Android, iOS, WP8 phone debate thread

Speaking of colors in a business environment, I recently saw someone on the bus, wearing a suit, using one of these:

I thought it looked pretty damn awesome.

That's not what I was asking ;-)

it's a nice little phone I'll give you that much

but how is it exactly different or puts anything above and beyond any existing phone(s) beyond just design ?

other then that I just think it feels shitty in my hand (lumia line) slippery plastic and rounded sides ? wtf? and I don't think anything can change that for me but w/e

If you guys remember back when I was an iPhone only guy, only reason I went over to Android (only a few months back) was because iOS was getting systematically less reliable for me with each release. Worse battery, more glitches, hitches, crashes and all sorts. Even Google maps (which is still far better than the new Apple Maps) was under-par. Horrible GPS positioning, poor UI that is over simplistic and lacks options, poor GMAIL , terrible web browsing (smoothness doesn't mean shit if you have stalled page loading, a tiny screen and absolutely awful use of screen real estate) etc etc.

It's ironic that the iPhone 5 dropped the ball even further in many respects. Sort of re-affirmed my decision of moving over in being the right one, that and the other day when I spent several hours comparing both phones.
I didn't even switch due to any personal issue with ios - my 4's button was busted (like everyone else I know) so I bought a new phone as I was home on holidays and didn't really have an option at the time. Was gonna wait for the 5 but to me it would be more or less a downgrade in every way, as well as being hugely expensive (~$900 for the iPhone compared to $484 for the xperia). Apple's stuff is great but the 5 is completely uninteresting to me for the price, and most of the new iOS 6 features I already had.

Funny you should mention the home button thing, I had to swap my phone 4 times because of that issue. Don't know what it is, sweaty thumbs or low click life, but older iPhone home buttons were terribly unreliable.

Yeah, I was wondering how you came to the conclusion that it feels bad in your hand.

As for what makes it great, well, everything? If you like WP, which I happen to do, almost every spec or feature is at the top of the smartphone scale at the moment. Maybe except for raw processing power, but that's something that has never been a problem on Windows Phone (Or iOS, for that matter.)

It's just a feature packed phone that does away with almost any gripe I ever had with the Lumia 800, as far as I can tell without trying it.

Edit: If you want it in list form, I think Damon Bennet made one on one of the first pages of this thread.

Edit 2: Here it is:

Yes, finally a "war" thread.

Lumia 920 makes it easy for me to stay loyal to windows phone. At this point 920 feels like what could be iphone 5s (minus the faster chipset)

Highest DPI
Fastest Screen Refresh
Only Screen that works with gloves,
Best Camera on any current smartphone for videos AND pictures
NFC
Wireless Charging
Best visibility in sunlight (according to nokia)
Best audio-recording

Then Windows Phone 8 itself:

Well over 100.000 apps in the store from the get go
Highly customizable with livetile size choice and loads of accent colors
"Lenses" for best camera customization
"True" Offline Maps and Navigation without caching the data before
Skydrive and Windows ID integration for instant access to everything from every - Windows 8 and Windows phone 8 device
And everything that made Windows Phone 7 great.

List wars is best wars. Bring it on

Dunno what else you could want. Of course, if you hate the design or WP in general, it won't be for you. But there's no question it's an exciting phone.

It was a design fault, they fixed it for the 4S I think. All my mates with a 4 had the issue.

A larger screen (on phones at least) and back button make Android browsing far superior, IMO.
When do we post navigation of the Appstore in iOS 6 and how laggy and hitchy it is right now even on the iPhone 5? Or do we all just pretend that barely noticeable hitches and lag never happens on iOS? This is a very hilarious sort of discussion for those of us who have used JB and iOS6 a great deal.
That new app is hilariously bad. I had to find a currency converter or something for my mum today - she handed me the phone with the app already open and I had no idea what it was at first.

that's the one thing i don't like about the international (now worldwide) Samsung phone designs... DAT PHYSICAL BUTTON

wish they had kept the US layout in the US GS3/GN2

Its gets a great deal worse lagwise if you are using iOS6 on an 4S also. At this point we have reached the splittingest of splitting hairs.

I didn't say it was a shitty experience, I said it was a inferior experience.. anyway here is your link, timestamp 4:28.

he said it was a "shitty browser experience". Sorry, I didn't want to put words in your mouth. :)

As a current WP7 owner: More support for european regions, a payment system that works without a credit card and more moneyhats for devs of popular apps. :)

What does Nokia have over HTC as far as software is concerned with WP8? Any exclusive apps, mapping services, music, etc that are Nokia exclusive?

Much better camera (at least in the 920), much better screens and boatloads of terrific, polished apps that HTC could only dream about. Plus NFC and wireless charge.

If HTC took those two WP8 phones they recently announced and put Android on it, it would be hard to resist. Those things are amazing looking.

High DPI (was highest, but I think the 8X has it beat now?)
Fastest Screen Refresh (60hz)
Screen that works with gloves
Best Camera (f/2.0, OIS)
NFC
Wireless Charging
Top-tier screen visibility
Gorilla glass 2
HAAC rich audio-recording
Nokia's great apps

Really not that easy to find reasons to like this phone, in addition to teh sex design/colors.

I just don't see the big deal, besides the camera maybe, from the existing lumia line

everyone in here is touting this to be the 2nd cumming....of Super Smart Phone Jesus Christ (no typo)

it'll be outdated in 2-3 months just like any other flag ship SP....

and the HTC has DAT FRONT CAMERA so for people who love video chatting their moms, HTC wins again.

The HTC WP8 devices look killer. I would absolutely choose the HTC over Nokia. It's a shame about the 920 AT&T exclusivity too

I can't help it if you have eyesight issues and can't tell the hiccups on Android.
But here's a screenshot that illustrates another problem:

iUESmzRgJPqaB.png

This happens when he zooms out after zooming back in, most of the page is missing and loads a bit later.

Could it be related to the frame rate problems on ios?

hey, so i was wondering, what's up with "lenses" as a feature. aren't there already a bunch of iOS, Android and even WP apps that already do stuff like that without a fancy catchphrase?

any reason not a single phone looks like this yet ? near bezel - less ? and "nearly paper thin and practically no weight ?

2017 ?

gnex is close but theres still bezels on the top and bottom and a sort of a phat back

put the front facing camera on top of the phones bezel

have a touch panel in the back of the phone ala PSP vita for scrolling websites so you can scroll without touching the screen

and make it 6" and 1080p

The sides of your hands would touch everything when reaching over to touch the other side.

not it won't, you grip it by the edges

original.jpg

and not the bezel with a 5" + screen your not going to want to have any bezel and can still comfortably grip it with one hand without touching the screen/

granted anything above 6" + would be hard to grip with one hand inb4 penis

I don't know man. But there's a reason. There has to be!

this is as much bezel as anyone really needs

not completely bezel less but near bezel less

IFm1T.png

I mean when holding a phone your usually not griping by the bezel anyway

your gripping basically the entire frame of the phone

so getting rid of bezels or going near bezel less can save lots of space and weight

How is the Galaxy Nexus "close"?

gsmarena_025.jpg

Not an impressively thin bezel by any standard.

Regardless, there needs to be a certain amount of housing for the display.

well, how should I say, it gives the illusion of a bezel less design thus far

well when I'm holding my nexus I was just thinking why do I need this bezel anyway when I'm gripping the phone by the back/ frame anyway ?

just make it ALL SCREEN you can easily fit a 5" screen into the frame of the nexus it is bezel less

make the screen as big as the red and ignore the 4 marks as there just square

see how it's just being held by the frame ?

get rid of the hardware buttons and top bezel and just make it a 6" screen phone already

Imagine how Sense would utterly destroy their good looks...

Ehh, the new version is decent looking. So is the latest Touchwiz. I prefer the look of stock (since ICS, but hated it before that), but the skins from HTC and Samsung aren't too horrific and bloated these days. Heck, even Motorola and LG have done better jobs lately (especially Motorola; their skin is practically just stock with some added features).
