Xbox: A Nostalgia Thread

Ubisoft still has fantastic franchises, but they were just amazing in the Xbox era with military based games they published and/or developed. Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon were all solid.

I don't think there has been a better ghost recon game after this one. Classic!

This game in co-op multiplayer was one of numerous reasons why the Xbox was my preferred console back then. So damn good.

I agree, although I played og gr on pc, gr2 forced me to buy an xbox. It's funny how we read about next gen cod having lean/peak, prone roll, slide shooting, etc when ghost recon did all of these things 10 years ago. I used to love being my teams mp5 and sensor bitch, rushing to the front lines to get my sensors down. The classes were balanced and made change your play style accordingly. The best thing gr did other then it's shooting mechanics which allowed for a skill gap was the ability to shoot someone in the foot and then they would limp and move slower or shoot them in the arm and then their reticle would close slower making it harder to hit someone. Oh the good old days of gaming when being good mattered.

Awesome sauce OP. I still remember being at the original Xbox's launch party in NYC's Time Square with my sister. Bill gates showed up at the event (they gave everyone free food while we waited for midnight). I remember telling my sister "I don't know what game to get with this", someone overheard and said "I've heard good things about Halo"... Yep, I wound up getting that and the rest was history.

Yeah, I was an extremely pissed off gamer when Sega discontinued the Dreamcast, and blamed its failure on the PS2 and its ridiculous pre-launch hype machine. Then when the Xbox launched it was like a spiritual successor: based on Windows architecture, similar controller layout, etc. I couldn't have been happier, and picked one up along with Halo and Star Wars: Obi-Wan. Then with the release of Shenmue II, JSRF, Panzer Dragoon Orta it was like the Dreamcast had never left. It was magic.

Speaking of which...

Should be in everyone's collection. Significantly underrated launch window title, best Episode I inspired Star Wars game, and fun lightsaber combat.

I loved the first Xbox. I moved into the Xbox bandwagon since I felt it was like the torchbearer of the Dreamcast. It had great Japanese support too, although it was more of the quirky Japanese type games that came out on the DC and somewhat different to the more mainstream PS2 Japanese games at the time. It was mostly due to the great support Sega gave the console, although some of MS' published games were great too. Also KOTOR is one of my favorite games of all time.

I mean, Phantom Dust for $19.99? Get out.

To me the Xbox 360, which I tried to love as much as the original, did not live up to its predecessor. Might have to do with a change in the type of games coming out and losing some interest in gaming in general.

I wish I could revert my dashboard back to the NXE instead of this gosh awful disgusting putrid nasty yucky Metro ad infested dashboard.

Either way, Xbox 360 gave me a lot of good times over the years and was a vast improvement over the Wii system I owned for 2 years prior. Xbox Live Arcade rules.

This game got a lot of shit for it's graphics including the old "lol looks like N64", but look at this video, all the physics, lighting, and effects going on nothing else came close.

Wreckless Gameplay

I had a blast with this game too! I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Did anyone else really enjoy this game?

A really awesome boat combat game, which I'm sad never got a sequel.

There is no power greater than X.

Why is everyone giving credit to J Allard for the niche/core games lineup? Allard worked on hardware and platform. Ed Fries and Shane Kim handled the software lineup as well as Peter Moore. And Peter Moore mostly went after the big franchises. So the main guy you should be praising is Ed Fries I guess.

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet:

Unreal Championship 2

The multiplayer on the original Xbox was fantastic. Rainbow Six 3 and Ghost Recon had such a great online community.

Even before XBL, I remember plugging the Xbox into the LAN to play Halo:CE through Gamespy Arcade.

I still have my modded Xbox hooked up, it's a solid console even today. Even has HD support.

My favourite games back in the old days were Rallisport Challenge 2, DOA3 (and the other Team Ninja titles), Buffy, Fable, KOTOR, Baldur's Gate series...
I modded it back in 2005 to have XBMC and to install my games to my HDD. I could also play some of my PC games on the TV through it too. What an awesome console, great to see the love here.

I don't understand why is there a need to proclaim a console better than other.

Anyways, my only regret it's that a I own a Xbox 1.6 with xcalibur video chip, so I can not play JSRF, Gun Valkyrie or Panzer Dragoon Orta in 480p. I will never understand why microsoft decided to block the progressive scan support in Europe, you have to mod the console and change it of region for being able to see the games as they should.

^^^^This.

This should be a thread for Xbox nostalgia and memories, not the usual console vs. console banter. Save that for the hundred other threads about the subject.

Did anyone else like really love Fable?

I remember (I wasn't that in-touch with forums, just gaming stuff through print and a few webistes like ign) hearing that a lot of people disliked Fable because it failed to deliver on some of the promises Molyneux made. While that's understandable, when you get past that, the actual Fable game itself is an amazing, unique and just extremely memorable game.

I remember the great beginning, the training at the school, finally going off into the world on your own, and then finally starting to get accommodated to the world. Changing your character's appearance, getting different response from NPC's, and seeing your character actually progress (getting buffer or leaner; horns or angel halo) was all really awesome stuff for the time, and it all worked extremely well with the half-realistic, half-Pixar graphical style they went for.

I enjoyed Fable II but not really as much, and I have yet to play Fable III. I really hope Lionhead brings out another one sometime this generation, because the Fable series is something that could be right back on top of the game if they did it right.

2010 is also the year Microsoft killed off support for original Xbox Live games.

RIP Halo 2 ;_;

I remember that after they shut down the servers, I got 400 MS Points, 3 Months of LIVE and access to the Reach Beta, for being a "loyal customer" by playing a couple games of Halo 2 over live on my 360. It was quite the nice surprise. Anyone else get that at the time?

Awww the little chicken chasa!

You pretty much summed up my exact thoughts. Absolutely adored the first Fable.

Ah yes. I got my original Xbox for the original Halo. The day after Christmas I ran to Game Stop and bought a Duke Controller because by that point they'd already released the S. I went into the store and asked for it and the guy asked if I was sure I wanted the big one when there was a new S. I said no I wanted the big one and he turns to his buddy "Hey, here's someone else who prefers the big controller!" I could not stand the S controller for some reason so used that big one for years.

Not sure how I ever got used to the S controller on the 360. I got my 360 in 2006 for Dead Rising. Haven't had my 360 in years now but I got my moneys worth out of it.

Don't see myself ever getting a 720 or whatever they call it. Exclusives no longer phase me. I still haven't gotten a PS3. I usually get PlayStation consoles at the end of their life. Got my PS1 in 2000 and my PS2 in 2005.

Really the only consoles I am interested in anymore are Nintendo consoles only because I can't play Mario or Zelda games on my computer.

Welcome beautful toddler, Madison Elizabeth, to the horde!
I was the first of my friends to get an OG Xbox. I got it when Splinter Cell dropped. I would just look at the screen because I couldn't believe what the fuck I was witnessing. I primarily game on the PC now but for this generation and others, the 360 is the greatest console that I've ever owned. I'm going to be there day one again like I was for the 360 for the next generation of Xbox. I'm presuming it is going to be my favorite console three generations running.

I loved it. Sooooo much.

my face Xbox memory is halo 2... Queued up on Oxford st in London to buy it... Somehow I got on the BBC news report about it and in the morning I got a phone call... From my folks saying they knew I'd been up all night on Xbox and I had better still be going to my lectures. Good times!

Og xbox live is a 100 times better than current live, it was lacking the features that we have now but it was a much nicer place to be. Current live feels like it has now soul.

I got my Xbox some 8 months ago, primarily to play a few games that are not BC on Xbox 360. Unfortunately, my used unit's DVD drive doesn't work that well, so the most reliable way of playing those games is ripping them on my PC and FTPing them to the Xbox. What I wouldn't give for a fully working Xbox emulator and a comprehensive offer of Xbox games on Microsoft's new platform...

Halo 2 Tribute

Man those were good times. For me, it was the peak of multiplayer gaming. I just can't play online FPS much anymore. Halo 2 was the right time, with the right people, and had the right gameplay and set of maps for me .

6kzrxQe.gif

Well said. Halo 2 was an amazing game in its own right but it's the memories of all night legendary coop with my best mate and the raucous, sugar-fueled lan parties with all my other halo-obsessed buddies that mean no other game will ever top it for me.

Oh man I went into the basement to grab my old Xbox, but the moment I plugged it in I heard the most high pitch noise ever (imagine that buzz you get from old CRTs displaying whites or plasma TVs but way louder). I had to unplug it because I got a headache. Is there anywhere to pick up a good condition Xbox? It's so depressing that my old console is finally dead.

I needs my Shenmue + Fatal Frame.

that list is laughable when compared to the PS2

not even being a dick i just honestly cant see how anyone could possibly think the xbox was even close to being as good as the PS2

Ahh, it's been a long, long time since I've seen a post like this. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. It's almost as if I'm back on GFAQ where the Xbox was a brick shit-house that didn't have any games and couldn't possibly compare to the magnificent majesty of the PS2.

Anyway, I completely forgot about Otogi earlier. To my utter shame. Such an amazing IP, not suited to everyone's tastes mind, but what an amazing IP. Would love to see a third game at some point...

And is that Breakdown I spy. Oh Lord, what a game.

So much time that should have been used for studying instead playing Capture The Gold and Hunter mode online. And leading a rousing chorus of "The Self Preservation Society" when a team of Mini's beat a team of Corvettes.

The original X-Box was THE racing game machine. And I loved it.
