What is Life is Magic?
Life is Magic is a location based RPG for iOS and Android that turns real world locations into fantasy playgrounds full of fun, mystery, battles, and loot!
What makes it unique?
It's a location based RPG which has been done before. What sets Life is Magic apart is the overlay their own map drawing on top of what appears to be a 3d google like map. So instead of it just looking like your normal 3d Google Map it looks like a fantasy map found in Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones!
How does this map thing work exactly and will it work for me?
The developer Red Robot said the map overlay is complicated, and no it won't work across the globe YET. I stress yet as they plan on supporting everywhere. As of now most all of North America is done, and I know they just recently launched in Canada within the last week or so. I'm not sure about EurAsia yet.
What cool things does this mean?
It means the bank you shop at is the Bank of America that's near you at the time of playing, or the resturant you hit up is your local Chinese takeout. I buy my armor from a local sporting good store right by my house! One cool perk is if I wait and buy my gear at the shop by my house when I'm home because it's my home place and I have influence around these parts in the game I get a 10% discount!
It also means you hit up dungeons near you on the world map, and that in the main hub cities like Miami or San Fran or Atlanta there is a uber dungeon Tower to eventually try and conquer. If you do you get your name up there as having completed it! Plus you can get tolkens in the game that allow you to teleport to other major cities. So West Coasters can travel East and East Coasters West!
What is the gameplay like?
You have a character that you chose from one of 3 classes that is basically a machinist, mage, or monk. You then try and fight through dugeons, gather gold and loot, and progress through to better dungeons while leveling up.
How does the battle system work?
It's completely turn based. You have a main wep and different spells you can cast some of which need spell points which you get by casting certain spells. So you can magic attack, wep attack, or defend. You can also select which enemy you want to attack if their are multiple.
How does looting and leveling work?
Each dungeon has "floors" aka different rooms. You go into a floor and face a badie. You beat the badie it gives you exp, gold, loot etc... afterwards. The catch is you don't get to keep it if you die. So after each battle it asks you if you want to press your luck for another battle or dip out of the dungeon loot in hand.
How bad is the mium in this Freemium title?
It's not to bad actually. Some of the better items and spells can only be bought with crystals, but you can get some by doing quests verses actually paying real money for them. They gate you on what you can do by each dungeon floor costing so many points as are other things like spending points to gain influence on a place. You have a pool of 100, and it refills rather fast. It's definitely more of a couple of hours and it fills back up verses having to wait till the next day. Plus it refills while you play, and you get a full refill each time you level!
I'm still a lowerish level, but so far I haven't felt like this title really has screwed me over yet by not shelling out any cash. Maybe that changes down the line, but so far so good here!
Are there any multiplayer aspects?
Yes there is, but it's not true co-op persay. There are two chat channels to chat in aka near you and global. Also you can invite up to 2 other people to party with you. The catch is they don't actually play with you in real time. They just join your group, and when you go into a dungeon you have them as playable sidekicks by you. It's not true co-op in that you each control your own character. The game is still new though, and maybe that feature gets added in down the line.
Finally how is the difficulty and the grind?
It's definitely not easy persay. They really play on the press your luck thing, and it can sort of get grindy. Thing is because you have only so many points to spend you can't endlessly grind for hours so it breaks up the game a bit. It's also worth noting partying up can be a huge advantage, and really scale down the difficulty level.
