Didn't see this posted yet, but Gamasutra has chimed in. The last paragraph is especially pertinent, I think:

http://gamasutra.com/view/news/1801...Video_game_cultures_weird_identity_crisis.php

Mock if already posted.

Now in Eurogamer, Rob Florence critiqued the UK's Games Media Awards as a display of cronyism and amateurishness, and he was not necessarily wrong. At the GMAs, a minor scandal broke on Twitter when so called "professional" media were encouraged to try to win a PlayStation 3 by tweeting some corporate hashtag -- and like a bunch of fanboys, some did.

Damn.

Did Geoff Keighley respond yet?

Geoff Keighley can't come to the phone right now.

The entire situation is incredibly annoying. Eurogamer's credibility is severely damaged. Did they even pursue legal advice on the matter before the decision was made? What was the length of time before the original article was 'updated'?

Considering the context, I would support a total boycott of Eurogamer. If other news gaming sites and forum admins agreed to do similar, it could prove devastating

You shouldn't boycott Eurogamer without also boycotting MCV, who sent the complaint in the first place.

What if Geoff Keighly planned this all along, watching the flames and wreckage from his ivory tower, licking is dorito/dew cupcake stained fingers with glee.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
His best course of action is not to. I think at this point he's going to stay out of it and let it blow over lest it refocus back on him.

Yeah, there is no way out of this for him. He cant blame anyone for it.

He should clarify what he is doing surrounded by Doritos and Dew.

Geoff Keighly, where you trying to make some kind of comment on the state of games journalism?

And even i am moderately surprised
What about a super UK combo games show?

Charlie Booker, Jaz Rignal, Rab and Ryan, etc....

"Scorn to be Wired" or something

I feel bad about the amazon guy getting banned, he was really nice to everyone about deals, customer service etc. Sure he gets paid for that but still, I'm not entirely sure the intent of the thread was as cynical/negative as gaf thought. But I do agree publishers should stay away obviously.

True, but if these are the same journalists that are saying that he should watch out for "enemies at PR events," he probably should anyway. Saying stuff like that is just crossing the line even more.

I guess that it's possible that he may name names down the line. But he seems pretty shaken up about the whole situation right now. Can't really blame him either.

Reading through some other articles that have been posted about games journalism will show you that he isn't the only one that knows people in the industry that are doing shady things. It just doesn't really seem like many are willing/ready to blow this thing up.

I actually like Geoff. I think he's in a bad spot where he wants to be open but also is in a position to market and endorse. I will say this, he pimps his reveals but has always done so knowing that we know who it's coming from. I don't think I've ever seen him do anything out of bounds. I personally welcome his opinion.

This is all a cluster. Many cans of worms have been opened.

What Geoff Keighly did was pretty stupid but the man clearly loves and respects video games. His final hours stuff is really great.

I think games journalism is a similar issue to games-as-art. Just accept the truth instead of being so damn pretentious.

The problem with games as art is that you need good criticism to develop that idea. And games criticism right now is largely lost in a sea of dew.

Not bitter, just unsweetened
this is inspiring me to become a games journalist

i mean... look at the competition! everyone is corrupt as hell.

thanks for the laugh
i know rab, and he knows me.

by that, i mean we've never met and he has no idea who i am, but he still knows me. he knows my heart. rab florence is made of love.

as a long time watcher of his consolevania stuff, i smiled like a estranged but proud father to watch him segway over to more familiar haunts like RPS and more recently eurogamer. his gaming pieces are like seeing through the matrix; devoid of the usual codes and conventions which hold a lesser writer bent over a pinball table.

life is fickle and precious, i have no time for a cold utilitarian checkpoint or your pitch for a job that you'd rather tell sophisticated people about at parties, i just want to enjoy our time together.

i've always enjoyed our time together, rab. run free, no regrets. you will find somewhere for your love one day.

Journalists and PR treat gamers as if we are idiots.

Which, judging from the people defending Lauren and Geoff, we may be.

"Scorn to be Wired" or something

Charlie's got a kid now, plus he's writing some of the best stuff on telly- Black Mirror and Touch of Cloth. I'd love Gameswipe to become a full-on thing but that moment's passed, plus to be honest I reckon he's a bit out-of-touch with all that nowadays...

A lot of this stink would just go away if we stopped using the term "games journalism." We set our own expectations with the label.

If we just replaced "games journalism" with "enthusiast press" or "fanboys without marketing degrees", we wouldn't have to complain that the journalism side has failed us.
