SCEA hires new advertising agency

If these are the same people that did the Sprite ads in the UK - the ones with the goblins in them - they are in good hands.

I hope if they create a good avert SCEE uses it and vice versa.

Seems like a waste of money both wings of the company make completely different adverts for everything. I dont think any other game company does that.

It happens for some products in Europe and i'm sure the UK has had it's fair share of american Sony ads but there is a flavour that each region has that your marketing will be aimed at.

I'd hope they would use any good advert from any of their regions in the other ones. I like seeing a different perspective on things. Keeps the world fresh but companies have to decide whether a global advert vs a local one would garner more sales. In TV especially. I'm sure the media outlets all use Press Packs and such.

Did the creepy UK Sony adverts escape europe to America?

Butler was a terrible misstep and SCEA marketing became too focused on something that wouldn't sell products. You might have enjoyed them, but it was just more of Sony making themselves look weird.

He only worked for the already converted. It wasn't aimed at anyone else and was thus a massive waste of money.

I hate Axe commercials, but they ARE pretty damn effective at getting recognised, people making jokes about the Axe effect and all, so they're good at what they're doing. I have never seen a Chrome ad and I don't care to look them up, but it has to be better than what they've been doing so far.

Thank God. About fucking time. Now we wait to see if its actually a good agency. GOW and The Last of Us will be good indicators for this new agency.

The New York Agency in particular has made some of the best ads around. The Google one posted in the OP, plus the Google Chrome vs Potato one and more. Fine pick Sony, fine pick.

Good for them, especially as they are about to enter the next generation. It'll be nice to see what quirky things the new firm can come up with.
So Sony should go back marketing a gaming console as a gaming console is all that ad told me.

But I thought we were supposed to be a pit of negativity!

To echo everyone else: good move, they clearly needed a change.

this is actually very good news. I happened to see one of those chrome browser ads a few days ago. very well done and more importantly, it was eye catching and made you pay attention.

sony are seemingly firing on all cylinders at last. I would say about time, but this is something that should have happened some time ago.

This sounds like a huge step up. All the best Sony. If you can keep delivering great content like you did for PS3... I hope you take the lead once more.

At this point in the Playstation brand's life, I think Sony could benefit from appealing to nostalgia, and the brand's heritage and history. Or would that be a bad thing in this new age of smart phones and tablets?

Saw gofreak post about this in the PS meeting thread and with all the talk about Sly getting no marketing I thought it deserved its own thread.

Here's some of their previous work for other clients:
Axe - Susan Glenn
Google - Dear Sophie
Sprite - Camouflage

And here's the old Michael ad from Deutsh for those who don't remember it.

That's a good pick. Those guys are solid.

The Micheal campaign was good though, their problem was halfheartedly chaining it to Playstation allstars. Can't remember if Bartle is the same dudes that did the Kevin Butler stuff, Sony was dumb for not continuing that campaign, it was the best video game marketing drive they ever had...until they introduced the kid.

helped a brotha out on multiple separate occasions!

Deutch was behind the Butler ads. IIRC, they got the account sometime in 08 after TBWA's "Universe of Entertainment" (Venom) ad.

I used to love the PS2 commercials, the sound effect before the actual commercial was brilliant. I would hear it and run into the room to see the new game being advertised knowing it was a PS2 title.
I remember playing PoP on the PS2 then seeing a GOW commercial for the first time, my jaw hit the floor. Those were the good old days.
