I'm still surprised Nintendo is letting this happen, especially after their claim of "learning" from the 3DS launch.

They had a 2D Mario and another first party game out for launch. They had literally nothing for the 3DS launch (or for many months after that). Obviously it still wasn't enough.

I actually don't think Nintendo will have much difficulty picking up momentum for it in the long run in Japan. I'd see this less as a referendum on the device and more as an indication of the new normal there regarding expensive home consoles, and I therefore predict the PS4 will look even worse at launch, possibly a whole lot worse. In any case, with such a dominance over the handheld market, I'm sure they'll be albe to slowly carry some of that success over to the Wii U once the price lowers a bit, particularly if they can market it correctly as a kind of portable / console hybrid.

I don't know, I really don't. Will all consoles do these numbers in Japan from now on? Its the first console so in my opinion its too early to tell.

Makes sense that Nintendo has made an office combining console and handheld hardware research though. If I was Nintendo I would look for a way to combine console and handheld gaming asap.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I'm starting to think that having a Mario didn't really help. It's not a system seller, but a game that keeps people around. They needed that killer game that people simply had to have. Since they recently released a Mario for the 3DS did anyone really need the Wii U version right now?

At this point, I think a 3D Mario at launch would have been much, MUCH better: attracting equally casual and core, perfect for a launch, when core will be probably most of the customers.

Obviously this is incredibly premature, but I also think PS4 is most likely going to not launch well in Japan. Frankly I think the PS3 could continue to be relevant fro a software perspective for quite a while.

It really seems like Nintendo is in no hurry to get sales.

To me, it seems it must be in preparation for the battle this fall with the new consoles. I'd imagine a lineup way stronger than the launch lineup.

Perhaps they wanted to save it for E3, to announce with the new consoles, but now they'll let a little out beforehand? Maybe they'll just wait until E3 anyways?

Didn't Iwata learn anything from the 3DS launch fiasco?

Well yeah, he did. Have a shitty launch and let it bomb, then recover it to the point where it dominates everything.

Hell, it worked with the DS too. Maybe it's the "new strategy". :lol

It would make sense if the PS4 was in the same spectre of power as the Wii U... if anything, it is important for Nintendo to convince people to buy a Wii U BEFORE the other consoles are announced.

That seems like the most likely option.

NINTENDO NEEDS AN EPIC E3 LAUNCH LINEUP, because it's going to be likely going up against the 720 AND the PS4.

So until then, the game releases will be pretty spartan. I expect to see a new Zelda, Monolith's new game, Retro's new game, among others at E3.

As great an overall effort NSMBU was, I think Nintendo was shown in quite brutal fashion that NSMB games are ones which sell incredibly well to system owners. But they aren't system sellers.

The thing is, when some people like me were arguing that New Mario Bros isn't a system seller, and that it had pretty much two lucky sucess, on nds and wii, by arriving just at the time everyone was buying the console...

This and the really hard Wii version probably calm down mainstream nostalgia, and they just released an other version on 3ds... How to kill the momentum of a franchise in 3 lessons, bravo Nintendo.

Not everything, but this definitely. I called it month ago.
If you appear so bullish in about every Nintendo thread you're bound to get something "right". A broken clock...

OT, I expected a drop to 30k, but this is even worse. I have no idea what Nintendo's up to right now but man, I wish I could have a word with Iwata now.

NSMB2 probably had a bigger negative impact on NSMBU than Nintendo expected.

I agree with this. I mean, 3DS players are getting tons of Mario at the moment. Even having the game extended with DLC and all that. Why did they need to release another Mario so close to the 3DS one? They could have waited a few more months for NSMB U. My feeling, though, is that it was quick and cheap to put together so they ran with it.

Nintendo Direct Express incoming :p
But seriously, even if Nintendo announces a few surprise games that won't change anything until said games start hitting the shelves. So yeah, I think we should expect to see Wii U low numbers like these until something good is released for it.

Who actually watches this though? A handfull of people on the internet? That isn't who Nintendo should be selling this too.

He learned that a new console should launch with with a mario title, he just didn't learn the other important lesson he should have learned, too many mario releases so close together with little changed in terms of presentation just makes people tired of mario.

In hindsight I do think Nintendo really miscalculated 2D Mario ( as did I). If you just look at the numbers, there is no better software to launch with. Looking beyond the numbers, I don't think it resonated with early adopters.

That's the thing I don't understand about Nintendo Direct. You're not going to reach a broad demographic with that. I'm not saying E3 is that much better for it, though.

The funny thing that I actually believed Wii U was going to sell tremendously well thanks to New Super Mario Bros Wii U, mostly because I had been two times awfully wrong about the appeal of it in DS and Wii. I was tired of betting against it.

Some really rough months ahead, I wonder how low it will go.

Why bother releasing the console to languish on store shelves, then? Why not delay it until the hardware is ready to go and the games are releasable, and then sell it at a price that severely undercuts the two new competitors?
The early release was obviously planned to build mindshare before the competition can get a foot in the door, but right now the Wii U is just generating negative publicity that's going to be very hard to shake off in the future.

lucky success !?
Come on we are talking about 25M+ sellers there...

Also, the NSMB games have proven to have lasting appeal, similar to Mario Kart.

It would be very easy for Nintendo to just bundle NSMBU at some point.

Personally, I want Mario Kart to be shown, with proper DLC this time. Downloading old favorites would make me pay some good money on that game.

1.6 millions of views for a 45 minutes Direct just on Animal Crossing is a handful, yeah!

It was a little expected given the way launch panned out, obviously a large drop out of the holiday season was in order since nothing has changed software-wise since then.

I think Nintendo knows they can start slow though, PS4 isn't even announced yet and it may be another 6 months until it is. Their priority is to get some games and then by April re-evaluate and see what they need to do. Up-front price is a lot so it's probably going to take a while (1 year+) to hit a stride.

We had Wave Race. Also I was still a kid back then, I didn't notice that shit. That said, times have changed.

No one is saying Wii U won't have good games, but we're talking about the sales of the system.

IMO, Nintendo is the one company who can get away with weird launches that borderline antagonize their launch window customers.

I bought my PS3 in the summer of 2007, anticipating SOCOM coming out that fall. Disappointment turned to anger, and anger to regret. I ended up buying two games for that system that I couldn't get anywhere else and thoroughly enjoyed - Demon's Souls, and Valkyria Chronicles. Everything else was overhyped garbage (WOWHAWK!) or simply not compelling enough to justify my purchase of that console. I will never buy another Sony console due to how they mismanaged that system, as well as the Vita, Move, and literally everything else they have shat out there in the last decade.

With Nintendo, there will never be any such compunction. They have brought heat with every system they've ever produced, so regardless of how Wii U is selling now, it is going to end up with a library of truly AAA games that will endure.

That's the funny (and sad) thing. Like when Reggie was saying "i don't get it, hardcore fan should be happy we have HD and pikmin".

That's like Miyamoto saying "a next gen FZERo waaaa ? really does anyone care ?"

Nintendo is so fucking clueless about everything a gamer is right now... They better pray for a wii fit u bang, but i don't see it happening as the WiiU, unfortunatly is really badly designed for casuals..

I expected the WiiU to drop to ~20k at the end of january. And I expected it to overtake VIta's LTD by the end of february. But I don't think it'll happen at this rate.

Early in a console's life the idea is to sell to dedicated gamers who are willing to pay a premium for the newest hardware and who will consistently buy software over time. That's exactly who will be interested in Nintendo Direct.
