Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

So was Aaron Greenberg joking when he claimed not to know who this guy is?
Probably not at the time. Microsoft is huge. Lots of middle management bloat.
I'm sure Greenberg is plenty aware of who Adam Orth is now that the news has spread around.

What a dumb ass for spouting off on Twitter about all that. Its his job to keep his mouth sealed. Guess he might be looking for a new job? Unless this is some sort of dumb trick by Microsoft? Toi gain negative buzz now, then swing those rumors the other way and be cool and drop all the anti used games and mandatory online stuff. positive buzz after their April unveiling after their April gig so to speak. Nah they wouldn't do that, right? Then again we've seen shit like Sega launch a next gen console the same day it was unveiled at E3. May 11,1995! I don't put anything past these companies anymore.

@LynnDawson Very sorry if you were offended, I don't actually know who he is.

lmao oh my God! I don't know why but that had me laughing so hard at work.

Yes, that's why Gies to told everyone buy a PlayStation 4 instead.

Come on folks, we only use, like, 10% of our brain power. Stop shaming it by using even less when trying to bash one person who has nothing to do with this ordeal to begin with. :/

You are oblivious. Gies, above all others, has been the most wrapped up in this always-online DRM twitter drama... go back to the Sim City debacle and see on which side of the line this guy parked his ass.

He downplayed and downplayed and downplayed. And oh wow what a surprise... he's downplaying again! I am quite shocked, myself.

Yeah, because if you post 'fuck black people' or 'fuck gays' its ok right?

Good excuse to do shit.

watership is right. He can do anything he wants on it technically. It's just he's not immune to backlash.

Microsoft are not going to respond because it's true. They will quietly whisper they have always online when the announce the nextbox. They would never announce it because the backlash would be huge as this thread proves.

On that note, who do you think Adam Orth answers to? I just want to have a mental picture of the scene of his P45 and ass being handed to him in an angry board room.

Saying "Don't buy something if you don't like it" does not equal the shit you just posted above. That's as bad as comparing always online to having power for a vacuum. If you want his journalism, read his site. That's his personal twitter account. Sure, shit you say has repercussions, but that doesn't mean he's speaking officially. That applies to everyone's personal twitter.

couldn't MS easily deny this and still avoid 'talking about' the NextBox?
Something along the lines of "We at Microsoft don't believe in the practice of putting our consumers at any disadvantage, online or offline. This goes for the future, too."

so if they remain silent, are we lead to believe this reality might really be true?
Because the alternative would be a public message of something like: "Yes. We want everyone to be online all the time. Please look forward to more information in May/June."

Tricky spot for them right now.

If Microsoft and Sony allowed them to, yes.

Maybe the next Arkham Batman will stick the entire game behind a code instead of just Catwoman missions. And maybe Microsoft and Sony will certify that game.

But you state that anybody can stick an entire single player disc-based PS3 and 360 game behind a code, right now, but you can't say that. Because you don't know if Sony and Microsoft would certify the title. Until that happens, you don't know.

All it takes is one publisher to do it. I think the only reason they don't is because retail wouldn't stand for it, which consoles need to keep satisfied.

If I cut out the 90% of the brain you don't supposedly use, will you still be the same person? There's a reason why people who suffers from brain damage will invariably lose certain brain functionality until their brain rewires some processes and its not because they all happen to be unlucky enough to have damaged the 10% they do use.

Use your brain! Use common sense! :p

It's taken me most of the morning, but I've read this entire thread. GAF can be so amazing! Best forum on the Internet, no doubt.

Can't wait to see if MS responds to this, and if so, how.

I'm sorry, explain to me what you would be losing? The promise of future unannouced games that may or may not be what you want? From your own description MS has provided you years of enjoyment with the 360 and what you are angry about is that someone may be doing that better next year?

Frustration is a sad excuse to justify personal attacks on someone(especially some of the more explicit ones) who is paid to give his opinion over nothing more than video games.

I don't think anyone should be making personal attacks on anyone. And I haven't. So if you're mostly annoyed at anyone telling him to die in a fire or something, I agree.

But if you don't think it's obtusely dismissive for a video game critic to say "so what" to the idea of a major console manufacturer / game publisher / game developer going always online for its next console, regardless of there being a competitive alternative, I don't know what to say.

Maybe always-online ends up being a fabulously successful idea, because enough people ignore it, don't know, or don't care, and it inevitably becomes the norm, even though it has no real benefit for consumers. That is bad.

Maybe always-online ends up being an unmitigated disaster, and Microsoft hemorrhages so much money on a dead Durango that they bail out of the console business. That is ALSO bad.

Maybe enough discussion and blowback occurs before the fact and MS reconsiders their plans.

These all seem like things a writer for a video game site might be marginally interested in talking about. And it seems like legitimate fodder for forum discussion. Video games are inherently "small potatoes". They're fucking video games. But if we're going to bother talking about them at all, this is exactly the kind of thing "worth" talking about.

I asked this in the other thread but how do MS market this?

When you sign up for a new cable/satellite service you can choose to get a free DVR/cable box or an Xbox Infinity.

If you choose Infinity You can sign up for Xbox Gold with a $20 discount on your monthly fee.

If you already have service upgrade your device for small fee of $50-$120.

I think this backlash gives them time to backpedal. This kind of thing is so arbitrary it's highly unlikely their system would be constructed in a manner that prevented them from taking it out. It's just a switch in the code somewhere. They only reason to do it would be to somehow make more money by forcing customers to stay in the online space.

Got his info from Linkedin. He founded Iron Galaxy Studios. There's a good chance he might be working on a PS4 / Durango project.

Isent Adam Boyes Sony's indie relations guy? I wonder if that net down comment was in reference to all this mess?

I think now would be a great time for Sony to have another confrence and just show the console and how it works while not connected, then they walk off stage.

It really is insane how fast this exploded, I cant imagine Microsoft is in a happy place right now.

Maybe they're sweeping him under the rug after this? haha

haha didn't that site get $750k from Microsoft? Why would they say anything bad about them?

VOX media got the money, and they run lots of ads from Microsoft and the headline Tech site The Verge ran this story yesterday. So there goes that theory.

"“Here’s the deal, folks. You do a commercial - you’re off the artistic roll call, forever. End of story. Okay? You’re another whore at the capitalist gang bang and if you do a commercial, there’s a price on your head. Everything you say is suspect and every word that comes out of your mouth is now like a turd falling into my drink.”

If you don't like the criticism of Gies, so what? There are other threads out there, go to another one.

Calling him a cunt as well as other insults isn't criticising him. Criticise him all you want, after reading up on his past actions on this forum, I'm right there with you, but it crosses a line when people make it personal by calling him a cunt, etc. It's unnecessary and beneath what I'd expect from GAF.

I doubt any company wants negative buzz before a product launch, unless there is some magical way to contact every single person who may have been exposed to said negative buzz and clear up the story will the actual facts and product demonstrations. I can't see a company launching what I imagine is a billion dollar product pulling some kind of viral shamalayan twist.

Well hopefully this shitstorm will alert MS if they didn't already know that they better have a good fucking reason to justify needing to be always connected (if they don't just scrap that policy after this which would be the best cause of action). I've suggested before maybe they're using cloud computing for voice recognition but they'll need a lot more than that now to appease gamers. If they go ahead and announce this thing and it's basically just for the sake of drm and getting people to pay for more dlc/micro-transactions then it will be a pr setback they may not recover from.
