When did the NDS surpassed the PS2 in sales worldwide?

Sorry to ask, I've tried to search for the information here, but found nothing.

These days, some... Nintendo blogs... are reporting numbers from LOLchartz. They are saying the DS surpassed the PS2 saleswise.

I know that there's a pretty good chance the DS has already surpassed the PS2, but I want to know when. Can anyone confirm the information? Thanks.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
IIRC, officially DS hasn't surpassed PS2 in worlwide sales. And probably it'll never surpass it due to lack of sustained sales in Latin America and other countries like PS2.

But after all, who cares since both DS and PS2 sold 150 millions. Seriously, who cares. XD

It did in Japan years and years ago but not sure on worlwide as the PS2 is now sold in third world countries where as the DS is not. It would be better to look at a region by region breakdown.

THE WORDS! They'll drift away without the _!
I don't think we have total PS2 sales at the point, since Sony started combining PS2 and 3 sales on their quarterly reports.

Wiki has DS at 152 (Sept) and PS2 at 155 (March). Sourcing from quarterly reports.

Not yet, but it is coming close (Though as a poster already mentioned, there is still demand for the PS2).

Nintendo DS - 152.5 million as of September 30th, 2012:

That's as official as it's going to get. The DS has yet to surpass the PS2.

Is there an accurate site I can check out, that complies systems sold data in an easy to navigate fashion? I'm curious about older systems and hold they sold throughout their terms.

In their last quarterly release, Nintendo only forecasted 2.5M DS sales for the entire year, Worldwide, which would put them at 154M as of March 2013, versus PS2s last known figure of 155.1M as of March 2012. Unless Nintendo exceeded their forecast signficantly, it hasn't...and quite possibly never will.

Its amazing how much the ps2 sold after ps3 launch. Almost every other system is dead when a successor launches (n64, xbox, gamecube, wii).

Sony continued to support it with games like Singstar, annual sport releases, etc. PS2 sells very well in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia, which Nintendo won't even touch. Lol, in Poland, market of 40mln people, Nintendo still doesn't have official presence, and Microsoft only took over X360 distribution 2-3 years ago, whereas Sony was already localizing PS2 games in Polish circa 2003-2004. My guess is the situation is the same in many markets - they might not be much, but added together they give Sony nice chunk of profit.

It also got good stream of PSP+Wii ports and even some bigger names even after next gen had started.

No the DS has not overtaken the PS2.

For the record this is an article that originated from Lolchartz and since then the owner of Lolchartz has come forward and admitted that Lolchartz hasn't updated their PS2 numbers in over a year and one of the Lolchartz 'esteemed' writers did not know this fact and wrote an article based on these out of date numbers and compared them to the DS's latest up to date numbers saying the DS was now ahead. Lolchartz indeed.

Reggie said in a recent Wii U interview that Latin America was becoming his 2nd largest market, behind USA, in the Americas

About iQue...

It's practically impossible to track down exact sales data from how many "iQue DS"s have been sold. I assume, from a FY 2007 Q&A Iwata posted on the Nintendo investors site, that it's because iQue hardware sales don't contribute enough to Nintendo's bottom line:

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/071026qa/04.html

Iwata: ... However, we are not able to comment on how fast we would be able to create a certain size of market there. iQue has come to a stage where it can earn profits from its business, but it has not contributed greatly to Nintendo’s sales and profits. In the long run, we would like to tackle that market. However, as I have said repeatedly today, the point in the end is how we can increase the total number of people who are willing to try video games. Since China has a great population and its economy is growing with incredible speed, there must be huge potential. However, we do not think we can be successful if we simply start selling what we are selling somewhere else. We will need to plan with people in China on how we together can grow the local software market.

The obvious logic behind this is the RAMPANT piracy in China. I visited China a few years ago, and the sheer amount of piracy there is astounding.

Stores in China—ones that sold nothing but pirated videos, games, and music—held official licenses at malls. And everything was dirt cheap, too. Piracy is so fundamentally nested in Chinese shopping habits that it's understandable why Nintendo might have a difficult time pushing licensed products in the region.

Basically, I'm saying that the amount of "iQue DS"s sold in the region probably don't add up to a substantial amount...certainly not enough to overtake the PS2.

But thats pretty much due to official consoles being banned :p Up until like this year you could not buy a legit PS3/X360 in mainland china. Sony just got a sales permit like 2 months ago.

I was just in Shanghai couple weeks ago and you can buy legit games at big stores. The fake markets of course still sell piracy products(most of them dont even work)

I bought a legit copy of CODBlops2D for the Vita and Most Wanted for the PS3.

Hahaha, is this true? Hilarious, and these people want to be taken seriously...

It will be fascinating to see if another system ever takes off the way both PS2 and DS did. They truly are phenomenal systems unlike any other.

With PS2, it was more a case of inevitability. No-one was jumping in for Dreamcast. Everyone waited for PS2. No-one waited for GC or XBox. In 2001, PS2 had an immense year with GTA3, Gran Turismo 3, Devil May Cry, Jak and Daxter and it was all uphill from there. It remained (remains) viable even today.

With DS, it was ridiculed the moment it was announced. It got off to a slow start. Then Brain Training, Nintendogs, Mario Kart and NSMB essentially sold 20-30m copies each and it became probably the fastest selling system ever. Out of nowhere, with no expectations outside the Nintendo faithful, it went on to have one of the most insanely in depth libraries and redefined portable gaming the same way PS2 did for the home console.

I really hope we get another system like these two. I don't care who makes it, so long as it comes. It's essential for the growth of the medium.

So that's why the original article that the blogs are reporting can't be found there anymore...

The guy behind the website that publishes these numbers said years ago(when Aaron greenberg laughed at them) that they're just estimates.

Yep the idea that it was is based on a ******** article. I honestly don't think the DS will as Nintendo is slowly beginning to discontinue it. Of course if things continue as they are in the US sales there will do the work for them.

Don't think any handheld will ever reach DS' numbers. And I'm 100% certain that no console will EVER reach Ps2's numbers, or come even close.

Truly the sales behemoths of the gaming industry.

Depends on region. DS passed PS2 sales years ago. Not sure about the US.
