Wii U's Miiverse - A Guide for Dummies

If it's true that some 3rd party games won't utilize miiverse, and if we assume that it's mostly because they didn't find out about it until too late, then perhaps they could patch in miiverse integration.

I say that and then realize I have no real idea what miiverse integration would even mean. =)

It's been speculated that the "message board" aspect of miiverse is built in and developers don't need to do anything for that. I assume that we will see miis grouping up around popular games despite their miiverse use, so what miiverse integration are some 3rd parties not going to have?

I did not want to start a new thread with that video because I posted like a bunch of threads yesterday... I don't want to over do it so if someone wants to start a thread for the new Xplay video please be my guest.

never seen anything like this before for ZombiU wonder if it's Miiverse at all?

still Miiverse is feature I am most hyped about hope to see it in more games.

I would love to see Need For Speed Most Wanted Wii U delayed months into next year just to have it in there along with all the other features.

Wasn't there a video of Wii U at some event where the woman said the word UPlay when talkin about Zombi U messages. I really should note this stuff down for future reference. I can't even remember what event but it was 2-3 months ago now IIRC.

I think I remember something like that. Would not be shocked since EA has Original for all its Wii U games. It's not like these guys need Nintendo Network when they have their own agendas.

hope we get enough news by Friday I am constantly changing my mind on my launch titles as is.

Personally I'm not too worried about a unified achievement system as I think they're pretty naff. I'd be very happy with game specific rewards for the most part.

That said, if they allowed Mii related awards that could be nice.

Nintendo's biggest problem is it's lack of openness with the third parties. Only ZombieU seems to have Miiverse integration because Nintendo and Ubisoft have a strong relationship going into launch. Everyone else seems to be left in the dust.

Seems that might not be the case MrGame&Watch. Which means it has it's own notification system, which was hinted at back in 2011 with Wii U's open online approach. Maybe future integration with Miiverse will happen though.

It'd be cool if Nintendo surprised everyone and used Mario Kart Wii U to show off their online/Miiverse plans at the next Nintendo Direct thing.

I really can't wait to see the next Mario Kart and how it'll used the Gamepad.

Anybody know if they are perma bans on D-e-f- and Mihael Mello Keehl?

Dang it. I hope not. I don't really see what they did either (unless it's the hivemind thing again?). -.-

Yeah, I think that has a few new details. I'll post it if no one else has (I'll ask the mods first). I think I've only ever made one thread, so there's no chance of me posting too much.

Miiverse ready at launch (you have to be online to download it) and achievements/trophy system (through Miiverse) also confirmed by Julie Gagnon, Canadian Nintendo rep.

Yeah, It also surprised me but it's what she said. We'll need clarifications hre.
That's what she said, but then she added you'd just need an online connection to access it. She might not be a technical person.

She confirms achievements and trophies through miiverse. Weird, I thought I read Nintendo would not do it?

As far as I recall, Bill Trinen simply stated they would not force developers to implement achievements. I guess it's there on an optional level, for multiplat titles/etc.

Maybe you can share your achievements on Miiverse, but it's not like Ps3/Xbox 360 achievements.
Looks at that NSMB U screenshot where you can see "cleared under 100 seconds", it might be like that.

It's a little strange that Nintendo hasn't released any information on Miiverse or
the eshop/online. I can't wait to get mine(preordered on announcement day) ,but I'm worried that features are not going to be available at launch or either online is not very robust. We are getting very close to launch with not a lot of transperancy.

Download it? I thought it was built into their OS.

I don't think it's actually uncommon for there to be a firmware update right away on new hardware. There's some time between building the final image they need provide to manufacturing and the actual hardware release date that they can use to further develop the OS.

it's pretty much a given

Plus there is really no point to Miiverse unless you're going to take your console online anyway.

Nice find. What I really want to hear about is exactly how their account system will work. I was against going digital at first, but now I'm thinking of maybe doing a little conversion to digital. I just would like to hear exactly how their's is implemented (obviously we've already gotten some details, but most of that was a long time ago and inclomplete).

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
It's weird really, way back during the pre-E3 WUSTs, we said "What will there be to speculate on after E3?"

I don't think anyone expected that we'd still be in the dark about certain Wii U features a month before launch.

The same can be said of Xbox Live and Playstation Network. But I wonder what the statistics are for consoles sold to online account activation? Assuming you're only counting one account per unique console ID.

Reps are so iffy to trust, but I truly hope there are system wide achievements as she seems to state. I don't want to start the whole pro and anti achievement discussion, but in my opinion they are a welcome feature that I would love. If they implemented them in virtual console titles and such I would be ecstatic. Highly unlikely but yeah..

It's Nintendo. They began the trends of rumble, analog sticks and motion controls. Of course they're going to be extremely secretative.

But I will agree that being in the dark, 20-some-odd days out from launch, has become annoying.

As far as achievements go I thought all Nintendo had really meant, was that they would not require 3rd parties to hook achievements into their games. But if they wanted to, they could leverage Miiverse in order to do it.

That never meant that there wouldn't be some kind of standardized form that "accomplishment" announcements take through the Miiverse. Perhaps there is a set framework for it, along with a place that in-game achievements can be viewed for your account.

It's kind of like how developers are not required to give their games avatar awards on 360, but the place where you list and equip avatar awards is a standard part of the interface.

That is how I've always interpreted the achievement talk too.

Can't wait till the 18th so we can talk more freely about the Wii U and its online store! Not long to go now!

Hmm, we'll know all the details at that date, but maybe they can share experiences from a dev standpoint.

I just went through my entire Wii calendar. There was so much lost potential. I hope Wii U still keeps records of your play time. I loved reading about the medals I earned in Wii Sports ad Wii Play. Seeing messages about how my mother reached Pro status in Wii Sports Bowling evoked memories of those first few weeks.

The biggest thing they can improve is the Friend Code business.

Since release, I've only added six or so friends. Being friends didn't even offer that much. Messages were slow and cumbersome. Both individuals had to input the code. Messages could only be read if the date ia set to the day they were received. You could say it felt isolating. I wrote several memos on each day Brawl was supposed to be released (that was a good laugh). I only inputted my family's birthdays that first year. The only games that sent messages were the Wii line of games and Mario Kart Wii. By 2008, most messages were just about the Check Mii Out Channel.

If MiiVerse allows easy connectivity between games, specific friends, general players, and family, I'll be very happy.

accomplishments, woooo!

i finally installed the nintendo channel on my wii, it was cool seeing my activity log compiled like that - 110+ hours in Metroid Prime Trilogy, haha. just a shame i played so many games on the HD loader that it doesnt log.

it's an aside, but i hope that bit transfers over somehow. they should be viewable too!

Yeah, that doesn't sound right. I can't believe Nintendo would plan on having their online store, Miiverse and account system info on lockdown until the damn thing launches. I've been thinking about going a little more digital and was thinking about getting NSMBU that way, but I want confirmation on what I should do before I get the system.

I don't know where to post this, and it's not new thread worthy. Plus I don't know if it's new info to begin with. Ubisoft is holding their UBIDAY event in Japan today to the public and there are reports on Twitter that Assassin's Creed III will be playable entirely on the gamepad at launch, though it wasn't playable on the gamepad at the event. Take with a huge grain of salt, etc.

And here's a pic from the event.

Edit: Based on what Iwata said during the Q&A session regarding their quarterly financial results, it sounds like there's a Nintendo Direct coming up before launch that will focus on Miiverse. Also, Miiverse is built in to Wii U and will be available at launch.

And is this the first time the Miiverse logo has been shown? The info on the slide isn't anything new.

Iwata didn't say anything about a focus, but he did say that he wants to explain the Miiverse service in detail through Nintendo Direct by the time the Wii U launches.

Why does the person in the foreground have blood on their back?

Why does the person in the foreground have blood on their back?

1) Maybe it's a printed AC3 t-shirt that a welcoming Ubi hostess gave to this guy at the event entrance. He put it in front of shy female reporters of major Japanese game outlets, who subsequently run away, provoking the lack of crucial hands-on articles that could have boosted the future sales.

2) The photographer just puked raspberries jelly on the dude in front of him, that a welcoming Ubi hostess handed at the event entrance as a cocktail stuff.

Advice to ubi: beware of hostess.

next ubi license: raving waitress, you hear it first

it was my Saturday pathetic attempt at humor, move along

Right, that was just my wording of it.

Here's the literal translation if anyone cares:

「Miiverse」が具体的にどんなサービスかということは今いろいろご説明をする準備をしていて、ここでご説明するには時間もかかり過ぎますので、「Nintendo Direct」を通じてWii U発売までにくわしくお伝えできるようにしたいと思っています

"We're currently preparing to explain just what kind of service Miiverse is. It would take too long to explain everything at this event, so I'd like to convey such information in detail via Nintendo Direct by the time of Wii U's release."

It's Nintendo. They began the trends of rumble, analog sticks and motion controls. Of course they're going to be extremely secretative.
I don't see how announcing and even demoing rumble, motion controls and analog sticks long before the 64 and Wii launches has anything to do with not giving details regarding Wii U online implementation in general.

If they do have anything revolutionary, MS and Sony have at least a year to copy it. The secretive excuse doesn't stand to reason.

ha @ the idea that Nintendo is going to come up with some radical idea with their social network that Microsoft and Sony wouldn't have already thought of years ago considering they haven't spent the better part of the last decade in the stone age

people have some really cute ideas about Nintendo's capabilities

the secret innovation shit is BS

Satoru Iwata said:

Also, on Nintendo platforms up to this point, in order to become friends with people on the same system (specified people with whom you could exchange data), you were required to mutually enter numbers called "Friend Codes." This was set in place in order to prevent negative gameplay experiences caused by a few people who might derive pleasure from anonymously harassing strangers, so that games could be played without that worry. On the Wii U, you can become friends with people who share your tastes through the Miiverse, so increasing the number of people to enjoy games with is its critical mission.
