Thanks for the help. Think these are any better? I've been messing around with the Feather tool a bit lately, so I'm trying to see what combination works best. Out of these, the middle one looks the best to me.

The white is around the scarf. You have to manually erase them since some tools usually don't do that good of a job. But yea the middle one is the best from those.

Anyone has a spare avatar? Feeling like changing.

Well, since you didn't specify what you wanted as your avatar..

This is a fan art from a game called Fly'n.

Does anyone have tips on how to more easily crop backgrounds than just lassoing stuff out?

What program are you using? I'm working with Paint.NET and I use the "magic wand" tool. Its effectiveness completely depends on the image in question. You can adjust the tolerance level and hope it detects the edges properly but sometimes you will just have to do some cleaning up to smooth out the edges on the target image.

It doesn't have a background.

Resized it for you. Let me take a guess and say that you were uploading the large versions to GAF and that those showed a background. If that's the case then...

The image must be 100x120 or smaller, otherwise GAF resizes it and it loses the background transparency.

I have tried repeatedly to find an avatar that I like but I'm just coming up blank. I think at this point I'm just too close to it to make a decision.

But if someone has any suggestions or something they think would suit me I'll happily (and gratefully) use it.

Haha... it was just a joke... if you want something for real you'll have to be a little more specific. Like list a couple things that you like (music, movies, games, whatever) and maybe someone can think of something.

Not really all that clear because of the compression but I think it's recognizable enough. Right one is transparent. Can't really see it on this posts bg-color.

I've never been in this thread before but its pretty cool that people here will just whip up avatars (within reason) for other users voluntarily.

I wanted to make an avatar that was something related to Philadelphia mashed with GAF. My thought is to use the look of our iconic LOVE statue:

Then change it to say NEOGAF, but with three letters on top and three on bottom. Like this:

NEO
GAF

And the O cocked to the side like the sculpture, same font/recognizable style of the sculpture.

Research suggests Clarendon is the best starting font to use.

It would be awesome if it looked kind of 3D like a sculpture, but that's unnecessary and probably really hard.

Is this hopelessly complicated?

It's probably not too complicated... I'll give it a shot when I get home if nobody else has.

I need to relearn Illustrator. Not that I was ever an expert, but I'm sure there's stuff that would be handy to know.

Quick and dirty. You didn't mention colours so I stuck with original.

Will be nice to see what t-ramp does when they get home =] Relearning Illustrator is very handy. With more time I'm sure a better job can be done. All I did was a Effect > 3D > Extrude & Bevel.
