When Terrence Howard scored a co-starring role in the original 2008 blockbuster Iron Man, he believed that he was poised to cement his A-list status and potentially gain his own Marvel franchise.

However, in just two short years he was dropped from the film’s sequel and replaced by Oscar nominee Don Cheadle in the part of Lt. Col. James Rhodes (a.k.a. War Machine).

Rumor has it that Howard’s clashes with the filmmakers on the first superhero film led to his departure. While he initially described his exit from the series as amicable, the Dead Man Down star is now saying it ‘killed’ his career, according to Hollywood.com.

According to the website, Howard said: “I chose not to fight back, not to deal with the allegations, but to continue forward and do what I had to do. I had to start all over: went from making $6 million a movie, back to $60 thousand a movie. But as long as you don’t give up you are able … I’ll make $20 million soon. Because I have learned the lessons of yesterday.”

“Marvel and I are now talking about doing some other things. And Don Cheadle wanted to play that part before I wanted to play it, so everything is very well,” he added.

Cheadle is set to reprise the role of Rhodes in Iron Man 3 which opens on May 3rd.

Yeah didn't he get kicked off for demanding a ridiculous amount of cash or something? Dude deserves it.

Really missed him in IM2. I really dug his chemistry with RDJ.

I remember when it was announced they had dropped him years ago and was so pissed haha.

6 mil to 60k. Actors need to learn how to shut their mouths and not ruin a good thing Iron Man wasn't his show. Stay in your lane and don't start bitching about pay for a forthcoming sequel.

The onscreen chemistry with him and RDJ seemed fine and cast changes are so jarring; seeing Cheadle as Rhodes in IM3 still felt off because of it.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
Looking at old articles, it looks like the rumor was that Howard actually made more money than RDJ for the first movie, then when the studio wanted to scale his share back in the second, he and his agent were like "nope".

So they hired Cheadle instead.

I did like him as Rhodes, perhaps even more so than Cheadle, although I definitely prefer Cheadle as an actor.

Marvel was notorious for a while there for lowballing actors though, so maybe he had reason to scoff at their offer. Probably should've taken it regardless, but hindsight is 20/20.

What exactly was Marvel paying its actors? I'm interested now?

Yeah I remember reading that he actually made more than RDJ on the first iron man

Seriously? That seems crazy. RDJ was the lead and fucking brought it. But I guess it makes sense, it must have been an insurance liability or something.

Edit: Though RDJ sticking with it made him crazy-rich. Didn't he get a cut of the profits from The Avengers? I think he stands to get a $50 mil payday or something.

See this article. Pretty decent summary of how Marvel handed out shit offers to Sam Jackson and Mickey Rourke before eventually signing in. Sounds similar to the Terrence Howard situation, except he didn't get much of a chance to negotiate since Marvel probably wanted Cheadle to replace him anyway.

In regards to the second part, you have to consider that pre-Iron Man RDJ wasn't nearly the hot commodity he is now. That movie is what really reestablished him.

You don't remember RDJ's career before Iron-Man? It really revitalized his career.

1. Howard made more than RDJ for the first Iron Man film. RDJ was being kept on a tight leash because studios were worried he would relapse back to drug use.

2. Marvel decided to cut Howard's pay for Iron Man 2 while giving RDJ a substantial increase plus back end gross percentage.

3. Howard beat his wife.

4. Howard defended Chris Brown after he beat Rihanna.

Basically, Howard is an asshole, but his dealings with Marvel were not really a matter of greed.

Thanks for the link. Interesting stuff.

Yeah, I know RDJ's career was at a low point before Iron Man (maybe not the lowest point, since he did get sober and was getting good work again).

How did RDJ get hired for Iron Man? God, that was a stroke of genius.

Not sure, but RDJ's real life struggles are a good parallel to comics Tony Stark, so maybe that played a part.
