PSA: Tomb Raider (PSN-DD version) does not have online-only DRM

You need internet to install, download and use other services like achievements, cloud saving and community, If you going to play offline it's not worth it.

What?

A lot of people like to play games and experience only the game, not all of us need meta features that enhance the experience.

Steam has an Offline Mode. PSN does not.

I can just see Steam sitting their looking mighty smug with its offline mode it took 8 years to get working properly ;)

I'm really not sure why anybody would purchase this digitally at this point, restriction or no restriction?

Interesting, news to me. Still a very small list of games

Yeah, im not saying that people shouldn't be pissed... it's the "it begins" posts that make no sense since it's not beginning now, socom and warhawk were very, very early in the PSN's life and used this exact DRM.

It's referring to the anti-consumer DRM practices that are hinted to be hitting really hard in the upcoming new consoles.

Ah, the good ol' days of having to switch to Offline Mode while online, run the games you wished to play, and then actually go offline to ensure said games would function correctly.

SOCOM and Warhawk were multi-player only games anyway so it didn't matter as much. But like I said, when it's something like Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - a game you're mostly playing alone, then it's unnecessary. And if you ever face the situation where you can't be online, then it's problematic.

It's not used frequently I guess...I already mentioned FF has done it before, I think you can count the number of titles on 1 hand that contain this DRM though. So I'm not surprised that people aren't aware of it

SOCOM Confrontation, Warhawk, Final Fight, Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 I think?

Aren't SOCOM and Warhawk online mp only games?

Whether or not playing offline is "worth it" is entirely up to the individual and completely irrelevant (not all Steam games require you to be online to earn achievements, by the way). I was simply correcting your misunderstanding that Tomb Raider PSN requiring an online connection to even run is identical to Steam.

You are simplifying it a bit.

This is a major tent-pole 3rd party release using this DRM on a single player console game. It's a pretty ballsy step forward and they are obviously testing the waters for future usage. Has Squeenix done this before on consoles or PC?

Two of the key differences are that they came before the console activation limit was changed, were multiplayer focused, and most importantly before the PSN was down for a month, nevermind the fact the PSN tends to have long updates right in the middle of the day so it's kind of a shit platform for requiring online activation every time you play even without that incident undermining them. Even for those games it was kind of garbage, as you couldn't share across accounts on the same system as I recall, meaning for something like this everyone would have to buy their own PSN copy on a shared system.

Not that I plan to get on PSN admittedly, it'll probably be a Steam sale when I get it, but this would stop me from buying any SE console exclusives (likely what Japanese output we'll even see on PS3 before PS4 replaces it) unless they dropped this crap.

Very shitty of SE to do, Tomb Rider is going to sell well either way, no need for this.

Guess that's why you saw like no promotions on PSN that this game was coming day1 like some other games way in advance, I got it coming from Amazon. Good they didn't promo it since I might have picked it up digital to to get another $10 off in that March deal.

fucking wow ...there are no words ...and now i'm officially completely disinterested in buying it as I didn't want a physical copy either

The joke Is this will be very easy to patch out by CFW users.

it's kinda appropriate though. Someone in the OT said this is the game that basically sums up this generation. Can't forget the restrictive DRM.

One big difference between this and PC services (Steam, Origin, etc) is that almost every PC, if not every PC, is connected to the internet 24/7. Client-side problems only arise when the internet is down or you're moving house and don't have internet temporarily.

Consoles are often used offline, taken on trips, to friends houses, away from a decent internet connection. In the case of older Xbox 360s often they are never connected to the internet due to lack of Wifi. Obviously any PS3 with a downloaded PSN game had/has access to the internet, but unlike PCs they are very often used without internet while I'd say PCs are without an internet connection a few hours a year.

My first reaction was, "Is this seriously happening."

Then I remembered the PlayStation Mobile and Monster Radar Plus are also guilty of this. In those cases, at least, you can only use one account at a time, so it doesn't really matter (unless you can't find WiFi to validate the games). PSM is periodic though. (Monster Radar Plus isn't, but that game is kinda bad anyway.)

Piracy, matey. Th' "Fish Breathed Waster!" custom firmware stuff must be th' reason why.

LOLNO. Pirates will just rip the disc based version. This is to combat friends/relatives sharing the game. Apparently the 2 console activation limit and deactivation cool down aren't enough for SE.

That is not really the problem. It is more paying for something that will stop working in the future at the discretion of a company.

Not such a big deal with tomb raider because it is a play and forget kind of game... But if it becomes the norm for things like fighting games, which may be played many years after release it is an issue.

So the PSN ver. can only be played if you're connected to PSN? I don't see what the point of that is for playing single player campaign, really bizarre....

I had no interest in this game anyway, but wow at the account locking. My roommate uses my 360 all the time on her own profile to play games I'd downloaded. I hope this isn't a sigh for things to come.

Where are people living that internet access is so unstable they have to play it in offline mode? Who downloads the game and immediately disables their internet access to play their digital game? Anyway, you can still buy a copy in the store if you don't want the hassle of logging in. Woo options!

PSN just had 10+ hour Maintenance yesterday
Sometimes you can get lucky and sign-in, sometimes not
You have to be signed into PSN before it starts for you to stay signed in

Sometime the system does boot you out for no reason at all with error 8000203 codes

Internet outages do happen...

Comcast in Charleston, SC.

My Internet consistently goes down at least twice a week for periods of time. Comcast is the only available internet in this area.

Yeah, lots of PSN content is like that. In fact most downloadable games are like that.

Umm I have AC3, Deus EX, Batman AC, Mass Effect games digital that I own (not plus)and tons other that let me play on multiple accounts. All the PSN games I own and tried on my other ps3 in the other room works when signed in to a different account. I use that ps3 for friends and relatives to get there own trophies, not messing with mine.

America.

Who says anyone does it "immediately"? But yes, situations arise where an internet connection isn't always available, or when PSN gets hacked for a fucking month.

Thanks. We weren't aware that we could buy the physical version. But maybe we're thinking more long term than you seem to be doing. If this is the digital future, it's not one I wish to participate in.

Steam has never worked offline for me, I didn't have internet for nearly 2 months and steam didn't work because it needed internet.

So its EXACTLY the same thing.

Sometimes playing Offline on the PS3 helps with framerate and load times, I shit you not

I forget which game I was playing, but whenever someone signed into the PSN, I would get a hiccup, then it would jitter back to normal, after the message of said person signed-in appears

I just auto-signed off, and played Offline, no jittery mess to be found

Sometimes the OS can be a fucking burden, or hell the game itself with assed optimization

Stop Bullshitting

I have purchased content where I bought it once, DL'ed it, Installed it on 3 different PS3's (before the 2 activations came into play) and we all played it at the same time
In my house

Me (my room), my brother (his room), my cousin (living room)

There was a time you can game-share up to 4 times the same game to your family or friends
All can play it exactly at the same time to boot!
