I mean you're right, SW is campy in some regards.. but mostly because of the era it was filmed. I like Joss, but when I watch a Joss film it feels like forced campyness.. like MacGyver or The A Team or something.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I feel Avengers lacked that, mind. He could probably pull off a fun Star Wars film.

He's far better off with Marvel, mind.

It's also campy because it was very consiously aping the style of 1930s adventure serials. It's actually a "retro-styled" series of films. So many people fail to realize this, especially younger generations.

Joss doesn't fit in my opinion. Duncan Jones, Matthew Vaughn, and Edgar Wright do though.

[EDIT: For people who don't know. Episode 7 is scheduled for 2015, so is Avengers 2. It's going to be a big year for Disney and I doubt Joss can handle two tentpole summer movies at the same time.]

cute.

I can see Hamill coming back as the Obi-Wan character, raising Leia (now dead) and Han's (Captured) son to be a Jedi etc..

Haha, that is great!

I tought it was funny.

I never considered Edgar Wright, but I feel like I'd just be doing the "He's my favourite director thing" that everybody who likes Nolan is doing, more than him actually being fitting to take on such a task.

Just FYI, I don't consider Joss a serious candidate because of his Marvel commitments. It was more just a joke suggestion to rile GAF ;P

Are you guys basing your hate of Star Wars just off the PT? because the OT, EU videogames and even the Clone Wars are all pretty fucking awesome.

Here's the deal. everyone attributed the success of those films to lucas before the prequels came out.

After seeing him wreck not one but three films in quick succession, people started taking a harder look at his non star wars work that wasn't so great, and determining that star wars just might have been successful in spite of him, not because of him.

OR, it's totally possible that lucas just got worse as he got older.

People credit Star Wars's success to Kirshner (Robocop 2), Gary Kurtz (Slipstream), Lawrence Kasdan (Dreamcatcher), Marcia Lucas (nothing else).

Lets face it. Star Wars and Empire especially was lightning in a bottle. George got the idea and guided it through to completion using and working with people he thought were talented. He cast the thing, made sure it had a look that was suitable by hiring the right artists, etc. Most importantly, he made sure he owned it and the studio didn't. The help he found and hired along the way was simply perfect given the time.

All the material since is a product of age and changing sensibilities. Some of the ideas and situations in the prequels are great. Some of it not.

Brad Bird should direct. He already has a great working relationship with Disney and proved with Ghost Protocol that he can do live action spectacle.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
I'm excited. If it's a clean break and Lucas is kept at arms length this could be amazing. Everybody involved this time around won't have to bow to his every whim, we all know what the problems were.

Ghost Protocol is great, but it just doesnt have the "heart" Star Wars desperately needs.

I'm sure this will spark nerd rage... but I am totally fine with them totally dumping the EU for moviemaking purposes.

The only reason I suppose they won't is because they still gotta sell books/comics/games/etc.

is the EU even cannon? I mean, the only part I know about it is by playing the Rogue Squadron games...

It's pesudo-cannon... something like: you can assume something is true unless it interferes with something in the films.

But I'm sure a greater nerd than I could go into detail... I think this stuff has been layed down as LucasFilm law somewhere :p

I can't conceive of any way they could make something worse than the prequels. People can hate on John Carter all they like, but even it's better than any of those movies.

yup. Carter is actually a solid film, and one I suspect will hit "cult" status in a few years. It was horribly overbudget and marketed like shit though (partly through no fault of its own...) which doomed it.

Is it POSSIBLE to make a sci fi film shittier than the prequels? sure. Is it probable that this will happen, with Disney making it a tentpole film, and no more directors/writers (i.e. Lucas) that can't be reined in? Not really.

EU stuff is canon until Lucas says it isn't, basically.
