Kotaku: Tales of Xillia won't hit US shores until August 6th

Well it could add up if they really don't want to skip Xillia 2 after releasing Xillia 1 (since they really want to catch up to the latest console releases in Japan) but yeah, I don't think it would happen and it is mostly wishful thinking but I also can't think of what other Tales things could be announced for this year.

But whatever, hopefully we find out what he means by "Tales filled year" soon.

It's possible that maybe we won't get Xillia 2 until 2014 (if at all, but I think we will), but maybe we'll get a closer release with Japan's upcoming game this fall? Of course one hasn't been announced yet but they always get one. Maybe 3DS will get a game?

They did two releases that one year with Legendia and Abyss, so I wouldn't be surprised. Would help VA-wise if they got both games out of the way.

They also did two releases in 2008 with Vesperia and Dawn of the New World, both titles coming in August or later. That's a bit more compelling an argument than Legendia and Abyss when they came out at opposite ends of the year. q: But yeah, they've done it before and they can do it again.

It isn't getting dubbed though, maybe that has something to do with it.

Xillia's English voice work has been done since November. Graces f's voicework finished in November of 2011 and it made it out for a March 2012 release ... I don't think Xillia's delay is entirely due to dubbing.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "late" release date for 1 is to give plenty of space to let Ni No Kuni breathe from earlier this year.

I certainly do believe Ni no Kuni had a certain effect, but would releasing Xillia in say, May, really detract from Ni no Kuni? Doubt it.

My theory is that we're getting a simultaneous launch with Europe, and that's what we're waiting on (they have to translate the script into 4 more languages).

It's most likely due to going for a simultaneous launch and due to the releases of other NB games. They want the games to be at least a month apart. Considering PxZ is coming out in June and Xillia was slated to be summer it's not surprising that this was going to come out July or August.

We're going to get a simultaneous launch considering the game is coming out in August. At that point Graces would have been out for a year. I don't think it's due to translation that we're waiting on but moreso waiting until it's been about a year since the last Tales launch.

Hmm, I still can't bring myself to care about this one.

It can't be typical Tales burnout this time, Graces was like, last March?

@bolded:

In 2012, they released a Naruto game and Graces f on the same day, lol. I honestly think Xillia would make a dent in XZone, not the other way around. I think they easily could have pushed back XZone rather than Xillia.

But I think translation for Europe definitely has something to do with it. Considering that the other 4 languages' text will be paired with the English audio and that translators from English to Spanish/German/French/Italian are probably much easier to come by than Japanese to S/G/F/I, it's likely the other 4 languages are being translated from English, meaning there is at a least a certain amount of lag between when the English translation started and when the other translations started.

Naruto and Graces probably have overlap, but I imagine both were reasonably safe. I think Project X Zone would be screwed over more though, especially going by the reception it got from importers.

I like to compare the longrunning Tales action-RPG series to fast food: they're not particularly nutritious and you always know what you're gonna get, but when you've got the craving, they can't be beat. Hideo Baba, on the other hand, says they're more like gumdrops.

Uh oh, looks like Jason is struggling to contain his ENTHUSIASM.

But I do agree with him on how Tales totally satisfies my JRPG craving, and I'm not inclined to turn away even if a character is annoying or if the plot in one is lame.

---

Tail end of Summer? Eh...as long as there's little competition. Will be interesting to see why later.

Baba keeps hammering in this Tales-of year thing, I'm waiting for him to spill the beans already.

Marketing has changed since last year. The marketing pattern for games recently has been a month or two before release. They've also been avoiding a same month release as a result. While it's true that Naruto and Graces f came out at the same time, the marketing wasn't there for either of those games recently. The PR has changed.

In addition, I think the European scripts are done for the most part. Considering games go gold roughly 1 month before release and assuming the August release date is solid, I'm going to think that they should be roughly finishing up on everything for the next 3 months. Also, idk why PxZ is coming out before Xillia. It might be because they want to get that game out earlier due to not wanting it release closer to the fall quarter. I don't know.

I think you have the right ideas but I'm not really sold on your reason as to why it's coming out in August.

Fair enough, on the marketing shift. It probably wasn't smart to do Graces and Naruto on the same day, even if they were different enough genres. I'm sure there was at least some degree of overlap given they are both anime inspired games.

And it's mentioned so casually in the article. Still finally it will be out though I am wondering about this teasing myself. It's more like a Tales filled second half of the year in any case.

I feel like Baba is just hyping up the announcement for the next Tales game on PS3. I don't think he meant that the surprise would be for overseas fans in particular.

I mean what are our possibilities currently?:
  1. Japanese announcement of the next PS3 Tales game
  2. Localization announcement of Xilla 2
  3. An anime project
  4. Worldwide release of another port on 3DS?
  5. PS1/PS2 Tales games on PSN
  6. Vesperia PS.... just kidding, that's never going to happen lol

I don't think a "Tales of filled year" actually means we're getting a year of Tales releases. The best us overseas will get will probably be an announcement for something coming out 2014.

I actually assume the release date wasn't supposed to be announced yet considering Schreier's article is the only one that mentions the release date and every other article cites it. So... yeah.

They must have got confused, thats not in the same day as Lightning Returns.

Stealth Lightning Returns release date announcement?

More spinoff games!

Well, getting an announcement of another Tales game in the upcoming year is definitely a "Tales of filled year" for overseas fans.

I don't think he'd be talking about Japan to the Western press. As long as they make localization announcements I think that fills the "Tales filled year" thing he's talking about. I don't expect any other Tales games released here besides Xillia, but if they can announce Xillia 2's localization (for a release early 2014?) this year too that's good. Same goes for the eventual new PS3 Tales, though I'd imagine they'd announce that after Xillia 2 would release.

Xillia 2 could happen this year if they started work on it already. True they did say it would come if Xillia sold well enough. But if they were confident maybe they already started.

Or maybe their big game for Japan this year is a 3DS title and we'll be getting that too?

I doubt they'd want to overshadow their premier title in Tales of Xillia with its sequel in the same fiscal year.

Are you talking about overshadowing in hype? Wouldn't be a problem if we didn't know about Xillia 2 until after the first hits

I do find it more plausible that if they release another game this year that it will be whatever Japan is getting, though.

Well Namco did released 2 .hack games in the same year, so it is possible. It also make sense to localize them back to back since you can just bring the voice actor back. Otherwise it could be another PS2 to 3DS port?

Would not put it past Bandai Namco to release the first and blame low sales for not bringing across the second. They pretty much treat Tales fans outside Japan with contempt already.

Is it better then Graces f? Cause I hated that game.

I said it before in another thread but I'll say it here again:

It's impossible for Xillia to be as horrible as Graces F was. Impossible.

I've got some pretty high hopes for this game. It better not disappoint me :3

The consensus seems to be that the story, characters and overall presentation is better while the gameplay isn't quite as good and it is rather lacking in content compared to Vesperia, Abyss, and Graces.

well I kept the first option because it wouldn't be the first time Baba referred to japanese stuff in a western PR interview. He (wisely?) assumes the fanbase is up to date on the japanese announcements.

And yeah, I assume its a localization announcement. That or an anime project. Baba has previously talked about how various Tales of multimedia projects could help make the series more recognizable and increase its appeal. A (worldwide streaming) anime project would fit with this.

4 months is far too short of a turnaround time for Xillia 2. It doesn't make financial sense to release them within 4 months of each other. Even Atlus waited 6 months inbetween its DDS games.

Hell, a lot of players probably wouldn't be done with Xillia in only 4 months.

And Baba made it pretty clear that the next big Tales game is on PS3.

Did he? If you're referring to this specific interview, Baba said "no plans" for PS4/WiiU/Next Xbox.

I mean, PS3 is certainly the console home for the series so a PS3 game is quite likely, but I wouldn't rule out 3DS yet either. The system is on fire.

edit: WOOPS just saw the "console that a lot of our fans already have" bit

Ignore this

See, I think what you're saying is totally possible, but if Baba's idea is indeed that the localizations will make this a Tales filled year then that's pretty bogus. 2012 was very much a Tales filled year for Western shores.

I get that it's difficult to maintain continuity across a global audience with such a lofty claim like Tales filled year when the releases have been staggered apart, and he's making a great effort in trying to come to US and EU events, but I would be just a bit disappointed.

An animated project would be pretty sweet, IMO.

In all honesty, I can see NB skipping over Xillia 2 entirely to do a simultaneous release for their next title. I keep finding it odd that Baba is saying this is going to be a Tales filled year but doesn't really say much about it. At the same time he's saying this for the US but not JP. Makes me think that there is no reason to say it in Japan since there is a loyal fanbase whereas they're trying to rebuild it in the West and keep it growing. I wonder if this is the thing that Baba is saying to look forward to. It's not probable or plausible but I seriously can't think of any other explanation as to why Baba keeps freaking saying this is going to be a Tales filled year. He pretty much confirmed that the Vita games aren't coming. I doubt there will be another mainline Tales this fiscal year. The only logical thinking is that it'll be news. I don't know. I'm sure Schala can chime in on this or something.

I'm sure sitting on it kills hype, too. I mean really, Project X Zone was announced after Tales of Xillia for a translation, and it's coming out before it. D:

Project X Zone has less text to translate, also they arent going to redub the entire game...

Graces f has the most cohesive and versatile combat system in the franchise from what I played. Xillia is more akin to Vesperia. If you enjoyed Vesperia then you will most likely enjoy Xillia. The story is a lotttttttttttttttttt better than Graces.

I have no time for the EXCESSIVE amount of Japanese RPG's we're getting these days, FUCK

Not the first time I've heard this but it still worries me somewhat as Vesperia really bored me after a while. I sure hope the same won't happen with Xillia :/
