3D Mario & Luigi platformer. Co-op, local and multiplayer.

It'd sell billions.

I really wouldn't be surprised if the next one is a 'split screen' 3D Mario.

i don't think there's any way i could find 3d mario that interesting, but two player co-op mario in 3d would be it.

they could even call it super mario bros. 3d. i mean holy shit, that's what i wanted when i was a kid. well, that and the mario/sonic crossover platformer.

This kind of reasoning irks me. You were off by 21%. That's not that close.

Edit:
There was a former poster who used to do weekly predictions for systems that would sell ~5K. He'd predict like 6K, and it was 4K, and he'd pat himself on the back for being 2K off, when he was 50% off. :p

The fact that such a thing "irks" you should be far more worrying chap.

It irks me. It doesn't send me into a spiraling fit of rage.

You're saying "Look at me! I'm only 4K off!" when you're actually off by ~20%, which isn't just incredibly close. Misrepresentation. :p

Hasn't LM 2 been in development since 2011 or even late 2010? Probably why it wasn't even considered for Wii U.

For the record, Miyamoto was attempting to have two players in Mario 64, so I would not be surprised at all to have coop Mario 3D. Especially since both players could have their own screen now.

Iwata: Ever since Mario Bros., you've had your heart set on making a multiplayer Mario game. You've tried each time, but it's never quite come together… Even with Mario 64, it started with Mario and Luigi running around together, didn't it?

Miyamoto:That's right. The screen was split and they went into the castle separately. When they meet in the corridor, I was incredibly happy! (laughs) Then there was also the mode where the camera is fixed and we see Mario running away, steadily getting smaller and smaller.

2009, bud. Early 2009.

Next Level was working on another project for Nintendo at that time that got put aside for LM2. Wonder what that could be, and if they're working on it again?

Wii U and Vita back down.

I really wonder if PS4 will fare much better.

there is a very good chance that it will because it will get that wich vita and wii u are clearly lacking: 3rd party support. .

Games like tales ,MGS Final Fantasy and every other 3rd party studio based in japan who wants to sell their games to the west and their game does not fit on 3DS will be on board as apparently Wii u isn't gonna cut it.

Of course at the end of the day it will come down to what will be on it and what will it cost.
but i highly doubt it will be on wii u level of sales.

As a personal prediction i think Ps4 is gonna play second fiddle compared to 3ds but it will be right on its heels with Ps3 somewhere close by.

unless Sony does something really crazy IE price tag ps2 level.

I predict weekly sales to build up my monthly prediction. I'll just say I was way off this week. ;)

Yet again though, this too is all on potential.

Not everyone will buy a box without FF and MGS and will wait till they actually come out.

Unless it;s priced cheaply, I really can't see it having long legs either, especially given the more western focus of the system.

I really honestly think that Home consoles are done (in Japan.) I don't think the PS4 is going to make any sort of splash and track (at least initially) well behind the Wii U. This is based on the fact that I don't feel it'll have any Japanese hard hitters at launch. Though I'll wait till TGS to make any formal prediction.

PS4 will play second fiddle to the 3DS because the 3DS is a portable, and a very popular one at that, but if third parties don't want to support the Wii U, there's nowhere else they can go on next gen consoles besides the PS4.

Not worth judging it just on the launch.

I can see the PS4 outperforming the PS3 if Nintendo doesn't fix the Wii U (which it appears they may be incapable of doing).

As MS said correctly last generation before the PS3 was out and the 360 was selling like crap, it is very difficult to compete against an unknown hyped system; when the PS4 is released it will have very few games, no BC and 3rd parties will be very cautious. By that time, Nintendo will release a wave of good games (Pikmin, Luigi Bros U et al) and have a steady lineup of future releases (Smash, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Xeno 2, etc).

If the WiiU continue failing in THAT scenario, then I will say it's doomed, but when it is going against dreams and promises, I'm not that worried...

I swear if Nintendo just made god damn games come out it would stabilize at around 30K and they wouldn't have to panic (as much).

I simply do not understand how Iwata could let this happen. A solid 6 month period with no major releases on a brand new console. 6 MONTHS!!!!?????????
(Game and Wario, and DQX are not major releases, DQX has been out on Wii for months)

Wow, maybe it is time for him to go. I think 6 months without any big Nintendo 1st party IP combined with no relationship building with 3rd parties, is a disaster and he has broken almost every promise he made with this system.

You're right, but are you then suggesting that the PS4 has even potential heavy hitters (later in it's life) greater than those that are coming to the Wii U? IF the launch of the PS4 is a complete mess, as it could well be, you're surely suggesting that games coming out later for the PS4 will bring it up to levels above Wii U after it receives it's dose of Mario (Kart)/Donkey Kong/Animal Crossing/Smash.
Again, I'd wait till TGS to make any final judgements but as it stands now the entire revealed catalogue of the PS4 doesn't stand a chance of even matching NSMBWU (in Japan.) If it weren't for Deep Down I'd even suggest the entire revealed line up wouldn't reach half of NSMBWU.
Consider how the Wii U is selling with backwards compatitability, NSMBWU and likely a lower price point than the PS4, then imagine the launch of the PS4 especially given the declining reputation of Sony. (Again, TGS may well have something suprising but so far PS4 will make the Wii U look good.)

It's fucking unbelievable. The only answer is that they delayed for a relaunch. They bet on mouth to mouth wii-like success. It didn't happen (and it was predictable) and they're in deep shit. Talking about shitty management...

This GIF sums up Nintendo in the seventh generation rather perfectly.

Where is it from?

I think the thing that gets me most is that the system was delayed ~6 months in the first place to improve the line-up.

3DS sold 56.864 units this week.

That's its lowest mark since 3DS LL model was introduced. Previous low was 60.232 (Oct 15 - Oct 21 2012).

After price cut it reached its lowest mark one week prior to launch of the 3DS LL when it sold 44.399. Tomodachi Collection: Shin Seikatsu and Golden Week will assure that 3DS doesn't get below that amount.

For comparison's sake, it took NDS after DSL launch 104 weeks to sell below what 3DS did this week.

So as we all knew, 3DS is definitely a beast sales-wise. But is nothing compared with the biggest Titan there will ever be that is NDS.

After Wii & DS success, I think Iwata deserves at least another generation before deciding whether to give him the boot or not.

Yeah, there's no way he's going to leave in the foreseeable future. He made Nintendo more successful than ever with Wii and DS. 3DS is going well. If Wii U is not going to pick some steam in the next year, maybe he's going to resign.

Let him become president of HAL again, then. He's done too much for Nintendo to simply leave.

HAL Laboratory is a subsidary of Nintendo, thus employed by NOJ. Iwata going back to HAL means he'd have to take orders from the new Nintendo chief. It'd be a disgraceful demotion, and he'd rather leave the company altogether than be subjected to it.

He's a Nintendo guy as much as Sakurai and Aonuma are. He'll stay at Nintendo until he's retired. In what capacity, who knows.

Yup. I have to believe something like Wii Fit U is completely done. I suspect the same with Pikmin and W101. The only plausible scenario I see is Nintendo is preparing a major relaunch for this summer and they've decided to write off the first half of the year.

He'll retire if he's no longer CEO. Anyway the bloodbath earnings report is only 2 weeks away, but he won't be gone then although their stock will probably plummet.

I'm predicting 12k Vita next week.

After that it will continue dropping. Wii U will probably be around 9k.

There is no evidence to even suggest a new baseline. Price drops have never ever increased a baseline themselves.

Agreed. The man is a liar, and I'm sick of his half-assed apologies.

Iwata in the January 23rd Nintendo Direct said:
Nintendo takes seriously its responsibility to offer a steady stream of new titles in the very early days of a new platform to establish a good lineup of software. On the other hand, we also firmly believe we have to offer quality experiences when we release new titles. Based on our software development schedules at the end of last year, we concluded we should spend a little more time satisfying our Nintendo standard of quality. I apologize to those supporting Wii U about the lack of new titles from Nintendo in January and February. But please understand that we will have new titles to offer from March onward. We are planning a steady stream of games from this spring to summer, including Game & Wario, Wii Fit U, Pikmin 3, Lego City Undercover from our friends at TT Games, and of course, The Wonderful 101, which Platinum Games is working on.
What qualifies as a steady stream?

In one way, perhaps though, the 3DS could pass the NDS lifetime sales? Maybe I'm crazy but I feel like A) The 3DS will be the main Nintendo Handheld for a bit longer than the DS and B) Although it's possible, it looks unlikely that the 3DS will have as much competition from another dedicated handheld than last generation which cut off the tail of the DS sales I feel. C) The dedicated console market is also likely to be smaller next gen, so while not direct competition certainly less overall competition.

Pssh, he's programmer at heart. He's a gamer at heart. He'll work on games at Nintendo.

You have a crazy view if you really think he's going from getting the boot from CEO to programmer at the same company especially in Japan

I wonder if they did have plans of releasing Wii Fit U and Pikmin 3 in April/May when he made that statement, but when sales kept getting worse they made the call to execute a price drop/relaunch this summer and pushed those titles back.

I'm sure you remember what this guy did as a programmer. He's much too experienced for that now, but he'll go back to designing games if he's not a CEO.

Wouldn't surprise me, but I also wouldn't be surprised if their development is such a clusterfuck that those titles actually aren't done.

I'm sorry but you dont get disgraced as a CEO especially in Japan and then stay at the same company. It's not going to happen.

DS was only out for 4 years until it got replaced with an enhanced system capable of playing a new range of games. I wouldn't say you're crazy but I think they'd want to bring out something similar if they decided to prolong the 3DS line. Beyond DS+DSi.
As they wouldn't take the exact same upgrade again, it maybe distinct enough to stand as a new platform.
