Updates:

JXDS7300 is already on the market, some reviews:

Brief review on Digital Foundry: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-hardware-jxd-s7300-review
Very complete spanish review: http://manguiro.blogspot.com.es/2013/02/review-video-consolatablet-jxds7300b.html
French review: http://www.open-consoles-news.com/2013/02/test-de-la-jxd-s7300b-offerte-par.html

You can watch the device in action with different games and emulators here:

Gaf members hands on impressions starts at post 148 of this thread.

A view of the inside of the device:

This it the place to go for more information and progress on customization of the device's software:

Specially check this thread for custom firmwares:

http://boards.dingoonity.org/android-devices/jxd-s7300-fixes-firmware-roms-thread/

The very simple and fast resume would be that the device has a quite good design and quality for its price, but some software problems (analog control driver implementation, OS stability...) that may or not be fixed in the future by official or community based firmware updates.

Original Story:

Today i have been doing some research on Android Handhelds, apparently the new Archos Gamepad has some big flaws according to some early user reviews, so my interest is now going towards these two new JXD devices.

The 5" one is a prototype only right now, the 7" is coming to the market on the last week of january.

JXD is a chinese manufacture that has been releasing cheap android handhelds over the past couple of years:

http://www.willgoo.com/jxd-handhelds-c-67-page1.html

But these new models, that will launch next January are more interesting on theory because:

*More buttons, Double Analog, 4 shoulder bumpers.
*More powerfull SOC: Double Core, 1GB RAM, Mali400MP2... should be enough for good emulation of consoles up to the psx.

We will obviously have to wait till reviews to know the important stuff: battery, quality of the controls, quality of the screen (not ips apparently) and all that, but they are looking pretty promising.

Any interested on Gaf for this kind of device beside the Chinese Ripoff Joke?

This actually doesn't look bad, specs are pretty decent but my big question is can it access google play? I know there are people that love these and like the challenge of rooting the device but to me it seems like too much of a pain in the ass.
If it's cheap enough I might give it a shot just for kicks.

I wish these companies would opt for OLED, 1080p/720p, and attempt to be port monsters for retro titles (SNES, Genesis etc.)

it says in the images posted that it has "simulator games" and lists emulated systems. don't know which emulators it uses, but with those specs, old systems should run fine

How do they get away with the Nintendo patented dpad?

I have seen some videos on youtube of their older handhelds, and they are including within the stock software collection games from Nintendo, Sega, Capcom etc.

As mentioned before, China doesn't care.

No idea, they are showing the market on the promotional screens, but yeah, who knows.

I'm going to explode. Why is it that the manufacturer of a 'cheap knockoff' product can figure this out yet we're stuck with antiquated legacy controllers. That configuration is basically EXACTLY what I was asking for out of a minimal update to mainstream controllers.

FUCK

What flaws are other users speaking of? I bought an Archos GamePad yesterday and must say, as far as I tried it, I am pretty satisfied. The mapping software works flawlessly and every emulator I tried (I bought it for emulation only) was either mappable (full dual stick analog support) or recognised the hardware keys without a problem. Everything up to PS1 and N64 ran at fullspeed with all settings on max. There is an slightly annoying lag sometimes, when you change back to the desktop and in certain applications (e.g. firefox), but as I didn't experienced these lags in any emulator, I don't really care.

Isnt there something gba sized? Its still to big for a portable

I really want a small and powerfull portable, but small, something that I could easy shove into my jeans.

Apparently, they have been able to solve the worst problems of the machine with the last firmware update, before that, the device had issues like:

*Slowdowns of the system while using the sticks
*Button Overlapping problems

According to what i am reading, there is still the problem with the sd card:

*Slowdowns when using sd card

But, i guess they will be able to fix that too.

With all that, the worst problems would be fixed. Some negative points will be still there though:

Poor battery life.
Bad dpad design.
Overall quality and position of the controls

But, i guess for the price is not that bad of an alternative, i still hope this new JXD devices could be better, but we will have to wait a little more.

If you type "5 inches in cm" in Google it'll calculate it out for you. Google can understand stuff like this, it's pretty handy!

That being said it's 12.7 cm.

Thnks :-) So its 12.7cm diagonal? Im gonna try and calculate the size of that thing

Just ordered the white S7300. There is a rumor that it will be shipping next week, so I upgraded to 3-7 day shipping. I may be crazy..

A vertical resolution of 480 on the S5600A/B is quite attractive. That means GBA games at perfect 3x scaling, PSX and earlier at 2x.

That looks amazing... If major companies like Samsung could release something like this and it takes off... Then wow...

Ugh, the inverted positions of the ABXY buttons would drive me nuts.

I'm not sure why the 360 layout is the opposite of DS layout.
