In reality, it makes sense. His position's been in jeopardy pretty much since he's been hired, with rumors peaking a year or two ago that he was about to be let go. EA was making a LOT more money prior to 2006 than they are now (though, come to think of it, that's pretty much the entire generation).
Personally, I think being evil might be catching up to them, but, of course, they're going to blame Riccitello for the poor performance of Dead Space 3, Bulletstorm, Dante's Inferno, The Old Republic, and Syndicate, as well as the poor public reaction to SimCity. Pretty sure they should be blaming Bioware for inventing project $10, DICE for browser-Battlefield, Bulletstorm's marketing/stupid design, and the guy who won't approve online-only games.
