[Eurogamer\DF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation.

That's me saying that GDDR5 was greatly needed.

And looking at what crippled GT5, it's easy to see why.

Yeah you can definitely see it with GT5. Do you guys remember that interview with PD where they asked why they were modeling the cars at a level of detail not possible in game and they said something like "so we don't have to model them again" presuming they can use those for PS4 shouldn't we have a much quicker turn around time with GT6

Does anyone know if there is a way to create 3D images for free/cheap (without performance hit), and if such a technology could be used in the PS4? I tried 3D a couple of times on the PS3, and I really, really hated the reduced details/resolution/framerate...

One thing that's especially nice about specs like these is how there are several big improvements that'll be able to go into next gen games with barely any performance hit. It should be able to take 16x AF with almost no performance hit, tessellation is on it's own part of the GPU and will be pretty solid if it's a 2013 tessellator, and a good post process AA like SMAA will cost essentially nothing (although I'd like to see it combined with a bit of MSAA).

Crysis 2 has it, and obviously does not look like 3D at all. There may be some optimizations, but in general you do have to render two complete frames. That being said, I'd be perfectly happy with 60hz 2D/30hz 3D next gen.

So all the latest rumors are pointing to this?

You see this folks... this is lame. Lame is not a word I use often. People like this can be satisfied with a giant button that says "Games".

Yep, the premium models are indeed future proof. I'm pretty confident with the assets they have now, they can package an A-Spec game in time for the PS4 launch. Most likely launch window. If not, I would settle for another Prologue. ;)

don't think for a second that 3.5GB of GDDR5 is enough for gt6. it's too little

At a baseline it's enough for:

Eliminating environment pop in
Holding a 60fps framerate more
Handling more copious amounts of transparency effects, high resolution this time.

well I don't want baseline. for once sony needs to fix ram issue they usually have.

After Wii U I'd be really surprised if Sony didn't go with PS4.

they must go with PS4. that there by itself is great marketing already. People who don't follow gaming will go "O PS4 is out, cool". Otherwise it will end up like Vita. There are people still thinking PSP2 is going to get released soon. My older brother who has been gaming for 20 years, but doesn't follow gaming news, doesn't read sites...had no idea what Vita is, or that it is a PSP successor.

Everything other then PS4 is a disaster, which is what is going to happen because Sony likes to shoot themselves in the foot.

Now if Sony was willing to invest 100s of millions of USD (like MS) to reeducate people, than they could take a risk with a new name.

Let's get to 60FPS and 1080p before we think about anything else

As I said in another thread, nobody claiming a developer for these consoles would make a statement akin to "it may be true that kinect might ship with the Xbox" (the info is already privvy to developers). Nor would they say to expect 1080p/60fps across the board (simply not going to happen). These are dead giveaways.

Well, I had no idea that the PS4's GPU would be more powerfull then the Durangos.

It says that right in the Digital Foundry article. As it is, there is no conclusive proof towards this, though.

Digital Foundry said:
At this time we cannot confirm the make-up of the Durango graphics hardware - rumours have circulated for quite some time that it is some way behind Orbis, but equally there has been the suggestion that the GPU itself is supplemented by additional task-specific hardware.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Just a note, Sony spent a lot on Cell research for PS2 BC and PSX BC, some that never came the PS3 ( we all thought PS2 BC was fully coming back but never did, and we got stuck with DL only PS2 games but we had that before those patents showed up )
So wouldn't adding Cell enable BC with All previous PlayStations, including PSN games?
Just curious

With all the praise that MS received due to getting the lead on better performing multi-plats, do people really believe that they will let Sony get that one over hem next gen?
MS have invested two console gens in stopping Sony taking over he living room and there is no way they are going to blow it now. I still think there is something exciting we don't know about nextbox yet.

Why they let every other companies walk over them, they only care bout the money, not who has a better product

Yes but they know how important third party games are and also performance sells. Look at surface rt and pro.
Nextbox will be a big part of their strategy and they need it to work more than anything. I still think nextbox will be more powerful.

If the two consoles are specced as closely as suggested I don't think it matters. Games will be 95 percent the same with only a couple mine differences here and there.

Exactly, I know how flak kinect gets but if it is far more accurate with the ability to track fingers and not just hands it could become a lot more useful without realising it.
I still think kinect won't be packed in.

so even he doesn't know what "secret load" is in both of them. Judging by that article there are a couple of secret things in Orbis, probably in Durant as well...

Uh. Well, lets put it this way: even the Wii u had "secret sauce" ( including an audio dsp)

If they only cared about money, they wouldn't have specced the Xbox 1 so high over the PS2.
Well they had to make a splash now didn't they, my point is if they think the specs are high enough they ain't gonna jump just because of a higher spec rival, I can safely say MS will do a lot of impressing with its consoles OS & software even on a slightly lower spec machine, and they'll run with that instead
@Marco
You said it yourself, things like that is what MS is bothered about

That being said, I do expect the 720 to go toe to toe with PS4

You know what would be nice? If Sony added 2 more gigs to that supposed 4GB DDR5. Make it 6GB of DDR5 and I'll be there even at $599.
I know I know...

With both consoles launching the same time and most likely with he exact same multi-plats then it won't be long to see which is the more powerful or easiest for third party devs to get access to the power.
I agree with above that if the difference is tiny then MS may impress more with BC and more media capabilities. That huge OS RAM reserve has to be for something exciting surely.

Why? Would you rather have a HD 7870 with 4GB GDDR5 or an HD 7970 with 2GB GDDR5?
The investment needs to be placed in that which provides significant gains not marginal ones

Do you guys think Sony's first party studios were highly involved in designing the hardware? Would this be the first time?

I still feel something is not right, all the games(e3) where on 680 for a reason.

Yes, for the reason of wowing you with their graphical spectacle. Seek out Oblivion's trailers from E3 2005 and then compare it to the 360 version released one year later. You'll see all manners of effects and detail that never made it to the final version. They're demonstrating the game on a high-end card to get you hyped.

Meh, if the PS4 fails (which I hope it won't) to impress then I'll simply get a XB3 for next gen. After all, it's apparently blessed by "secret sauce" aka "wizard's jizz".

It just boggles my mind that they didn't go for a more powerful CPU. This article guesstimates that power consumption for the entire system would be around 150W. I remember people were afraid that about Sony and MS crossing their old limits in wattage but this is quite below that. Are they trying to mimic the WiiU in terms of saving on power? Or are they trying to keep Californian governor happy? Are they trying to keep women/girlfriends happy by being quiet during gameplay (only a handful will get this reference, XD)? And pertaining to the GPU, it looks like they could have increased the core clock to at least 850MHz (if not more) and the entire system's consumption would still be below 180W, let alone first PS3's 210W at peak. Would reaching 200W have meant substantial no. of YLOD and Red rings (or their next gen equivalents)?

Feels like this shrinkage is slap in the face of opportunity to increase power without doing something utterly revolutionary. I am hoping to be proven wrong but what good is infallible reliability in a machine/s whose specs may be perceived as underwhelming?

These systems in contention are 8-12X more powerful than PS3 and Xbox 360. You will see a visual improvement that shall blow you away. Stop being pedantic and worried. This is the beginning of a new generation, it's time to hype .
