Gamestop Announces today Wii U Wait-Program "Demand off the charts"

So basically Wii U preorders are doing well. Not surprising. The home console market has been begging for new hardware.

Wii U looks like it is off to a great start. People seem to be genuinely excited for it. Maybe it is just the fact that it is the successor to the Wii or maybe it is the game pad, don't know.

For me it's the game pad and it looks like Nintendo is going to make a halfass attempt to appeal to what I like this time. I hated the Wii.

I went in today and got put on the list. They told me I might as well put myself down for a Deluxe, but I can always get a Basic if it is available first. They said I had about a 50/50 chance of getting one before Xmas, but they really will not know more until closer to launch. Hope I can score one, as I am ready to buy.

So Gaf do you think we will see deluxe packs available again for preorder or on launch day ?
I must say that I hadn't imagined that the console would sold out so quickly. What, 2-3 days after the big conference and that's it, no more stocks ? That's insane.
And to top it all, being an euro guy the number of shops that sells internationaly is quite limited.

I work at Gamestop and I think we've gotten like 3 people to jump on this list over the past two days. There's no requirement to put money down and honestly, the demand for it just hasn't been there so far. Very small anecdote, but I can't help but buy into it since I already think the Wii U isn't going to do very well. Confirmation bias at it's best, I suppose.
So 20 per store.

I could've sworn I read in the past the 360 was in the range of 10-12 per GameStop. And the PS3 stopped at an average of 15.

But I have no first hand knowledge about that... I just recall those numbers from reading old posts on the internet from 2005 and 2006.

4,434 Gamestops in the US = minimum of just under 90K for the chain nationwide? I wonder what kind of allotment other retailers were promised as a minimum.
hmmm.....

So the rumor of GameStop getting 100K might be true.

Gamestop doesn't have a per-store limit on preorders. They take them for as long as they can nationally and then stop when they hit their national threshold. The point of preorders is to see how many each store needs. So putting a cap defeats that purpose.

I imagine it'll at least be enough of a fad item among children and parents to make demand tight, though I'm expecting it won't be as bad as the Wii itself was given that had LINES on the day pre-orders opened.

IIRC, it was announced in advance when they were going to take pre-orders for the Wii. For Wii U it basically happened after the price announcement, but there wasn't any confirmation that anyone would be taking pre-orders. I'm not saying it's going to be as big as the Wii, but something to atleast consider.

FWIW the Manager at my local Gamestop told me something similar. I'm not sure if he was referring to nationally or regionally, but it definitely wasn't "per store". Not that you can believe them always but he said they have a set amount and it didn't matter how many each store sold. For some reason it seems like he mentioned something about regional, though I can't remember now.

First new console in 6 years might do that. There is no doubt that the holidays will be a blood bath for the Wii U, they will sell every system they manage to put on shelves. Hopefully sales will continue to be good for 2013 though.

Im sure its based on store numbers. The 1000 top gamestop stores are sure to get at least 5 times whatever the bottom 1000 are.

I'm amused by this thread and the other thread where Gamestop anounces and says how fast the Wii U is being preordered but people try to dismiss it through various ways. Gamestop doesn't have special alliances or biases towards Nintendo. If it was Reggie, nintendo pr or a nintendo fansite that's one thing but its Gamestop they don't dabble into the console wars.

Wii-U demand "off the charts"

If your chart was incredibly short, achievable

You have proof of this?

Man it's amazing how much people (I don't necessarily mean you Medalion) want the Wii U to fail and fail badly.

I think all the systems are going to have great games, the problem is that the Wii U will have the Nintendo franchises that make it more difficult for Third Parties to flourish on their consoles.

The Wii U might actually have the chance be able to get more Third Party sales but still have the Nintendo brand names......is this why people want the thing to fail so badly?

Nintendo cut-off because of china protesting, probably hit foxconn as well, we don't get all the news transferred, would probably need to find local sources if they even reported about it in full detail. My national news channel didnt even report that tech facilies were on fire and production stopped in a few of them.

Of course.

I didn't say there was a set "per-store limit", I said "range" and "average".

Retail market revenue has been dropping YoY at an alarming rate since 2010.

And Wii U is the life boat for at least another year, so they'll wave at it as hard as they can to save them, even it is only a boat and not a cruiser

This is a pretty silly belief. If Nintendo franchises really hurt third party sales it wouldn't matter WHAT console they were on. People have a Wii and PS3 or 360 and buy both Nintendo games and 3rd party games. If Wii was HD and got multiplatform games people could just buy them on Wii. If the games are good/popular they'll sell.

Right around the time Nintendo stopped supporting the Wii :p

Well, yes, but we don't know if the smartphones/tablets haven't replaced Wii as the casuals' to go place for their entertainment fix

I personally guess Wii U can sell anywhere between 50m-150m [that is becoming a normal player like PS3/360, or totally dominate like PS2]; but it's really hard to predict what will happen, specially that what Nintendo does with the console, how they advertise it, and what applications and features become available for it, and of course pricing, will play a huge part

It's in GS's best interest to sell as many consoles as they can. For their sakes, they'd love another Wii launch scenario.

Doesn't mean that GS is fabricating the whole "demand off the charts" thing, but it's good PR for GS's sales if they keep announcing that an item is "hot" right now.

Marketing ploy from Gamestop

Im not falling for the hype again , I will just walk in to my nearest walmart and buy it. Just like the Wii

It is selling out everywhere, though. Don't underestimate the demand for a new console after all these years. Especially the HD successor to the Wii, which had insane sales. Not saying you will not find one on launch day, but I don't deny the demand one bit.

Ill just join the bandwagon! Demand has been so overwhelming that the system is a dud and only being bought by resellers! There's no way its sought after and I'm sure we can was into a store on nov 19th and grab a wii u from the huge pile each store will have, right guys!?!?

Edit: in reply to dealio, its been stated that you wont be able to buy into the program, alreast initially.

I'll just line up like I did for the Wii and have a fun time doing it. Hopefully it won't be too cold. I'm guessing retailers will have quite a few systems that aren't allocated to pre-orders.

Any NY Gaffers that didnt preorder and want a 8gb white one pm me. I ordered a deluxe from kmart but had preordered the basic at gamestop and paid off most of it by trading in a bunch of games. I'll let it go for the price it goes for when its out!
