In my 18 years of gaming, I've never played a Sony system. Could PS4 still be for me?

I'm in a similar boat as the OP. Never owned a Sony console, but I have played/watched a heck of a lot of games on PS1-3 at friends and relatives houses. I think I've always been a PC gamer first and then fell back on Nintendo for consoles. That ended after Gamecube.. so I bought a 360 (well actually won the first one). Now I have a Wii U, but I'll be craving for another nextgen system definitely by the end of next year.

I will have no problems purchasing the PS4 this time if it's the clearcut superior platform.

I don't know if I should feel sorry for the OP or laugh at him. I even feel like abusing him for some reason.

What a sad, sad waste of 18 years.

Huh, this post made me think the exact same thing about you after reading it.

I've played my friend's PS3 a bunch, and I can honestly say 360/pc is more my style. A lot of the ports for the games I played happened to run better on 360 and there aren't enough PS3 exclusives that have interested me for me to bite.

With that said I may go for the PS4 depending; the controller seems to have been changed towards my taste this time around (concave analogues), I really don't want an integrated Kinect, and Halo is no longer a reason for me to buy a system.

If you get a PS4, you'll get access to a sizeable library of PS1 Classics, and soon enough PS2 Classics as well.

There'll be plenty of legacy games to play. I'd almost go as far as to say for someone who never played PS1 or PS2, a PS4 would be worth it for their library alone

its indeed cheaper to get a PS2 standalone and a PS3 slim. the bc PS3s were just the premium model of the launch units and were discontinued very fast.

fast? They were selling them for a year and a half since launch until they stopped. There are quite a few of them.

To do some research. Maybe not even that.
Which ones have good stories and worldbuilding?

Worldbuilding? On a scifi setting? And a first person shooter?

You're being awfully specific.

Just go ahead and say you don't really wanna be interested in Sony devices either way.

Wow, dude. You missed a lot. A LOT. You missed out on several eras of amazing video gaming.

You missed out on the single greatest gaming platform of all time with the PS2, and a damn strong contender for #2 (alongside the SNES) in the PS1. You shouldn't be worried about getting a PS4, you should go get a PS2 on the cheap, play through that MASSIVE backlog, and then when you're feeling pretty good there grab a cheap PS3 and a bunch of the HD collections, new games, and PS1 classics via PSN.

You could literally spend the next 5 years just getting caught up on the PS2 though, and still not scratch the surface. It's the greatest single console of all time, it's library of games is powerful enough to blot out the entire rest of the industry during it's reign. It would take the combined libraries of both the SNES and PS1 to legitimately compete with it. Not having owned one is doing yourself a massive disservice.

Fuck, I can't even give you a legitimate must play list. Not having owned one is like enjoying chocolate but only ever eating a regular milk chocolate Hershey's bar. There's a whole world you've been missing.

Wow, never played a Sony console. Get a PS2, PS3 and PS+. The go to your nearest gamestop and pick up a bunch of PS2 second hand titles, look at metacritic for the best reviewed exclusives.

Like Halo (worldbuilding, forget the gameplay), a lot of effort into worldbuilding, though story quality is uneven...

I have nothing against Sony or their devices (other than the PS controller design, never fit my hands well) but... well, games are more important. I ordered a gaming magazine for many years, reading everything, PC, PS, Xbox, Nintendo. Games i like are rare regardless of platform, but i can't remember any that would have interested me on Sony devices.
That doesn't mean i won't like games i think i don't care for, there have been some that i try and find myself liking them.

EDIT actually, remembered one game: Dust 514. Unfortunately it is coming way too late this gen and from what i've read, it doesn't sound particularly good. Its integration with EVE online interests me much more than the actual game TBH...

EDIT talking about exclusives of course.

Get the fat PS3 from Ebay and you'll save space and time.

Or if you have a decent PC, just get the PS1 and PS2 emulators and play your games on them. The emulators enhance the visuals more than the PS3 could.

Reeeeeeee
Sure why not. They're just videogames. They shouldn't be so important that you need to play everything that's ever existed.

Man, forget about Playstation for a second, from the OP it sounds like you never played a PC game, either? Now there's some history to catch up on.

GAF, my brother (/sister on occasion, probably), my trusted confidant, and my one-stop-shop for gaming advice since 2008... I come to you with an interesting situation I find myself in.

I received a Super Nintendo for Christmas in 1994, and have been gaming ever since. Nintendo was enough to fill my gaming needs until last gen, when it became clear that being a Wii-only owner was excluding me from at least 70% (if not a helluva lot more) of the best the industry was offering. Through the strong endorsements of most of my real life friends, I went with the Xbox 360. And I loved/still do love it (despite hating Microsoft for being a greedy asshole of a company, due to the combination of XLive Gold and me having have had to pay for three 360's due to two red rings.) At this point though, most of Microsoft's first party exclusives are franchises I could live without. Gears, Forza, and Halo are all well-made titles, but after the excessive milking they all went through I feel like I'm ready to FINALLY experience some games that are exclusively Sony's.

But that mindset has just formed recently, after reviewing the leaks from both systems. I was originally completely content to carry my XBL account over to Durango and stay a Microsoft customer, because despite how much the company has screwed me (and you) over, I've still had many quality gaming experiences with the 360. With this no second hand game proposition however, I am firmly out of Microsoft's territory. I mainly play single player games, and many SP titles this gen can be conquered in a weekend. Because of that, at least 60% of the 360 titles I've completed have been rentals, and it would be an incredibly unwise move for me, financially, to invest in Nextbox if rentals are truly to become a thing of the past.

But all I've known for the past 18 years is every Nintendo home-console, plus the 360. I'll save my thoughts on the Wii U for a time later on down the road, but suffice it to say that it definitely won't be the system to suit my needs this-gen until it has at least two or three years of strong first-party support behind it. I threw caution to the wind last gen when I bought a 360 with no previous experience with an Xbox, and it paid off. I'm hoping jumping into the PS4 might do the same.

So, I ask you all... how have Sony systems traditionally compared vs. Microsoft or Nintendo offerings? Does Sony offer an experience that will feel distinctive to me compared to what I got from Microsoft, in the same way the Wii was a MASSIVELY different experience than what I got from the 360 (I doubt it, because both Sony and Microsoft get very similar genres and the same AAA multiplat games)? Is anyone else that was on the 360 train last gen thinking of jumping ship to the PS4 based on the current rumors and speculation?

There is such a huge pull for me to stay with what is familiar... I love the 360 controller, the interface of the machine (despite all of the bullshit ads), the 3rd party offerings that have left me with some of the best experiences in my entire gaming career, and achievements (which for some reason seem better than trophies, though that may not have any empirical weight behind it.) Yet I feel like Orbis may be a better machine for me (in almost every sense) than the Durango, and coupled with the fact that I may be able to both stream PS3 games, and play PS1 and 2 games on PS+, it feels like it might be the much wiser investment.

Obviously I will be watching the conference on the 20th with great intent, but despite what ends up being shown, dropping a substantial amount of money on a company I've had zero experience with before seems like a risky proposition.

I look forward to all of the Kaz gifs that will end up selling me on Orbis in this thread!

I would pick up a PS3 on the cheap when the price inevitably drops, and have some fun with the sony back catalog, then jump into ps4 when it has a significant software library.

Sony+Nintendo is a far better combination than MS+Nintendo IMO. Sony has much more varied 1st party games.

Hey! That's my philosophy :)

I can live without MS games. Sony always has a prime game that I got to play. Nintendo always delivers.

Its a shame, it becomes tough to juggle Sony, Nintendo, and a bit of PC gaming. I know I'd never have time for MS, not that I would want to give them time. Paid subscriptions for access to playing online is why the 360 was the only console I opted out of purchasing. Even when I saw it for dirt cheap on clearances.

This is an incredibly interesting prospect for me. Wii + 360 suited my last-gen needs just fine, though there were several PS3 games I was sad I missed out on. As I said in my original post though, Microsoft Exclusives don't hold that much sway over me anymore, so I'm interested in seeing what Sony can offer.

This is one of the worst commercials (Sony or otherwise) I have ever seen (and I feel like that's saying something). Perhaps it's due to my PR/marketing background, but good lord, please hire me Sony. Despite having literally never played any of your consoles I could do a tremendously better job than literally everything I've ever seen that your advertising department has ever put out.

I don't know if I should feel sorry for the OP or laugh at him. I even feel like abusing him for some reason.

What a sad, sad waste of 18 years.

SO SAD! It was awful for almost two decades playing only Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Smash Brothers, Metroid, Banjo, Donkey Kong, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Bully, Red Dead, Arkham, Soul Caliber, Elder Scrolls, and countless other non-franchise games that I'm too drunk to remember at the moment. This is such a solid argument that has completely sold me on every future Sony endeavor

I find that Sony is a great jump for a Nintendo Fan. Sony is quite a creative company with an excellent, ever-changing lineup of IPs. I grew up on Nintendo, went to Sony for PS2 and then went Wii/PS3. You really aren't going to find the same games anywhere else.

If rumors of the PS4 streaming BC are true, you could pick a few choice titles you missed out on too!

I'm very interested in this. Despite my hatred for Nintendo's ass-backwards company policies, they still have this sense of unquantifiable "charm" and "magic" (sorry Amir0x) that I've never experienced with another company, gaming or otherwise. That's what keeps me coming back. There is this undeniable flair that Nintendo can consistently produce, and it makes the company stand out from the competition, despite an objectively lower number of quality titles and a far-from progressive businesses model.

lol i feel sad for you.

No. You haven't earned the right to play that shit!
OMG LOL, BETTER SWAN DIVE INTO AN ACTIVE VOLCANO TO PAY FOR MY SINS

Since you're not into gaming I would say no, op.

Yet again, OMG LOL! I hate gaming which is why I've spend literally tens of thousands of dollars on the hobby over my lifetime! Time for some hardcore Seppuku to appease to GAF-deities

I can't even wrap my head around the idea.

Get a PS2 especially, that thing is heaven. And look forward to the PS4.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
PS3 would be better bet. Full PS1 support, plenty of PS2 HD collections as well as PS2 classics on the store, and also the pretty fucking large PS3 library across retail and PSN. Its a pity Sony never brought that PS3 PSP emulator into focus either, because then you'd have a fucking insane library to sift through as well.

You're really not missing anything these days. The PS1 and PS2 had a lot of good games. It ended there. I wouldn't waste the money on the PS3 if I were you. Maybe if it still had other OS, then perhaps.

Wow... just... wow.

No good PS3 games?

Wow... just... wow.

1) Buy PS4
2) Stream PS1, PS2 and PS3 library poorly over the internet
3) Wait for PS4 games
4) ????
5) Pr....sell it, buy PS3.

I've played every Sony console, but I only owned a PS2 and PS3. I didn't care all that much for the PS2 because the Xbox catered to my tastes more, and I liked the Gamecube more as well because of Nintendo. I didn't pick up a PS3 until last Summer because 99% of multiplats ran better on the 360, and I figured I'd wait until the PS3 was cheap to reap the exclusives.

So, I guess I could be considered an Xbox guy if you had to label me, but as of right now I'm more excited to see what Sony has. I really think they have learned from their mistakes. I think the multiplats almost have to run at least on par with the Nextbox this time since they're both PC's; I like the gimmicks of the touchpad and Eyepad shit more than the Kinect; and I know Sony is going to push waaaaaay more exclusives out than Microsoft. Not to mention they seem to have fixed all of the issues I had with their mediocre controllers; bigger size, good triggers, better stick (placement) and some cool bonus stuff on it.

Plus, one of the biggest things about consoles is when one of them starts to get hot, it usually tends to stay hot. Sony's marketing seems to be back in full vengeance mode. They're basically saying that Microsoft doesn't give a shit about games, and Nintendo pushes out the same shit every year. Spinned truths of course, but there are kernels of truth in them, and people eat that type of marketing up. So as long as the PS4 comes out first, and is the same price or close to the Nextbox, I think it could be the console that gets the steam first, and builds.

With that said, I'm waiting until I get the full picture on both of the next-gen consoles, but as of right now if I had to pick, I would go with Sony in a second.

The only game on the PSone really worth playing is Metal Gear Solid. And you can beat the game in under 6 hours.

PS2, you can basically get all the "must have" titles on the PS3 in HD. Expect Socom, goddamnit SONY.

PS3 you missed quite a bit. Heavy Rain, MGS4, God of War series, Uncharted 1-3, Little Big Planet, Warhawk, Killzone 2-3. Wasn't too impressed with the Resistance games.

Solution OP: Craigslist a cheap PS3 for $150, get some of the games listed above, enjoy - anticipate the PS4 with the rest of it.

i can't believe some people in this thread.

the op comes out and says "hi guys i want to get in on playstation gaming. never owned one before!"

and instead of educating him on how much awesomeness there is to be had, they'd rather just spend their time implying his gaming taste is retarded for never owning one.

he's trying to get into it NOW.
that's a million times better than not being interested in it at all.

the guy wants to broaden his gaming palette.
you should be giving him a fucking standing ovation, because that's a lot better than what the majority of the 'hardcore gaming community' get up to; whom do nothing more than 'side' with a particular console, entrench their feet, and fling poo at others like a bunch of primates.

He's right, though. While what you list is indeed great, the notion of not ever getting to play Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, the Uncharteds, the Ratchets, the Sly Coopers, Infamous, the Metal Gears, the Suikodens, the Personas, the Yakuzas, the God of Wars, Valkyria Chronicles, Journey, Flower...you've missed so many things that are irreplaceable gaming experiences, at least to me. It's no different from having missed the Zeldas, the Marios, the Halos, the GTAs. If you love the medium, I don't understand the notion of only picking two of three systems. Even systems I find disappointing overall, like the Wii, have games on them I wouldn't trade for anything on another system.

On one hand, you're in for a treat with a lot of what you've missed, but on the other, much of it is either unattainable now (the Suikodens, for example) or ravaged by time (most of the PSone library and some of the PS2's). It's a very temporal medium, and it's hard to go back if you don't have a nostalgic streak for some of the older stuff.

Sir, might i ask you why on earth you couldn't have put a fraction of those dollars on a videogame console that would give you so much?

If i were you my friend i would go out and buy a PS1 just to experience the most important period in videogame history.

As the PS4 is extremely likely to have PS2 BC built in. I say wait and go for it day one.
Not just for the next gen games, but mostly for the extremely large selection of PS1+PS2 games (you can do fine without PS3), by either tracking down some physical copies or digital.
You're in for an amazing treat OP.

Don't buy an OG ps2, it's not produced anymore, and is extremely fragile. The used market is full of busted PS2s, avoid it.
Don't go for a PS3 either, it got a good library, but is severely limited without PS2 BC and considering you own a 360 already.

I think the PS3 was the only time there were exclusives to the system which I wanted to play.

I should really get a PS3, but their still expensive.

The idea of staying with what's familiar console-wise is bizarre to me. The PS1 and PS2 are both in the running for best consoles of all time. Get a PS2 or BC PS3 and play some awesome games.

I dont recc going back to ps1, ps2, because nearly all those great games have been rereleased or improved upon during ps3 gen. Also u can get lots of thr ps1 classics on ps3. If u dont jump onto ps4, I do say get a ps3.

Oh and I would suggest waiting to see if the PS4 is backwards-compatible or what. No sense of buying a PS3 when the next thing is coming out within 6 months or so and can already play that stuff.

Either way, I bought a PS3 solely for the exclusives and Blu-Ray player and I don't regret it.
