Microtransactions mentioned by 343 = OH MY GOD I'M GOING TO PS3!
Microtransaction bacon skin already in Black Ops 2 = Oh, cool, more to buy.

Agh.
  • Halo's popularity & population is dwindling
  • The remaining fanbase still has issues with the game

Yeah, it seems more like people taking their Halo 4/Always online Xbox RUMOR hate out on a subject that is different from either of those.

I would pay $5 to have my Sol symbol back.

I'm pissed because I've lost my emblem in every fucking Halo game.

Halo 2: Race
Halo 3: Librarian + Display
Halo 3 ODST: Some ODST-exclusive one
Reach: Crosshair dot + Display

More than likely my Halo 4 emblem (Chevron + Rogue Skull) won't make it to Halo 5, either.

What are some Achievements you guys would actually enjoy doing in future titles?

I think the achievements should be what the challenges currently are and the challenges should be what the achievements are. Kill 200 people with a long range weapon is a better achievement, whereas assassinate a player using a hardlight shield is a better challenge.

Someone in the microtransactions thread had a really good idea.

I would totally get behind on disc locked COSMETIC DLC..... if it meant map packs would be free. Because this is a move that will drastically help the game. I want to play the fucking maps I bought but since no one buys DLC I get fucked.

Also, is the Games on Demand ODST... thats just the campaign+firefight right? They don't have a magical Halo 3 mythic in there?

Assassinate a player using a hardlight shield is shitty no matter where you put it. Developers need to stop encouraging players to perform hyperspecific behaviors like that, whether through achievements or challenges. They need to understand that those things have power over players, and they need to be responsible in how they use them. Even if a tiny percentage of players spend a few matches trying to get it, that's hundreds and hundreds of other players that they're fucking over by screwing around for that achievement.

If I were making multiplayer DLC achievements, I would just include one or two "Seriously"-style achievements in each pack. Kill a thousand players, get a thousand headshots, earn a thousand kills with X class of weapon (NOT specific weapons, that is a really stupid trap to fall into), win two hundred matches, get two hundred sprees, whatever. Make it complement your commendation system rather than the asinine challenges that we've seen over the last few years. You need your achievements and challenges to be fairly general in terms of how a player can choose to go about it, or else you just get assholes doing one specific thing over and over again, ruining matches because you've prioritized that behavior over what should be the primary goal: winning the match and helping your teammates in the process. The challenge needs to encompass a huge number of playstyles so you aren't pigeonholing players into the one specific style they need to get that achievement.

Does Bungie have all these emblems on their copyright or something? I can't just see 343 skipping all of these.

...huh.

A couple years ago, I decided to make a random contribution after reading the poem The Highwayman in class and decided to edit the page for Usze 'Taham (your red-ish co-op Elite buddy in Halo 3) to point out his armor color is claret, which is somewhere between violet and crimson, used as an adjective in the poem if I'm remembering right.

And I just saw this on Halopedia.

This. Please.

It has to deal with putting them as textures on every model. I don't remember the specifics of it, but there isn't enough memory to map them on to every armor so you either cut armor or cut emblems. There was an HBO thread about why certain emblems from 3/ODST not making it into Reach.

This. Please.

No. For 2 reasons. 1) You're forcing that bad play everytime the challenge comes up versus the one time needed for the achievement. 2) It's much easier to procedurally generate challenges versus custom creating them.

Halo 3's Co-Op characters could have been a great addition if they had given you unique dialogues during the campaign... A missed opportunity. Anyway, I hated to play those two guys. They had no real part of the story...

Yeah. Thats why Reach is #16, because the population from #5 to #16 is only a thousand or two.

Have some common sense. No, Reach's population didn't exceed Halo 4. Like, if you thought for 5 seconds you would be "oh well that doesn't add up, its not true", whether or not what the population counter says on the game.

You mad.

If CEA had gotten matchmaking with new graphics and net code it would probably have more players than Halo 4 right now. lol

Why is it that developer's always seem so resistant to keeping an established formula for a game? Are they bored so they want to try something new, or is there some research somewhere that states that even though people constantly clamor for the same (but better!) that they won't actually buy it? Is there an actually business case for it? I mean I remember hearing it all the way back when Super Mario Bros 2 was not just more Super Mario Bros.

I actually don't mind the changes that occur between games (improved network performance is the one thing I want to always see, that is the one thing that keeps me from jumping back to older games all of the time), even if they are decidedly different, but I would be fine it remaining along a fairly fixed path as well. Although people also complain about that, I recall a few 'Halo 2.5 lol' posts when Halo 3 came out, but those were still people who bought and stuck with the game.

I think the optimum scenario is to provide generous and flexible custom options and a MP that sticks to an established formula, but branch out in your SP and a 'beta'-type playlist where the best custom options can be tested out and pushed into your mainstream if it gains some traction.

So picture if for Halo 4 you basically had the core gameplay that seemed implied from the BR gif from so long ago. But you also had the 'hey let's try out this noise' playlists. Hell, get crazy and when you jump in you have the default with somewhat expected gameplay tweaks, but also the 'Halo CE', 'Halo 2','Halo 3', 'Halo Reach' style playlists. Change your perspective from splitting the population to allowing a long tail to pick up new populations. I'm not saying this would be easy by any means, and having a whole bunch of playlists of course has its issues, but those are UX issues, it is a problem that can be solved.

Not really related, except maybe tangentially, social aspects going into gaming should be less about tweeting or dirtying up your friend's facebook pages with mind-numbing posts about mundane game related tasks and more about gameplay sharing and teaching people how to get into a game successfully. Help people to be better players and to find other people to play with.

God do I hate the sandbox of Halo 4 combined with sprint and the long shield recharge time :(

Though Rumble Pit is okay, playing it the whole time now

Why would they focus on the people that are going to buy the game regardless of what they change when they can chase that Call of Duty money?

I fear that microtransactions only being cosmetic will only last so long next generation.
I actually really hope all the armor skins and bullshit are purchases, so instead of having an unlock/progression system they can just make the base game balanced.

Halo 4 OST Vol 2 is great. Much better than Vol 1 because you can associate specific gameplay moments or cutscenes with the music which I think is the biggest issue of Vol 1. It is available at Spotifiy if you have an account and don't want to pay 10bucks or something.

If they sell armor for money to subsidize the entire playerbase getting DLC maps then I'd be perfectly fine with that.
I'm with you on that. ME3 had micro transactions for multiplayer and all of the DLC for it as free. I'd love to see something like that for Halo 5, and maybe even make the limited edition come with all micro transaction unlocks.

They will NEVER do this. Selling armor visa microtransactions is a way to get MORE revenue, not a way to displace one form of income for another. Thinking that selling armor will get us all free DLC is delusional.

It worked for TF2.

Also realtalk the best time for Halo multiplayer (post Halo 2) is before the first DLC hits, because you can just log on and play. Once the DLC drops it's "oh, we want to play on the new maps.. sorry" or "that playlist requires two dlc packs.. guess we're just playing Team Slayer tonight".

:-/ Can I trade my Vol 1 in?
That's what I thought I was purchasing.
