Dark Souls does borrow very heavily from real-life European architecture in some places, though. That is maybe a more valid criticism.

Well, I personally think that referencing awesome, real-life medieval architecture is the opposite of a criticisable act, but to each their own.

I don't really care, but it's a lot more than referencing, and I can see how people might have a problem with straight up replicating shit.

Lost Izalith was also based on a real-life location but I don't have the picture on hand. I'm sure that lots of other areas were directly influenced by real places as well.

I actually love the idea of being inspired by (and even closely replicating) interesting real-life locations. Unsurprisingly, you usually end up with levels that feel much more real that way, as opposed to just letting artists/level designers go wild (of course that also has its place).

MAKE A GOOD ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both Demon's and Dark end horribly. It makes all the hard work feel pointless to me. Demon's also suffered from a joke of a final boss,
What do you mean suffered. It was the whole point. The last enemy wasn't supposed to be the super awesome boss. But show what would eventually happen to you if you choose to betray the maiden in black and serve the old one. And there is nothing wrong with that.

Right. LotR certainly wasn't the first place I saw mention of a hobbit, so I'm sure things were inspired by Berzerk to that extent. It's just kind of silly to say that From "stole" that content from Berzerk, when the examples provided obviously didn't originate from Berzerk either.

Wow, it's pretty much a carbon copy. It would be freaky as hell to walk around in there.

plus, false king was brutal. theres your "last boss"
just think of the stuff afterwards as a playable ending

lost izalith to me is very clearly based on angkor wat (or similar temple ruins of southeastern asia).

I don't really see that to be honest,

and just an FYI, only the biggest temple there is Angkor Wat (the first one you posted), the whole area with all the other temples is simply called Angkor, I forget what the second temple you posted is called :)

Really? I totally see it.

The stairs from Lost Fragment's post are scarily similar.

No kidding. If I walked into that place and didn't know what I was going to see beforehand, I believe I'd spend about 5 seconds wondering if I had gone crazy from playing too much Dark Souls.

Well, clearly a lot of imagery from Berserk is inspired by the middle ages.

But if you're such a hugely influential (seminal!) work of dark fantasy in Japan, it's tough to say where the inspiration for following works ultimately comes from, most likely a little from column A and a little from column B. Clearly, every member of the Dark Souls art team knows Berserk, but of course they've also researched into that kind of imagery on their own.

Those roots are a dead giveaway.

Izalith would've been cool if the whole thing was more of the inner temple and not the outer dinoleg lavaland. And the boss.

oh lost fragments post is fantastic, its obviously modeled based on that place in the game, which I think is awesome!

and maybe I just don't see it because Anor londo is pretty much exactly the same, so it set the bar so high..

yah, I get what you're saying, I can see the inspiration, its just not as close as the other ones pictured, man if they took inspiration from Angkor there is one temple that would have been amazing(the Bayon):

all those faces could have been real creepy

That tune that plays when you first see Anor Londo, the BAUM BAUM, just played in my head when I saw the first picture.

These pics are freaking me out. I mean obviously they didn't make it up on their own but I had no idea how direct they were in replicating it.

Far Cry 3 has some of these Temple ruins that are similar to Angkor and others in the larger ASEAN region.

I assure you, Blighttown and the lava pit in Lost Izalith are completely their own creations.

The announcement of this makes me really want to go back to demon's souls. I never finished it and granted it technically got a spiritual successor and a sequel in the same generation means I should get back to it. I didn't have the time to get back to it when Starhawk came out.

As I was saying From Software has tons of things they can use for DaS2. They have other RPGs too but I'm too lazy to list them. The obvious ones are King's Field and Shadow Tower games.

The main character in the trailer. Which class do you think he his? So far it has only been "knights" as the cover guy, but this one look more like a warrior type.

With all the dragon stuff on his helmet, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Dragonslayer class this time around.

It actually used to be great; one of the best popular manga around, in fact.

It started becoming worse and worse over time and now it's almost unrecognizable (and simply bad).

It's certainly more mainstream now, but I would not say it's bad or unrecognizable. I read the entire thing up to like 33rd volume in a couple of weeks, and never felt it had any huge changes. It's just more PG-13 these days with far less monster rape.

Ok. But I would.
I'm not even just saying it declined over time (and it did).
I'm specifically suggesting that -even ignoring its peaks- for what it is now I find it genuinely terrible, with very few redeemable moments.
Almost embarrassing to read, sometimes.

cambodian temples are pretty common inspirations throughout media. ankor wat is the most famous, but the city of angkor thom (of which bayon, posted above is part) and the temple ta prohm (i think that pic with the trees growing around the stone door is from here, but its been years since i was there) are used pretty often as well.

This one i didn't even think existed in real life.

I've been there, and it's one of the most amazing manmade things I've ever seen. Looks like a UFO with a city on top of it just landed on a flood plain. Once you're in the town, you feel like you're in Gondor or Helm's Deep.

I think after Dark Souls I'd be somewhat afraid to walk around either place.

As for Berserk: for whatever it's worth one of the movies came to the US recently, but I still haven't gotten around to watching it even though I pre-ordered it. Did rent most of the original TV series, but that stops at a key point and I think because of the events of that key point Blockbuster opted not to carry the last DVD.
