Tried Advance Wars: DS and was really turned off by the lack of continuity between levels. No matter how good or bad you did on one level, it made no difference to the next level. Basically made it seem like of bunch of disconnected training levels that happened to have a story running through them. Are all Advance Wars games like that?

I played Mario and even if I did really well in one level, I had to do the whole of the next level. But seriously why would you expect to have bonuses from the previous level? Yes all advance wards games are like that, and I love them.

Well, this is more of a general strategy game concept than an Advance Wars concept.

When going between missions in an RTS, the next mission usually isn't effected outside of having more units unlocked.

The same tends to apply to games like platformers where nothing but lives or occasionally new tools carry over.

Edit:

You might prefer XCOM. Your performance is very persistent.

Oh. Love Fire Emblem, for example. However, there it's an RPG where you level up, gain special weapons, recruit new team members, and improve relationships with people during a battle, and that all carries over to the next level and affects the ease/difficultly of completing the next level. Before playing the DS game, was real excited by people saying that AW was like FE, and both being made by IS really was a good sign of that. Then it turned out that AW had no carryover from level to level like FE did, which was a big downer.

Answers the question of if it's ever worth it for me to try AW again, though. :lol

I played Mario and even if I did really well in one level, I had to do the whole of the next level.

Even in Mario, you carried over your status from level to level. If you were Fire Mario when you cleared 2-2, you didn't revert back to mini-Mario in 2-3. AW really came off like a bunch of disconnected training levels to me, as a result. You obliterated the enemy in the previous level or you squeaked by on the last unit. Either way, the next level was exactly the same for each player. Why even bother trying to do well on the previous level, then?

But seriously why would you expect to have bonuses from the previous level?

Because I didn't go into it thinking it was a bunch of disconnected training levels with some kind of story supposedly holding it all together.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
I wonder how long Nintendo will take so that online and retail are released at the same time.

Well it's been happening for pretty much all 1st party games now, but if you're looking for a 3rd party game Layton vs. AA is going to have a same day release on the eShop I believe.

Bought! I passed on importing from Play-asia, but I'm getting it from the eshop.
Same. I've had trouble with my bank account, so the only way I can order anything online is by transferring money to my paypal balance. It's set to clear £110 tomorrow, which I was planning to use to get BDFF and a PSN card from PlayAsia, but now I'll just borrow a relatives card to get it off the eShop, using my PayPal balance to get RF4 instead.

Yes, speaking of which I wonder if there's any chance we could see a sequel announced sometime next year. Intelligent Systems is relatively small so they can either try HD development on Wii U or continue to make 3DS games. I kind of hope they stick to 3DS because I hope Nintendo doesn't think they can basically sit on their heels with the 3DS like they did with the DS once the Wii came out.
They're probably better a fit on the 3DS, considering the games they make.

I think that Wii U gamepad is perfect for Fire Emblem.

But the game is much better suited to being on a handheld system. They have already seen that the 3DS user base is interested in the series and with the user base growing so rapidly the choice is a no brainer really. The fact that development would be far cheaper probably doesn't hurt either (and they already have experience on 3DS).

this could be applied to almost every game for the Japanese market. should we think that N will develop only for 3DS and no more for home console?
Probably just party games are a better fit for the home console market, due to multiplayer sessions, in the Nintendo portfolio.
Plus, the Gamepad could be able to propose some of the portable advantages of the 3DS to the game, thanks to the double screen, the touch controls and the off-tv gameplay, so...

I really hope they'll go ahead with the series also on home console.

Just because it can be applied to all games doesn't mean it should be. IS make more portable friendly games than console games, leave Wii U dev to other teams in Nintendo.

Although I wouldn't mind IS on the Wii U, they should flip it again and make Mario & Luigi RPG 4 for the it. It'd be awesome to see that art style in HD glory.

Oh and perfect timing for BD's release on the e-shop, hopefully not too many lost sales due to stock problems.

No it couldn't. Not every game in Japan is that well suited to handhelds (final fantasy, resident evil, zelda, MGS for example certainly aren't and there are plenty more). Also not every Japanese game released on the 3DS has seen such a strong surge in sales, in fact fire emblem would have to be close to leading the pack in this regard.

Fair enough the development costs could be applied to any dev but it tends to be a much bigger factor for smaller developers. I just think they would be crazy to abandon the market they have already developed.

What's the main difference between Nintendo's handheld titles and console titles now?

FE Awakening, presentation-wise, looks on par with Radiant Dawn (unlike the GBA and DS Fire Emblems, which had no FMV or voice acting). The latest Zelda on handheld is Ocarina of Time and has proven a "console-ish" design works on 3DS. They can put Super Mario 3D Land, NSMB2, or Paper Mario on Wii U and nobody would question it unless it's purely about graphics.

[PSP] Summon Night 4 (11 d)- 50,000

Well with Nintendo's home console finally being HD and with the gamepad interface, which while similar to the 3ds touchscreen can do things that the 3ds can't, its up to Nintendo to differentiate its console and handheld products. My home is that Nintendo will make Wii U games that feel uniquely designed for the hardware beyond being HD and can't be replicated on the 3ds.

They got pumped out annually around the GBA days, nowdays every 1.5 years there seems to be a Fire Emblem game released (The DLC on Awakening helps some fans get over the wait, which is good for Intelligent Systems I guess).

I wouldn't be surprised if we found out some more info about a new one around Feb/March next year, 3DS seems the best console for the series for now due to the demand it got from Awakening.
