Ueda posts about TLG

Sony's enforced radio silence on the project. They can't talk about it because it's on a system that hasn't been announced yet.

The way I see it is the silence was put in place until the game is good and ready to be finished, not showing the game again until they can confidently reveal a concrete release date.

I should also mention that details regarding THE LAST GUARDIAN's release is solely decided by Sony Computer Entertainment, not myself. Please keep an eye out for their official announcement.

This part almost seems like the game is close to being done.

Ya'll need to stop.

It's had a troubled devlopement, but TLG is clearly being released in some form. Everything points to it being shifted to PS4, which would explain why they've been so silent apart from constantly confirming that it still exists.

It's not 'clearly being released'. We know almost nothing about the game, we have never seen a playable build or anything other than concept trailers. It could come out eventually but at the moment all we have is words from a few people at Sony telling us it still exists.

Until we know the most basic facts about the game it's just a fart in the wind.

This part almost seems like the game is close to being done.

Or close to being cancelled. Or staying in development for another 2 years. This game has missed an entire generation, even if it does come out one day there is no way it will be as good as Team ICO's previous games. Games trapped in development hell never are.

And people say that Sony marketing doesn't work! They sell consoles to people on games that don't exist.

'paying for potential'

I can only imagine how miserable and draining it must have been on the whole team for the past decade. I seriously hope the game isn't completely botched.

It's actually unbelievable for a team to go through the longest console generation without actually releasing a game. Sony paid that team salaries for 7 years and they literally have nothing to show for it.

I'm torn between being angry that Sony allowed this disaster to happen, and still being secretly hopeful for a big payoff and another tremendous game by Team Ueda.

More than the game I just want to know WTF actually went wrong. Did Ueda lose it? I mean the guy delivered two defining games last generation the latter of which was extremely taxing on the hardware but still delivered a breath-taking experience.

I still believe in Ueda and wish Sony would just put him back on the team again, would hate to see him end up making IOS or Facebook games. So this gen will go without a Team ICO game, if I remember correctly ICO was going to be a PS1 title but then moved to PS2. I really don't want Team ICO to disappear they are my favourite developer. I just want them to rise like the phoenix next gen; TLG as a PS4 launch/window title and then another one 2-3 years later like the PS2 gen.

Yup...PS4 it is...but I doubt it would be announced on the 20th...probably E3 2013?? I think that the first PS4 reveal will be less games announcements...maybe only 1-3 max + trailer montage.

Oh yeah, there's no way it's not on the PS4 now. Ueda all of a sudden starts talking about the game not too long before the 20th when the new Playstation is supposedly going to be revealed. It makes too much sense. I'm really excited to see how far this game has come, so hopefully we will see something new from it in the next months.

He will. After all, time is nothing for the man who knows the secret of eternal youth.

We're not talking about Sakurai are we?

Same dev time though, so I see the confusion

Seems they were very ambitious as to what they wanted to do with the game, with the AI in particular, and this caused them all the problems.

I really dislike that dude and i bet nothing has even been added to the game since we last saw it.

... And what's so special about it anyway? The animal (whatever it was called) looks good, with the feathers and all the physics but aside from that it's not a good looking game imo. We know nothing about the gameplay and we know nothing about the story, so, it's just a pretty painting in my book.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Presuming its not surprise-releasing in Summer, its a full 8 years come Fall. 8 years as a first party dev failing to support the PSP, PS3, and PSVita in the meantime. Astounding. They should have been completely culled 3 years ago.

I feel that with the release of the HD remakes of his past work, TLG probably lacked the same amount of polish given its ambitious scope and most likely suffered with the feather rendering on a technical level... especially with 3D. This has always been my theory.

Between that, and the newfound praise for the past titles, they needed to rethink their developing techniques to be able to match the hype. Everything seemed to be going smoothly prior to that because they even included imagery and concepts of TLG in the remakes to show what was to come. But soon after, shit hit the fan and we recieved a lot of bad news. Always felt like an awkward transition to me.

Wasn't there a few press events for TLG around then too? I remember that "looking at his creator" meme originating when things were still on good terms and before the HD release.

Wouldn't be the first time they were ambitious, happened with the SoTC too. I personally think they just didn't have a game just an idea like Konami with Rising. The expectations probably overwhelmed them and they didn't see anything as good enough.

The timing of this message is curious. Could it be that we'll be seeing The Last Guardian re-announced at the Playstation Meeting event? Be still my beating heart.

If it has been moved to PS4, I'd be surprised to see it on the 20th. It would steal some of the spotlight from the new hardware, and possibly in a negative way. Even if they could show the most stunning upgraded footage imaginable, I still don't think they should do it.

not really sure how i feel about TLG if it ever gets release.

I didnt want a TLG with fumito as freelancer contributor.
I want a TLG with fumito as the creator.

Sony has not 1 but 3 swan songs for PS3 with GOWA, TLOU and Beyond. I believe TLG would do more good as a PS4 title now.

isn't this just like his last message? all it seems to say is he's still working on TLG as a freelancer and there's still no talk about the actual game. what the fuck is going on when you can sit on your ass for 7 years and have nothing to show for it? if this was any other third party studio they would have been disbanded 5 years ago.

as for the people who keep saying PS4. how do you expect this developer to scrap all their work done on the PS3 hardware and start over? might as well add another 5-6 years to this project seeing as it takes them an entire generation to make a game.

fuck it, I say PS5 launch title.

This sounds like an FF12 situation more and more, sans the getting sick part.

The way he worded that message also sounds like he really isn't all that involved with the game any more, and his role as "freelance supervisor" is just sony saving face. (marketing)

We don't expect them to be scrapping all of their work. We expect an upgraded PS3 port as a PS4 first year title.

EDIT: Well, I don't expect them to.

Wasn't ICO also a troubled PS1 project that moved to PS2?

Yes.

It's possible that every Team Ico game has gone through a difficult development and this is just the first time we've heard so much about it before the game's release.

I want to believe they can get this shit together, but there's also a part of me that is going to laugh/cry when a bunch of people who bought a PS3 for this also buy a PS4 for it and then it turns out to be a big disappointment.
