Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

PLEASE tell me the mass market won't stand for this. I know the informed gamer won't, but I can't imagine what kind of message this would send if Durango does well regardless (unless of course there's stuff that makes up for it).

If the PS4 was always online GAF would be defending the fuck out of it. How about we actually wait until we know a little more about the console before shitting on it?
Look who's coming out of the woodwork! You got some appropriate responses deservedly;
One hell of an argument....
It would be the same thing lol
As much as Sony has won me over this gen I can guarantee that there is no way I would be defending this kind of bullshit.
Yes, gaf is a Sony love-fest.

Were you around from 2006-2008?
But it's not. And I doubt "GAF" would be defending it. All we have to go on right now is information sources give to media outlets. Expect a reaction to that information.
Dat persecution complex.
GAF does love their Sony but come the fuck on.

Sony was shat on when the PS3 launched, they were shat on during the PSN debacle and Vita is shat on every day.

Holy fucking shit. They're really doing it.

My thoughts exactly.

The guy tends to complain about things that get attention. He was ranting for a few tweets about "What's the big deal with DuckTales? Who wants to play old games?".

He's that guy.

"People will move to better homes and better neighborhoods with better internet connections in order to buy the new xbox."

I don't mind always online, but I had to get in on the fun just a little. :)

This dude is a nobody looking for some attention.

Probably a new hire or a fake account.

Take this thing with a grain of salt...

Oh wait, this is Neogaf; where everyone jumps to conclusions!

Okay, here is the thing GAF....all of you are going to buy xbox when the next Halo comes out. They have probably done their calculations and they are fine with loosing some folks due to always online. They definitely make a lot of money with Xbox live and they want only those people who are going to pay for live and buy stuff online. That is their business model and I am willing to bet it's going to be more successful then Sony's model.

But as a consumer I really like PS4's model, at least what they have shown of it and also I am Playstation guy! But I would wager that come Christmas time, new Xbox out sells PS4 2 to 1, even with all the online crap! (in North America)

I own a 360 and didn't buy Halo 4. So no. Maybe if Bungie was making it

I think word would quickly get out, especially if coupled with anti used games if that ends up being true as well.

The market will stand for it, and pretty much everyone here will cave and Microsoft wins. It is inevitable.

Just a curious thought here. I know dedicated gamers like GAF members and others who browse all gaming news are offended by this since we are in the know. But what abut the ignorant masses who don't know wtf DRM, always-online and such mean? They might still gobble up the Durango and Microsoft might spin the "always-connected" feature to be a massive benefit.

Questions for defenders:

-Why do I need to have my internet on to load a single player game?
-Why should I get kicked out of playing a single player game if my internet kicks out for some arbitrary amount of time?
-Why would I pay for Xbox Live if I have to be online all the time anyway?
-Are they tracking my usage/targeting ads at me by being online? Can I opt-out?
-Why should I be disadvantaged by an arbitrary decision because the area I live in experiences sometimes patchy internet? Electronic devices require electricity to run. Only a few types of games actually require internet connections to run.

And so on.

One is offensive and elitist. The other is Kamiya. I think I know which one I can handle.

And when Kamiya tells people to go fuck off, its often justified. If you ask him sensible and interesting questions, he gives you pretty neat answers.

I have no idea what this guy is doing. At the end of the day, he's doing an Arthur Gies where he's saying shit and doubling down, making everything he's associated with look bad.

MS is getting very "second job"-ish here. I wonder how much they'll pay me if I can find Nextboxes on shelves a week after launch.

Even better, now you have the opportunity to pick up and move if you want to experience next gen pay walls!

If this turns out to be true, I can't wait for the inevitable train wreck of a launch.

Sony can have an incredible marketing campaign if they attack Microsoft on this.
They should roll out some PS4 commercials for the opening weekend of baseball season and the Final Four.

"This fall Sony will bring to you the next-generation in hi-definition video games featuring all of the franchises you know and love. <show clips> And unlike the other guys, you won't need to be connected to the Internet to enjoy them.

Because when your Internet goes down, so do your games. <game footage switches to black screen and frustrated gamer looking upset>

PLAY ANYTIME.
PLAY ANYWHERE.
PLAY ONLINE.
PLAY OFFLINE.
PLAYSTATION.

<PS4 logo>"

I just wonder how Microsoft will sell this as a good feature....no used as well.

People don;t give a shit about piracy so "it stops piracy yo" doesn't move units.

I am always connected so this technically doesn't bother me. My internet is shit but when it goes down I normally try to fix it first lol. That being said not being able to play at all is garbage especially for games that aren't online.

I just hope Sony sticks to what they said because man next gen seems shit.

The sad part is that this won't effect aything...people will still buy it and get fucked and be okay with that.

People only complain after the fact and by then they will justify it with "bu-but it's better".

meh

They just need to unveil this shit already and let the rumors stop. Damn near all of them have been awful

Diablo 3 did alright, and Starcraft II.

He's that guy.

Is he the "oh just give em another Halo or Gears" at meetings because that's how I imagine their meetings to go with Phil Spencer just nodding his head

I...don't think its that easy.

REAL LIFE CONVERSATION I HAVE HAD WITH REAL PEOPLE (to the best of my memory)

Me: "So, you heard about the next Xbox?"
Him: "No, what's it like? Any good?"
Me: "Well, no official details yet, but all signs are pointing to bad things. Seems like it'll block used games."
Him: "What are those?"
Me: "Like, pre-owned games. You know, second-hand. Cheap."
Him: "Oh, right."
Me: "Yeah, and it's always online too. Probably. So if your internet connection goes down, you're fucked. You can't use it."
Him: "Yeah I doubt it"/"Well, I'm sure it'll be OK, and I don't want a PS4"/"Let's see how it turns out"

I've never had someone actually be outraged or the least bit upset by this. How.

No they wouldn't.

The only reason the PS4 is getting great forum press at the moment, is because Sony aren't committing to retarded, anti-consumer business models, like always online DRM and no used games.

Which ever company put out the most power console would garner praise from sections of GAF, but most of the bitterness towards next gen Microsoft is due to its business practises, not its hardware.

This fellow could benefit from not always being online.

What an idiotic way to approach things, another reason PR should be done by PR.
