Football Manager 2013 - Pre Launch Discussion Roundtable

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
wqZKr.jpg

I was sooo tempted to call the thread "Stammtisch". Sooo tempted, I tell you. Even if only to hint at the super stupid situation of this game not being sold in Germany. Dont let me do the OT or this will end up in the title. Being serious, the OT title should probably contain something about being accessible to genre newcomers with the addition of Football Manager Classic, though.

Anyway, waiting for todays video blog update, I figured I might as well squeeze some discussion in about the presented features in FM13. This thread will double as a daily reminder for the video blog updates and triple as the pre OT discussion platform for the participants of the Beta.

"Beta???" you say? Yes, Beta. Everyone preordering the game will get the game 2 weeks early.

So here are the daily videos:

1. Announcement
2. Match Engine 1
3. Match Day
4. Network Game
5. Leaderboards
6. Match Engine 2
7. Director of Football
8. New Staff Roles
9. Training
10. Competition Updates
11. Comparison
12. Transfers and Contracts 1: Loans and Scouting
13. Transfers and Contracts 2: Transfer Deadline Day
14. Media
15. International Management
16. Interaction
17. FM Classic 1: Introduction
18. FM Classic 2: Pre-Match
19. FM Classic 3: Match Day
20. FM Classic 4: Challenges
21. FM Classic 5: Unlockables
22. Finance
23. Getting Started
24. GUI and Usability 1
25. GUI and Usability 2
26. Match Engine 3
27. Miscellaneous 1
28. Miscellaneous 2
29.

These videos open up quite a lot of discussion potential:

- Inclusion & Execution of FMC
- How accessible is it? "Easy" for newcomers?
- Instant result button
- Microtransactions
- Minor additions to the FM formula like Tax rates
- Improvements on the Match Engine
- New staff roles, needed or redundant
..but I'll do that in the course of the thread.

Todays update:

Getting Started.

Rather uninteresting. I guess the assistant meeting is rather neat which allows you to set up intra squad friendlies on the fly to get to know your squad. Other than that nothing should have too much of a big impact in this update.

I still don´t know how to feel about FM 13. Sure I´ve already pre-ordered but I haven´t heard any news to make it exciting as the previous releases.

Still hoping to hear something about the editor.

Some smaller impressions:

The match engine looks a bit refined, but I cant even put my finger on what exactly, since it still looks rather similar to the FM12 engine. I was hoping it would be a bigger jump.

The new staff roles look interesting, but until I actually play the game, the addition of those seems to be rather... unimportant. More to micromanage I guess, the addition of the head scout might be a way to keep things simpler though. We'll see.

I looove the new leaderboards for challenges and the game modes. There really needs to be an ironman mode one save option only too as people will just cheat/save reload their way to the top of the leaderboards, but its a great way to measure success. Especially, since it now finally gives a use to manager income (which is added to the score).

Tax rates are a small thing that could be a real pain in the ass. Now playing a team in a country with a low tax rate might have gotten quite a bit harder. I'd be fine with that though if its reflected in the leaderboards, like a 1.05x points multiplier for a country with 10% higher tax rate or something.

I don't know what to think about FMC...
I like the idea but am "scared" to play it as I don't want to miss out on anything :/

Football manager series is one I usually eventually play but really I feel I am paying for the new database but practically the same game it does not feel much of a different game each time in latest years. But then if it isn't broke, don't radically change it, so if I was in the designer's place I probably wouldn't do much different.

I wish they had found a way to customize FMC somewhat. I still would like to have the match talks, but I think I can deal with some other omissions if I just want to get a quick round going (like individual training schedules).

Did you watch the FMC videos? Anything specific you felt you might "miss"?

Cheers for the vids. Will have to have a look when my train gets in. Just clicking this thread is giving me the FM twitch.

The official one. I want more options when creating new competitions.

I have never used an FM editor. What does it allow you to do? Like creating a league with english rules but only 10 teams etc?

I was really hoping for a visual upgrade this year. More animations and higher fidelity models.

Yeah, they said there was a big change to the match engine, but... eh.

Yes I watched them just now.
At first glance there is nothing I would miss.

I guess I will try a season (or the demo) with this mode and then decide if I will continue or go back to the traditional FM.

I think I will definitely play FMC as the challenges are FMC mode only. I wish those challenges would be FM too, but I guess it fits better with the more fun approach to FMC. I'll play my normal career in proper FM however.

Seriously, though guys. I love the challenges. And I absolutely hate that they want to microtransaction these. Anyone else an opinion?

I like the assistant commenting here. The match engine sometimes wasnt too clear on where your problems were exactly and looking through all the individual playerstats is rather cumbersome.

The new layout of the player profiles also looks rather neat:

Which reminds me, there now is an option to check for which role a player fits in. Not only position, but also the role like Target Man etc. That is super useful as previously you had to look up on the Internet which stats were important for which role and which player that would be suited for.

Going to watch those videos later. Have they announced a date for the beta yet? The 19th, I assume?

Some people on HUKD who ordered from Grainger Games seem to be talking as if they have codes already, but it seems too early. Nothing for me yet from GMG - I've asked them when codes are sent out, but had no response yet.

That is a pretty good example. You can create new leagues or add lower leagues to the existing leagues, create old competitions that are defunct, create missing teams, staff and players. You can create new countries. You can create fantasy leagues.

That was just the tip of the iceberg, the possibilities are endless. The problem is that the editor is pretty poorly supported and if one would like to make something more advanced it would take some time to finish and release.

This is in the current version as well, in the analysis tab during a match you can select your assistants comments.

The new training looks great imo, and even if there aren't many really new features, it's an insta-buy every damn year.

This also is already in FM 2012, look in the player report. :)

Yeah, apparently 2 weeks prior to the release, which would be the 19th. They said somewhere that, depending on how things go, the length of the Beta might be a tad longer. I assume they rather mean starting the Beta earlier, instead of releasing the game later, but thats just me interpreting.

Yeah, the Beta is NOT yet out. They would have announced that via Twitter/Blog etc. They seem to be very vocal atm. Guess those people just talk about the features in the videos.

Damn. I think you are right. They showed something in a vid that was rather neat though with comparing individual stats for the roles or something. I'll post it again when i find the proper video. Stupid I didnt remember it already was in the game.. but its been a few months >_>

Am I the only one that like the new tax system and dynamic rivalries?

I like the idea of the tax system, since it makes choosing a league even more different from others. I hope that it wont completely screw you over, though. And it really should be included in the score somehow. Players playing an MLS league team or 6th league English team should get a score bonus compared to someone playing Bayern in the German league.

What was that with dynamic rivalries? Cant remember.

I´m already preparing my hate speeches about the danish league stealing top swedish players.

Still nothing official but that one screenshot was showing a rivalry as historic so I´m hoping that they will implement a new rivalry system where other teams can become new rivals.

Ah, that would be neat. How could such a rivalry come about? Comments by the trainers on a press conference? Competing for the same positions yearly? That doesnt quite make it a rivalry already though. Would be nice if its possible somehow though, yeah.

That is a good question. I actually don´t know how they would make it work.

Nothing for me yet from GMG - I've asked them when codes are sent out, but had no response yet.

I asked GMG "When will GMG be sending the FM 2013 beta keys out? The beta doesn't start until next Friday but it'd be good to know when to expect they keys" and they replied "You can access the beta 2 weeks before release. Hope that helps". Then they closed my ticket.

Awesome :lol

What else are they supposed to say if there is no information :P Pretty sure SI will announce it via Twitter once they know a date.

SI will announce what? People who ordered from certain other stores have received their beta codes already so I asked GMG when they'll be sending theirs out. They didn't answer my question at all and just told me when the beta starts (which I already know because I mentioned it in my question to them :P )

Oh, others already got their codes? The beta hasnt started yet though, so codes are kinda useless, arent they? Weird that SI would send codes to one retailer but not to others. You could however tell the GMG support guy that other retailers apparently already give out codes, and wonder why GMG hasnt done so yet, just in case they are supposed to request them from SI or something.

It took them about 10 years to move on from the dots. Be reasonable.

And it took me longer. I only just switched to the 3D engine and I think my coop partner still uses them.

I actually wish the game had a proper text mode. I preferred those in older games compared to the "match engines".

I have fond memories of CM 97/98 and later on 01/02 :*) although I tried going back to 01/02 recently with a data update and it seemed so basic. I've gotten too used to the 3d :(

Yeah, might be that my opinion might be based on carrying my rose tinted nostalgia glasses, but I'd love to try a proper text mode again that is more than just one line per event. They had so much flavor.

Don't they still have that? I haven't checked 2012 but I'm sure in one of the versions from the last couple of years you could choose from 3D, 2D and Text for highlights.

Edit: Ah, misread. The text mode at the moment is indeed only one line at a time I think.

Yeah, since I was missing a proper text mode I started to program my own football manager that was supposed to feature a text mode and posted my progress here on GAF in a thread for it, but the sheer amount of text needed broke me.

The stuff I mean is more like the following examples, small radio commentary entries if you will.

Unfortunately, programming stuff like
"Greetings! We are about to see a match of the German Orediggers from Real Madrid against the Sparkling Pounders from FC Chelsea. The sides are anticipating to start playing."
to be highly variable takes ages.

Another random example from my program:
The weather is really snowy. Here is hoping the players won't get snowed under.

Welcome! We are about to see a match of the Killing Killers from Greenbay against the Modesto German Hornets. The referee is intent to start the match in a little while.

or

Hello to everyone watching this game. The game will be between the Cyborg Hoboes from Providence and the Costamesa Crazy Panthers. The game will start shortly

I looooved reading those subtle commentaries in FM games. I havent gotten much farther since then, AND I lost a file with my most recent progress in a HDD crash, but it definitely was a fun project to start. Hopefully, I'll continue that project one day.

If you ever finish it I'd give it a go mate :)

Btw if anyone is feeling nostalgic, Eidos made CM 01/02 available for free. That website has updated databases/patches that change the start year too if you don't like the old data.

Haha, thanks for the offer. I already put quite a lot of work into it, as I documented in the thread, and it really would be of a waste to scrap it completely. Who knows.

Btw, does anyone know of a "fun" Football Manager that would still run on current day operating systems? Back in the stone ages, I played these games:

51N51HFKMNL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
ASC03_anstoss2.jpg

And it had super funny text mode commentary like players stumbling over stuff and crazy moves happening. Cant find my DVD version of that anymore though, I'd doubt it would still run anyway :/ The Anstoß series was super fun, but I couldnt get it to work either.

Sigh. So many memories.

Anyway, on topic about FM Classic.

Do you guys think you'll play it? I am a bit sour they included micro payments for basic game features like unlockable achievements and challenges, but I actually DO like the achievements and challenges for the faster FM mode, which is also going to be the reason I'll play it.

I am really looking forward trying my hand at half a season of micromanaging a certain aspect to perfection, like in the "Give Youth a chance" challenge.

I am still not too convinced it will actually be easy enough for "Newcomers", though as I thought this mode was for. It actually seems to be aimed at FM players who try to play some seasons without the micromanagement that the full mode requires.

What I really, really like is the idea of the "Instant game" button though. Some games will very likely be won, no matter what you do in a game or not. Wasting time to start up the match engine, go through press talk etc is a bit annoying for small friendlies that dont matter to me and that I only do to keep up the morale/fitness. I mean it even has this match plan option which allows to exchange players at a certain time or under a certain condition. Anyone who would object to that option being in the full game?

Not feeling the hype just yet although I put thousands of hours into each FM, but it always comes later for me closer to release. Also really hope greenman gaming also get that early access cause I already pre-ordered there.

"Hey football fans,

We've now received confirmation that we will be able to offer the beta access to Football Manager 2013 to our users. We can also confirm the release date as November 2nd 2012."

I know I gonna buy it, but I think this time, is not on pre, this year the game don't hit me like all the others, and I have a BIG disappoint with 2012... =/

Why were you disappointed with 12?

They do. I checked the list in the link on the email that was sent out, and they were on it.

Why were you disappointed with 12?

I move from a victorious career on 2011 to a nothing, I said NOTHING works on 2012. LOL

I don't know why but nothing I put up in the 2012 works, it's sad...

Time spend on FM 2011 - 1000+

Time spend on FM 2012 - 400 -

I know I gonna hop in on the 2013 train, but I don't feel confidence right now, maybe I give 2012 one more try. LOL

I still don´t know how to feel about FM Classic I´ll probably try it out but won´t play it that much.

By the way which team are you all going to play first?

I´m probably going with my home team Malmö FF.

I just bought FM2012 for 7 bucks a few days ago.

Why? I don't think I can afford FM2013 anytime soon, plus I plan to avenge Man. Utd. premiership title loss to the scum Manchester City.

We should do a GaFM league!
Anyone who is getting fm13 add me on steam Dan_Dan_Dan
That could be really cool, but wouldnt a matchday take ages if we are waiting on 10 people? How would that even work. Not everyone is on at the same time and I cant imagine asynchronous to work for that many.
