If anyone is looking for just a basic headset, I've been sitting on this Sennheiser X320 from PAX East this year. I just have no use for it.

uwp5H.jpg

You selling? What are the X320 like compared to other senn headphones? Potentially interested

This shit was fucking hilarious

"kyle J clutches it and tosses the flag up. He's yelling to me … that he's going to die in mid-air while lifting up. I'm hoping that he makes it long enough for the flag to reach me. It does. I'm running it inside the tower, frantically asking my teammates, ‘Where do I go? Should I just drop it down?’ Tawpgun, who's flying the Banshee, says, ‘Wanna try something crazy?’ I immediately know what he's talking about. He wants me to ride on his Banshee and score the flag that way. I'm still running in that direction, but I'm still undecided. What do I do? Tawpgun flies [the] Banshee right into me, dropping my shields. It was definitely a laugh-out-loud moment, but we were all worried about not capturing the flag. Of course, the other team lifts up and kills me easily. [Tawpgun] also gets shot down in the Banshee. We end up capturing the flag and winning the series, so we were able to have a laugh at it later on.”"
It was a love tap <3

I don't need it, but I'd rather not use a separate mic. I guess ultimately sound quality comes first since I'm buying them for campaign/Spartan Ops immersion.

I have the HD555's paired with an astro mix amp and love em. There is a guy who does a beautiful job on custom headphone modding, and actually built a mic into my HD555's. Works better than any headset out there in terms of quality I'd say. Take a look through his stuff, mine are the yellow and black ones.

Well, imo, it's always a better option to buy good quality stereo headphones and get virtual surround sound (through Astro's mixamp) instead of getting headsets with 4 small drivers in each earcup, which end up with delivering mediocre sound quality and aren't good for anything outside of gaming (movies/music) compared to sterio headphones at least.

In fact, most surround-sound advertised headsets nowadays are stereo and use Dolby tech to get virtual surround - not that there's anything wrong with that, it's the best solution if you ask me.

If the headphones have good soundstage, then they'll have good surround sound too - I think (not an expert myself)

About the microphone, I have a zalman mic attached to my sennheisers, and no one complained about the quality thus far (2 years now). Of course if Hitmonchan wants a boom mic he can either buy one and glue it in, or get a headset (from a trusted company)

My advice:
- Astro Mixamp
- Any non-gaming stereo headphone/headset of your choice
- (in case of headphones) cheap microphone, like a zalman mic

I think you might be generalizing a little much on how gaming headsets are only good for gaming. I've heard good things about Astro's and how they sound with music and my PC350's sound better than HD555's for everything. I don't doubt though that there are gaming headsets that are only good for gaming. My audio setup is kind of ideal for my pc/xbox setup so that's why I champion it so much.

I've got My Xbox and PC hooked up on 1 desk with 2 monitors. I've got an Astro Mixamp and the Sennheiser PC350's. With the way it's wired, I have simultaneous audio and voice to both my head and PC. So I can live stream, do podcasts and play games on both PC and Xbox 360 without moving any cables or hitting any switches. Because my headset is hooked up to my PC as well I'm listening to music with the PC350's almost exclusively and I'm in love with how they sound. They're obviously not 300$ Audiophile headphones but they're certainly better than my HD555's before after the ear cup rubber removal mod.

When I was gaming with my HD555's getting a proper mic setup was always a chore and honestly pretty janky. I either used a cell phone mic that was hidden under an earcup but cellphone mics obviously don't give you great sound. I also had an official wireless 360 headset that I would tuck under an earcup as well. That used to hurt my ear after some hours.

Just my opinion. Since I've gone to a legit setup, I don't know how I managed before it.

How has peoples experience been with MS Store online pre-orders? I switched my pre order to there from newegg, should I be expecting release day delivery or do they ship on release day?

Speaking of headsets... this thing was GOAT for Original Xbox Live players

Memories.

I remember that thing. Seems forever ago. That was the best option for not using that shitty original XBOX Live headset that would break and constantly need to be taped up.

Freely admitting that my original Live headset was one of those with the duct tape and the hot glue in a vain attempt to salvage it.

I find it funny with the better range and quality headsets out there for the 360, there are less and less people on the voice chat in comparison to those days.

The vocal minority is a sack of shit, so people either party chat or don't bother at all.

Party Chat pretty much killed the social aspect of Live.

Also, if you go into party chat in Halo 3 and Reach and set your voice chat to Headset and Speakers, you can hear the other team talking, but they can't hear you.

Are there any legitimately decent headsets with detachable mics?

I'm currently using some Sennheisers with a 360 mic, and I hate it. My Sennheisers are getting a little worn, so I'm looking into getting a new headsets. I've been looking for what I like to call my "dream headset" - good quality (both sound and construction), is operable with 360, PC, and simple iPod and DJ use (hence the detachable mic). Can't seem to find anything like this, and I'm really not sure what my options are. Price isn't too big of an issue if a headset like this exists.

DopeyFish

Not bitter, just unsweetened
fuck those original headsets

those things hurt like a bitch after an hour or two of playing

taking it off sometimes felt like ripping off a piece of my ear

I thought the Astro's had a detachable mic. Or maybe it's just the A30's?

Do Astro's have an option to work with a simple headphone jack? I brought a pair of Tritton AX720's, and they had that capability, but they were extremely uncomfortable.

Oh I wasn't comparing headset quality VS headphone quality. I was talking about stereo (1 big 40-50mm driver in each earcup) VS analog(?) surround sound headsets (4 or 5 20mm drivers in each earcup)

AFAIK both Astro A40 and your PC350 are stereo headsets

Btw I also have a similar setup. 2 monitors, same headset for both xbox and PC. With the mixamp I can reduce the game's audio and listen to a podcast more clearly without touching the monitor/pc volume directly. Quite wonderful

I don't see why people lament the lack of friendly fire. I mean sure, have FF promotes teammates being more aware and stuff, but it seems like such a petty thing to worry about.

So is friendly fire gone from all MM game types? Also is it allowed in customs at least?

Friendly fire is gone in the "Infinity" gametypes. No idea on the objective playlists. It's allegedly turned on in Slayer Pro.

Although all of that could be changed day 1 as the gametypes and map variants are loaded for each match.

It was a core tenet of Halo.

Do friendly players block bullets? Or do sniper shots, tank rounds, etc., just pass straight through teammates?

I'm about 300 pages into Glasslands. So far it's definitely slower than Nylund's entries, but still not bad. It does have an odd about-face with respect to the outlook on the spartan program as a whole. I'm still undecided on whether I like that change of heart or not.

speaking of headsets... can anyone recomend a pair to a non-audiophile that are "good enough"? i'd like something that can at least do a decent job of simulating surround, and with a headphone, but dont want to pay several hundred for an astro a40...

What do you mean work with a simple headphone jack? They connect with just 1 3.5mm cable I believe.

Oh, I misread then.

And yea they are stereo.

look at it this way. lets say it is 49-48 and you and a teammate is trying to kill this one person to tie it up. You will not throw grenades in front of your teammate because it will get him killed faster, but you have to hope he doesn't get killed by the other guy. Now there is no worries at all. So it matters in close games.

It matters in every game in my opinion.

Still wondering if friendly players (teammates) block bullets. Can I shoot a sniper round straight through a teammate? Can I fire a tank round through a friendly?

It does, but it is magnified in close games. I don't think we can shoot through our teammate that would technically be unfair if we could. I would just hate if I shoot a rocket and my teammate some hows shields the enemy from it.

Ahhh, that's what I meant. So far a pair of Astro A40's seems to be the way to go.

Just a heads up - A40's don't have a true closed design (they aren't really open-back either). Some sound leaks out and you can still hear the outside a bit. It's a middle of the road thing. Don't know if this is bad for your DJ needs

Guys, I think I went over the deep end.

When I was getting ready to give way on my second set of bench presses I needed to figure out how to motivate myself. There were a million possibilities floating around in the back of my head (most of my thought processing being devoted to "YOU DON'T HAVE A SPOTTER DON'T DROP THIS OH FUCK OH FUCK") and the thing that came to the forefront was "I am worthy". That's been on my mind a lot, lately, because it's actually a pretty heavy phrase when you think about it. It's deceptively simple in construction but has a great deal of depth to it. A great combination of meaning and simplicity.

So I shouted "AAAXIIIOOOOOS" at the top of my lungs and got myself pumped enough to finish the set.

So does that mean I'm beyond redemption or...?

EDIT: About to go out for my run. I hope Queen pops up on Master Chief Radio. It's always a delightful surprise.

I use the Turtle Beach HPX's that came out a few years ago for PC. I use em with the Astro Mixamp, surround sound on them is very good and are comfortable. Were very well priced at ~$80. I think the model is renamed to HPA-2's but I've heard they are not nearly as good, and are more expensive.

I'd be pissed if Cortana died, especially if it was just because of rampancy. Chief and Cortana got literally swallowed by Forerunner technology. Finding a way to extend Cortana's life should be a piece of cake. It wouldn't be a cop out. Cortana is one of Halo's most interesting characters, and I'd be so disappointed if she wasn't there for the ride on this new saga.

And killing Cortana off merely to see how Chief deals with it would be pretty shallow, in my opinon. There are far more interesting ways to examine their relationship and Chief's own emotions. Killing Cortana off just to see Chief be sad is such a typical narrative. Strong, stoic male loses the person he was closest to, and has to deal with his feelings quietly and by himself because that's what men do. It's been done a million times over, and it would be absolutely counter to 343's goals of giving Chief humanity.

Edit : You want to see Chief struggle with his emotions? Then let him actually HAVE emotions. Killing Cortana would be killing Chief's biggest connect to his emotions. If Cortana died, it's not like we would see Chief shed a tear, or hear him monologue about his loss. Cortana is essential to digging into Chief's psyche and enabling him to relate emotionally. I have no idea if I'm making any sense. I'm not a writer, lol, but I definitely feel strongly about how this should/shouldn't play out.
Disagree for a couple of reasons:
-I don't want Cortana to be killed off to "make Chief cry", I don't Cortana to be killed of to make Chief a real character. One that actually makes decisions and deals with the repercussions of that. He's a robot in the first three games, Cortana tells him what's going on and what to do, and then he does it. That's it. How am I supposed to give a shit about that, my main character isn't a character at all.
-Very much a cop-out if "wow new technology", we magically save Cortana at the last hour, yay! We know (only publically 343 released info, but spoilering to be safe)
That Chief is going to try to find a solution to Cortana's rampancy in H4. It would be vastly more interesting and powerful if he fails to find one.
Orinance.

Is it possible to have both Personal and Global Ordnance in Infinity Slayer? Just wondering, i wouldn't want to play it like that.
Uh, that's how it works.
no, what do you think this is?

apple doesnt make xboxes

If Apple made it, it wouldn't have USB ports at all.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, it's nice to keep them on and hear a person talking next to you. However, what would you suggest for what I want?
