GTA V GameInformer Discussion (11/8, 12PM EST)

People always stretch the truth when talking about map size because who can honestly track it? Besides when people read that they think of nothing but landmass, but this includes the ocean floor and skybox, stuff that doesn't contribute to the appearance of size to the naked eye. So when people get the game there will probably be some bitching that the map doesn't look bigger.
There will always be people who go in with unrealistic expectations, but I think Rockstar have a pretty good track record of not over-blowing their map size claims and delivering on what they say.

Driver San Francisco + Heat + Breaking Bad + Grand Theft Auto + Red Dead Redemption =

The direction Rockstar is taking GTA V is astounding, I've always wanted god tier TV drama like The Sopranos or Breaking Bad in game form, it looks like GTA V is going to be The Sopranos for videogames.

Three perspectives that can be vied any time is downright magical. Rockstar really is betting it all on GTA V and it looks like it's going to pay off.

That would be great, but I would be really surprised if they were able to pull off that level of engrossing drama in something that still needs to be wrapped around core gameplay which is 10+ years old at this point. GTA IV's story was pretty pathetic, especially in light of some of the "Oscar-worthy" accolades.

I was wondering about this myself, did neither GI nor R* release any screenshots?

They are currently exclusive to GI, they have no interest in releasing them.
They'll probably be released on the 12th, when the international previews go live.

I really enjoyed IV's story but that's a different discussion.

What I meant by my comment was both character/dialog quality and the way content is viewed/played by the player. The Sopranos has fantastic characters and dialog but how the show is shot and how ideas are conveyed is what The Sopranos does best.

The three protagonist idea with instant swapping is very abstract and strange for GTA and games in general, Rockstar could've played it very safe but they're taking a huge risk and from what we're hearing it's going to pay off beautifully.

The idea of three protagonists doesn't seem revolutionary to me. It could just end up being the same as the last few GTA games, but changing perspectives every once in a while. If they use that structure to create a story that wouldn't be possible with a single protagonist, that would be a step forward, but I don't have a lot of faith that they will do that. GTA just feels really stale to me at this point. This will be the first main GTA game in ten years that I seriously doubt I will buy on day one.

Yeah, I'm not invested in the GTA stories or mythos at all. To give you an idea of how little I care about writing in my open world games, I loved Saint's Row 3 (dialog was pretty great, though).

I'm going to be playing this for the world and the variety of gameplay. As long as this has side missions that aren't dull or one step above window dressing and a world I can get lost in, I'm gonna be playing this for a while. A passable storyline would just be icing on the cake.

Combined? Impossible. I thought something like that is impossible on current gen. Maybe we'll see PS4 and 720 versions next year? I dunno.

I don't know you guys, but I'm waiting for splitscreen campaign announcement.
Yeah, I am bound for disappointment

Agreed. I don't know how anybody could play gta4 and think it had a really strong story. I'd argue that the story was the weakest of all of the modern gtas. Boring at its best moments and incoherent, rambling at its worst.

How did RDR's map size compare to San Andreas? I have a hard time comparing the two because of the differences in map traversal, draw distance, and size/density of urban areas between them.

I think they're including all of the assets they have had to generate in that comment.
You have to consider "size" not just in terms of length and width but in height and depth as well.

San Andreas was a vast map, for example, but one that was pretty flat and simplistic.

I think GTAV is probably about the size of RDR but more complex.

thinking on rdr... I really don't think that it was that big. But because you were navigating on a much slower & more manual horse, and because regions were so aesthetically dumistinct, it felt cavernous.

Not sure how you came with your conclusion. Only limitation preventing a world the size of RDR, GTA4, & GTA:SA combined would be storage, which we know is not a limitation on the PS3's bluray and can be solved with multiple discs on the X360.

With a map this big, changes to the gameplay (shooting, driving) that hopefully takes the best from RDR and Max Payne 3...oooh boy, this could be an awesome game. Just add the craziness of TBOGT and it'll be the game of the forever.

Edit : it would be awesome to be able ride horses in the countryside and town too, lol.

I'm really curious how they will do it on the 360. Microsoft don't allow mandatory installs. But at the same time I cannot imagine R* making a game where you have to swap discs just moving across the map. Maybe the game world on one disc and then cutscenes, mission data, multiplayer etc. on other disc(s)?

I see it like this:

Install all three discs and you're never prompted to change discs, you'll play from disc one.

or

After finishing a long set of missions/completing an Act from the story, put in a new disc to keep continuing.

Halo 4 has a mandatory install for multiplayer.

To be honest, I'm slightly annoyed as when GTAV comes out, my 20GB (12 GB really) will be left in the dust and I'll have to switch games each time I want to play it. I have the old console. I don't even know how much it would cost for a larger hard drive and then a transfer kit.

Good question, I have the same difficulty. I think Tuna on Toast checked stats rolling over to measure how long a mile was in the GTA games, maybe someone has done the same on RDR.

Well the 120gb HD are cheap nowadays.

I think much of the disc space will be due to stuff like audio. If there are multiple discs, count on it being like LA Noire, with the whole map available on every disc, and swapping is based on mission progress.

However, radio stations much a large chunk of the audio. Is R* going to split the radio stations between discs?

Could be something like that yeah. Well, I'll be playing on PS3 but I'm just really curious how they'll do it for the 360.

Did to me. What wasn't tight about it?

I think those diamonds. I liked the story but it felt really disjointed. It's been some time but the whole thing centers around the diamonds on the ship that Nico come over on. They are in the beginning, then it doesn't show up until you meet Ray and then it's the reason Bulgurin (name?) comes to America. It didn't feel like a great, tight arc but more of the adventures of Nico that were losely tied to this stash of loot. Maybe I'm just not remembering all of the tight connection.

I would not be surprised if this comes on 3 disks for the 360 and if that happens I am getting it for the PS3. There is no way in the world I am switching the entire time. Not to mention the terrible audio compression that will happen for its radio stations.

A lot of story elements in GTA IV are either misunderstood or people don't see how the gameplay contributes to the story. The biggest misconception is Niko is trying to be a good guy and yet him and the player keep murdering and causing chaos.

Truth is though Niko says many times that he feels empty inside, that he's apathetic to what he's doing in Liberty City, and the gameplay reflects that. Running over a bunch of people on the sidewalk won't make Niko burst out in tears, he says a quick quip and moves on. You can go into a burgershot and gun down everyone inside and Niko won't care. His persona and spirit are wounded and tainted, if they wern't his perspective wouldn't matter, nor would him or the player be able to role play as a deranged sociopath.

The activities and what you could do and not do with money was realistic and fits perfectly with the thematic theme. What can an illegal immigrant whose ex military and involved in organized crime do and buy in America? What can a criminal do and buy in America? The answer is simple, empty and mindless activities or products to make you forget how terrible your life is.

Here are the most important things in Liberty City for a criminal:

Guns and better guns
Fast cars
Fast food

Being a criminal in Liberty City is very simple, but the cost of the empty criminal American life will always be negative and scarring. Niko got enough material wealth to buy anything, due to his motives and lifestyle though all that money will be used for empty or destructive things.

For whatever reason though some people don't try to interpret videogames, when you try to think deeper though the experience becomes much richer.

This also applies to Vice City Stories. Vic didn't want to get involved in the life of crime. This isn't the first time R* has done this.

I think people are getting a little too over dramatic over how many disks the 360 version could use.

I'm going to say it will be 1 disk to play the game with maybe a second disk for supplemental stuff. No big deal imo and no disk swapping back and forth. We had this same silly discussion in early threads for GTA:IV with the infamous Wollan and his insistence that the 360 version would make us swap disks at each toll booth lol.

R* use in engine for cutscenes so I not expecting HD video and I'm betting it will mostly be audio taking up space on the disk.

People are making me paranoid about it. I don't mind switching disks for story based stuff like Max Payne 3. I just don't want to switch disks to do different side missions.

Niko is there to find who he considers traitors in his former military group.

What if you can install all the disks and you have the option to play of just the one disk. Would that make you feel better?

The bitching on GTAForums is a bit ridiculous (as expected) but i gotta admit, i'm a bit surprised by the absence of buyable properties.

I can understand the technical limitations of the fat/thin thing, with this level of graphical fidelity, but the properties were a thing everybody loved and that could've been character specific (if they didn't want Trevor owning a villa in Beverly Hills).
I'm really curious how they can handle the economy otherwise, because it's not like there are many ways to do that.
And yeah, looking forward to the previews on the 12th, because the GI is incredibly lacking on crucial info.

All I want to do is play off one disk. Whether it actually be one disk or install and play off one disk. Fine. As long as I don't have to change disks to explore or do side missions. I doubt they would do that anyway.

This article gives a good detailed summary of the GI.

Ugh don't give this guys site the hits. For anyone who's been in that games journalism thread on here you'll know that David Scammell is the BF of the infamous Lauren Wainwright. Videogamer.com is part of the 'problem'.

How did RDR's map size compare to San Andreas? I have a hard time comparing the two because of the differences in map traversal, draw distance, and size/density of urban areas between them.

I've read claims that RDR is as small as 8 square miles to as big as 30 square miles. I don't know what to believe. I wish I had a copy of it to figure it out.

On an unrelated note...

How will it work with 3 characters if you're in a mission and the one you're playing as is about to die and you know you can't escape, so you switch to a new guy? Will the first guy die or will he magically get healthy?

I hope the vehicle controls are similar to the PS2 games , GTA4's vehicle controls were to tight for my liking.

We were discussing this earlier. Let me find the quote I typed out.

What makes you think that?

Racing games pride themselves on semi realistic handling.

Also the rest of that quote.

"We're able to run a little more physics on them. It feels more like a racing game. There are not a lot of high level racing games out there at the moment. And that itch is going to be scratched by this game..."

That doesn't sound like arcade style handling to me.

I can't wait for this game. I don't really even play games much anymore but this one I have to. I haven't played MP3, but the gunplay in that game looks fucking slick as hell. If its the same in GTAV....oh boy.

After playing the GTA 3 series on the original Xbox, it looks like they went with that type of control scheme for the HD series.
