In Gabe's speech they actually said firing was something they were working on...expet a few more in the next months

It doesn't seem like she was anticipating it at all. I'm sure she will find a company that's a better fit for her though as she seems to be very talented in her field.

Did he specifically mention firing people? Letting someone go doesn't have to be a black mark on their career unless the employer in question is being punitive. We can't even guess what she'd be fired for aside from total lazy-ness which seems unlikely. This is as bizarre as G4 firing Sessler.

She must did something crazy bad to be expelled from paradise.

All praise lord gabe.

That seems to be direction of this thread. Valve fire people = good move! At least to some people. Gabe had a speech!

I actually don't know who this is, nor do I really care but it is interesting compared to other developers getting fired.

That's a real shame. Got the chance to talk to her a few times online.

She was always sweet, and of course she's talented as all hell.

I'm sure she'll end up somewhere awesome.

Gabe be praised.
fuck off valve zealots

Interesting.

Valve does not fire people all that often. Normally people just leave before it comes to that.

Wonder what happened? Maybe Valves hardware R&D is hitting some bumps on the road.

There's a pretty big distinction between a large company laying off (not firing) large swaths of employees as part of an exploitative staff up / lay-off down cycle versus a comparatively small company firing employees who don't meet extremely exactly quality standards after a trial period as part of a continuing commitment to staying as small as possible and only hiring people that mesh well with a very specific corporate culture.

All this said with absolutely no awareness of the context of Ms. Ellsworth's hiring, job responsibilities, or firing, but the point stands generally.

This is only interesting because of the fairly unique environment these employees work in, relative to the rest of the industry. I hope we get more details.

This must be how Lucifer felt when he was thrown out of paradise.

As much hiring as they've been doing lately, it's not surprising that they're trimming the fat a bit too. Curious, though, that they're dropping one from the hardware team.

Glad she was fired.

She is a self taught electrical engineer and didn't go to school for it.

While I wouldn't say I was glad she's fired, this points to a possible explanation. Being skilled at hacking projects and being able to design a hardware system from the ground up are two different things, and some systematic knowledge can be useful.

That's probably why she was hired over all the other educated people who sent hundreds of CVs in. Valve values people who do things themselves pretty highly.
I don't have anything against her personally.

Just disappointed that people who pay thousands of dollars for school don't get selected for jobs over those who don't.
Check yo' privilege.

... er. Yes, never mind that she was a genius, she didn't have a degree I could fish out of the trash in a couple years.

What the fuck does that have to do with anything?

Maybe she was lacking in certain skill sets required for the job that get developed during formal education?

Being self taught isn't necessarily bad but people who are self taught probably just learn what's interesting and don't get the breadth of formal education.

If the person who didn't pay thousands of dollars is more knowledgeable and skilled, they should definitely get the job over the person with the degree. After all, they were smart enough to not waste that money, as they didn't need someone else to vouch for them because they were good. After all, that's just what a degree is: A school vouching for you, basically.

Simply paying a lot of money makes you qualified for exactly one thing: Saying you paid that much.
