads and shit on anything different.

Also, don't do genre. Maybe have like a vote and separate them by stars given in said vote? Example:

VOTE:
Rayman Jungle Run - 1-5 stars (select one)

Total:
1 star votes - 3
2 star votes - 0
3 star votes - 4
4 star votes - 2
5 star votes - 6

THREAD:

5 Stars:
Rayman Jungle Run
Lili

Or something similar to that. I dunno, just throwing out ideas here.

Gonna jump back to the iPhone with the iPhone 5 since the 4.

What are some good recommendations? Side-scrollers turn, turn based, tower defense and point based (temple run, fruit ninja, etc) primarily.

Might pick up

The World Ends With You
Hero Academy
Horn
Super Hexagon
Run Roo Run

:)

Just had a new iPad revelation guys.

Eliss suffers from the same illness as Osmos, in that it's a game I bought way back when and discovered it's barely playable on the iPhone but I've just found out it becomes a god damn masterpiece on the iPad. It doesn't have an iPad version, as the game is iPhone only, but it truly does become something else entirely when played on the Pad in stretched format. Trust me guys, it's amazing.

I would replace Hero Academy with Summoner Wars...

So I downloaded The Simpsons Tapped Out, and I'm having fun with it. However I'm looking at some of the requirements to advance and it seems many things require a ton of donuts. Am I wasting my time playing this game before I get stuck by a giant pay wall?

I've reached a 5-star rank in Dungeon Village, are there other goals for me now or did I 'beat' the game?

There really isn't much to do after you "finish" the game. Game is fun, but there doesn't seem to be any major reason to replay it or continue.

That was my experience with it when I downloaded it from the Canadian App Store a while back. I got a bit into it, and then it slowed down significantly. That being said, I wouldn't call it a pay wall, though. It plays just like every other Cityville clone, and to me, it's a matter of spending a small amount of time with the game each day and watching it slowly evolve. To that end, it seems fine to me. These games were never meant to zip through. They're like pet rocks.
