Borrowing a Wii for 6 months: what are the must-plays?

Back home for the holidays and the family's Wii has been sitting idle for quite a long time. I ask if I could take it away until I'm home again in half a year, and nobody seems to mind, so I've got a Wii... temporarily.

What games should I play if I want to get the most out of it? I'm not interested in online play or anything like that; I just want to sample some of the stuff that the Wii has that other consoles don't.

So far I have Wii Fit, Wii Sports, and The Last Story (snagged that one during the Amazon $8 sale a month or so ago). I'd love to play Xenoblade if the price is right.

Any other recommendations?

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2: Two of the best best 3D platformers ever created

Donkey Kong Country Returns: one of the best 2D platformers ever made

  • Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
  • DKC Returns
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • The Last Story
  • Skyward Sword
  • No More Heroes 1 & 2
  • Metroid Prime 3
  • A Boy and His Blob
  • Wario Land: Shake It!
  • Warioware: Smooth Moves
  • Boom Blox: Bash Party
  • House of the Dead: Overkill
  • Zack & Wiki: The Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
  • Excitebots
  • Super Paper Mario
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • Sin & Punishment 2: Star Successor
  • Muramasa - The Demon Blade
  • Rhythm Heaven Fever
  • Fluidity (Wiiware)

Besides the obvious choices I'd recommend Fire Emblem and Trauma Team. You could also give Fragile Dreams a try. If importing is an option (though you probably wouldn't want to install homebrew on a borrowed Wii), I highly recommend Another Code R and the two Fatal Frame games.

Almost all Nintendo first party.

Pretty much. Galaxy 1+2, NSMB Wii, Zelda: TP and SS, Metroid Prime 3 (or Trilogy if you can find it), Super Paper Mario (if only for Otaku lizard), Xenoblade, DKCR, SSB: Brawl, and almost anything else that I'm missing. I can safely recommend you pass on Animal Crossing: City Folk, however, if you've played prior games.

If I'm only going to play one Mario game, would Super Mario Galaxy be the winner? Paper Mario?

Loved the DKC soundtracks on the SNES, so I might go for DKC Returns.

I like Zelda games, but not Skyward Sword. As a left-hander, I refuse to play a game in which Link is turned into one of them. (Is there another Zelda Wii game?)

I'll see if I can find the Metroid Prime trilogy. I played Prime briefly on the Gamecube but couldn't get good at it and found myself missing the 2D Metroids. (That and F-Zero GX were the only games I played on the Cube, but it's still worth keeping around just because F-Zero is that good.)

Forgot to mention: this is a North American Wii, but I'll be taking it to Japan with me. So I'm going to be picking up some American games for it before going back to Japan later this month.

Xenoblade and Monster Hunter Tri are the absolute must plays. Monster Hunter Tri may not be for everyone, but if it interests you, there is no substitute. Fantastic game.

The Super Mario Galaxies and DKCR are both worth checking out as well.

The following games kick all sorts of ass.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories
Little King's Story
World of Goo (wiiware)
My life as King (wiiware)
The Bit Trip games (retail or wiiware)

Most disappointing wii games I own, but am constantly told are great by people on the internet.

Mad World
No More Heroes
Zak and Wiki

Eh as a Wii launch owner I can't say there's much.

Twilight Princess
Skyward Sword
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Super Mario Galaxy 1-2
Resident Evil 4

That's about all I can say, (and I haven't got around to playing some of those, I just know they are fantastic).

As someone who grew up with Nintendo I was immensely disappointed by the Wii, and even more disappointed with the WiiU.

I do enjoy my 3DS though!

Hard not to agree with this.

If he is actually buying these games (instead of renting or borrowing) then Super Mario Galaxy is $19.99 MSRP, with frequent sales. Galaxy 2 is mostly full price where I am.

I would recommend:

Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Xenoblade
Monster Hunter Tri

New Super Mario Bros Wii and Mario Kart Wii are also fun if you have roommate or other people to play with.

Tenkaichi 3. It's one of the best games you could possibly get, and the best fighter on the Wii in my opinion. I'd suggest playing with a classic controller, but it uses all controller types. Really a great game with tons of characters.

Xenoblade is down to $49.99 new at the-shop-everyone-loves-to-hate; I thought it was more:

Think I'l stop by and grab that! Good soundtrack, FF12-like gameplay (yes!)... what's not to like?

if having good music and more FF12 in your life is the main selling point for you, then Xenoblade is going to blow you away.
i went into it hoping for those same things, and i was fully satisfied and more

edit: i'll also echo the recommendations for RH Fever and NMH 1+2
especially if you're getting Xenoblade, since those three games are smaller scale/more casual and Xenoblade will take up over one hundred hours most likely.

oh yeah, and Sin & Punishment 2, if you're into rail shooters

Monster Hunter Tri
Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
Rhythm Heaven
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Red Steel 2 (you need motion plus)
Muramasa

I borrowed a Wii for 4 days so that I could marathon Skyward Sword. Truthfully, I only think Skyward Sword and the Galaxy games are MUST plays.

Don't play Metroid Prime 3 unless you want a bad Halo game.

Worst advice I've ever seen on this board.

As for the OP, the Mario Galaxy games, Xenoblade Chronicles, Punch-out!!, Wario Land: Shake It, Sonic Colors, and Kirby Return to Dreamland are my "must plays."

You basically listed the 5 must-have Wii games for all Wii-owners. Yeah, they are utterly fantastic and highly recommended. How have you not gotten around to playing them? If they're so good, you should want to play them right away. Strange that you can recommend them without having the inkling to play them yourself.

I'm sorry to hear that the Wii disappointed you, but man, Nintendo's first party alone made the Wii worthwhile. There are way more games than just "Mario, Metroid, and Zelda."

As for recommendations, if you want a "relaxing" platformer that's extremely light on difficulty but full of charm, go for Kirby's Epic Yarn. The game looks great going by Wii standards due to the art style, and you can get it really cheap (under $20 at many retailers; I got mine for $8 at Best Buy). A great choice for "winding down."

Do you have access to the internet at all? There are probably some solid choices for downloadable games on WiiWare or even VC (if you're interested in the classics).

If you look around, there are other Wii advice thread, btw I can recommend you among the others:

Sin and punishment 2
Xenoblade
Mario galaxies
Monster hunter tri
Goldeneye
Little king's story
No more heroes
Mad world
Metroid prime trilogy
the two Zeldas

I surely have missed something.

Must play 6 months might not be enough but still

  • Oboro Muramasa ( don't stop you've seen all the endings )
  • Xenoblade
  • Mario galaxy 1
  • Sonic Colors
  • Metroid Prime Trilogy

If you can't find mario galaxy 1 , pick 2 .

Honorables pick if you're bored
-Zelda skyward sword
-zelda twilight princess
-Super smash bros brawl

My top picks:

Super Mario Galaxy 1&2
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
