Gabe: Singleplayer games are like a film where your lead actor is retarded & autistic

lol at the PC brigade in this thread, how is this offensive?

He used the words autistic, boo fucking hoo. I'm autistic myself, yet I use my weakness as a chance for growth. I don't want the pity of these people, I just want to be treated as another person.

This is the full talk:

He also talks of interesting things with the perspective of the business, I recommend to watch it. It's very interesting that the idea of organizating Valve like came long before creating it, and the whole idea about capturing productive people instead of subcontracting cheap resources.

The retard and autistic thing is not aproppiate, but he was talking too casually I guess (not like a conference, more like talking in a bar)

Also, can I point out, that we believe it suddenly morally offensive for gabe to say "retarded, autistic..." while simultaneously glorifying shit like this:

Nirolak, it seems like you chose the thread title to ignite the userbase. You wrote that you would like to provoke an interesting discussion about how SP games work but nothing in OP provokes this discussion because Gabe talks about how they collect feedback from MP games and that's all. Nothing about how SP games are structured.

That's it unless I misunderstood your intent.

Sorry, I updated my part of the OP since I realized I cut out some sections for length.

But yes I also think his phrasing here is a valid debate/criticism point.

He said that player-driven characters often appear autistic, or retarded. This is not untrue, and I'm not sure how it's offensive. The entire medium is a bastion of autism. Not sure why it's offensive to acknowledge this. He never explicitly states that it's a horrible thing, just something that makes for an odd disconnect between player and avatar.

Poor choice of words.

But you know what annoys me more? When middle class yuppies get whipped into a frenzy about how racist or offensive something is, and go on and on about it. Reddit is calling.

OMG at the income of some of these guys. Who made 500,000 in one year? What was he selling? Clearly I have a defective imagination, because I still can't imagine how this was done.

I know, but I don't know if he'd want it public.

He lives in a country that didn't allow for payments every month, so he gets one huge payment every year. This person just makes a lot of hats.

I was wondering what Valve's cut is.

Don't quite see the big deal. It might not be politically corect to say it that way, but he's right that protagonists in "interactive cutscenes" behave very strangely. Half Life or Portal might be loved for their atmosphere or stories, but characters who jump around all the time and never say a word wouldn't fly as relatable in any other form of media.

I really didn't understand the point Gabe was trying to make until he got to the fact that user-created content can make lots of money. That much, we know to be true.

This statement is not gonna make anyone happy though, and it really doesn't even make a lot of sense.

He could've worded it better but I'm not gonna pretend to be shocked and appalled. I've seen plenty of people on here use the word retarded.

I think its horrible that the word is used. US culture towards it imo is willful blindness.
Anyway its not actually his wording, that just makes him crass and a bit ugly - its what hes using them to describe thats very derogatory and extremely unsympathetic.

He shouldn't be talking like this, and it worries me that he feels no pressure to be more mindful; as am afraid people will defend him (not saying your defending him btw; but I do think saying other users use it isn't much of an excuse - I've called people on it here before).

Cry me a river. This is a pretty spot on description of how it feels to be Gordon Freeman/Link.

"What's that Lassie? The princess has been captured and aliens are taking over the world?" Fank ooo for elping me underspanned.

The issue here is not the sentiment, (he has a good point) but the word choice. As an executive of a company such as Valve, he needs to know better than to talk like that.

Rainman made a lot of money too.

But... he's not using it in a derogatory manner. Gordon Freeman actually appears as if he may have mental retardation.

Oh i see people can't use sick people problems to describe that subject ? Come on. Words don't make people sick nor they have anything to do with people problems.

I watched his full interview and it was v good.

Valve's whole anti-single player stance lately has me comfortably thinking I won't be interested in much they're doing in the future. At least Portal was great.

I started falling out of love with Valve (to the point where I try to buy all my Steamworks games from other retailers) back in 2008, when I emailed them asking why Left 4 Dead only had about four hours of single-player content (each mission was ~50 minutes long at the level I was playing). The response?

Something along the lines of:

"Well, we really want you to play it as a multiplayer game, but come on, there's a lot of variation in Left 4 Dead! Sometimes, health packs and hordes spawn in different locations!"

I don't like nor care about multiplayer gaming, and I'm becoming increasingly frustrated that Valve seems to look down on it.

That's not how a CEO should be talking, really. Act like a respectful adult in the public domain.

In this day and age of words making you look insensitive/ignorant, it's mindboggling that people in the limelight and high positions keep spewing them out.

Stupid comments, stupid because of the consequences.

All around stupid.

Gordon Freeman is a totally mute character in a film-like narrative who wanders around rooms aimlessly and hurls barrels at people while they're trying to talk to him.

Just sayin'.

Neogaf is basically the political correctness capital of the internet, so most members here get bent out of shape when words like that are used.

Rather than grow thicker skin, people here expect everyone to conform to their own sensibilities.

For people offended by his usage of the word retarded in this context, please, whatever you do, stay away from behavioral psychology literature, studies, offices, etc. You will be inflamed!

Poor choice of words for that one sentence, but I don't disagree with the sentiment. A lot of single player games that try to be all about story and immersion are hampered by the kinds of heuristic problems that Valve has been oh-so-good at addressing with the Half-Life series.

Man Gabe is awesome for being the head of Valve and giving us great games at a lower price with Steam but he could work a bit on his speeches.

Hating on the PS3 when it came out, now this and then the windows 8 which I actually agree with him but I don't think he will be right on that either.
