Media Create Sales: Week 6, 2013 (Feb 04 - Feb 10)

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I won't say Wii U has stabilized, but it looks close. Might hang around 10k or so until late March when things pick up a bit.

The only thing that surprises me this week is animal crossing, WTF man.

People who didn't have the 3DS already waited for DQ VII to come out and bought another title they were interested in. Synergy like this happens all the time with Nintendo's evergreen titles.

Has there ever been as much of a disconnect between Japan and America in hardware sales than it is right now with 3ds doing amazing in Japan and somewhat disappointing in America?

Seeing the graph it will likely cross stream with PS3 by July unless i'm missing some huge title releasing before that
1st party stuff should bump it before then. Nothing singularly huge except maybe Wii Fit U, but enough stuff in general to reverse the current slow crawl to 10k.

The numbers outside of the top 2 are abhorrent. When you can make the top 20 with 4k sales, that's saying something.

Well, there's few new releases this week, no-one really wanted to go up against DQ (who can blame 'em?!). If there were lots of new releases I'd hope we'd see a lot more of the top ones in the five-figure bracket.

Saturn, N64, tons of failed efforts in Europe.

Did this really happen?

Of course - more than that. Its sales were positively poor for a while.

What baffled me was when professional analysts back then predicted it wouldn't recover even when it started picking up steam and MH3G++ was right around the corner. A weird time.

Those MC threads when we doubted the 3DS' potential seem like a lifetime away now...

Since you've mentioned it, I recall there was somebody arguing that Nintendo should have ditched 3DS altogether and launch another handheld, when not suggesting they should have gone third-party.

But Saturn was never that huge. I'm not even sure it has one million seller. Videogame was pretty dead at that time in Japan, before the PS took the crowd with big rpgs.

Saturn did way better in Japan and was ahead of the very disappointing N64. N64 crushed the Saturn in the US on the strength of its multiplayer games and was a very distant second to the PSX while Saturn was dead on arrival.

That 3DS top 5. AC went up? Shit son.
DQVII release => HW bump => popular titles bump

BTW why there are people still surprised at WiiU decline? How is it supposed to get higher without any new release? It's not like people will magically "notice" the WiiU is out now and rush into the shops to buy it :p

Mario Kart 7 will cross Media Create 2 million in a few weeks time, we need an update of that "Race To 2 Million" animated gif!

Is Fantasy Life Level 5's first big success in a while? They seemed to have disappointing results throughout the last year.

Yeah, Japan was producing Saturn games a couple of years after the Dreamcast launched too.

I do remember that lol. People were way too quick to write the 3DS off considering the titles that we knew were on the way.

Vita sales need to pick up this year for the sake of competition in the dedicated handheld market. Sony really need to bring something over the next few months.

I think it is safe to assume it already had based on Nintendo quarterly report.

Yeah, it's way over 3 million.

Nintendo said on their fiscal year presentation 3 weeks ago it had sold 700k download copies. If you add that to the 2.5 million physical only number by Media Create, it's 3.2 million (not including the last few weeks of download sales).

Competition? They abandoned the competition ship quite a few million 3DS sales ago. All Sony can do now about Vita is damage control. Its supposed competitor sells 10 times more, there's no contest and there won't be any until next year to say the least, when 3DS will probably be at 17/18 millions.

I don't think it would do much in terms of competition tho, at least in the handheld space, Nintendo will always be Nintendo. I guess things like the PSP and the (at the time) upcoming Vita, meant that Nintendo have Monster Hunter on lock down? But that only benefited Nintendo.

I mean with home consoles its 2 against one, so Nintendo are forced to improve, it looks bad if they don't. But with handhelds? Nintendo can just keep to their laurels, for better or worse
(better for me)
. I'd like to see your response cos I'm, sure I'm missing something that you could enlighten me on (not joking!)
