Final Fantasy VIII confirmed for PC according to Famitsu leak

Since it's a scan, I obviously can't link, but there a little part about how a re-edition of VIII is coming, supposedly from tomorrow's Famitsu. It will include the same kind of "game booster" as FFVII.

No release date.

If it's still using their stupid Digital River service:

via... steam (and other digital distributors) or SE online store?

Hopefully they've learned their lesson with going through their own store. Plus the Steam database entries for FF7 and FF8 have been updated recently (I think?), so I assume they're making moves to support the service.

I will buy it if it comes out on Steam, otherwise I'm not going to bother with it. Steam will make it accessible enough for me to want to re-play it. It's my favourite FF after all.

My first FF experience was VIII demo on PC. It was glorious. That balroom dance CG is still buried in my mind.

Still kicking myself for not buying boxed copy when they were around for a normal price.

It'll be on their digital river service unless squeenix all of a sudden got in touch with the western pc market.

Glad many more people will be able to experience the definitive version of VIII.

Of course, I then pity those poor fools for buying from SE, who don't let you re-download your games after a certain time limit.

But it's already on PC. And if you want a hi-res version just buy the PSX copy and emulate it.
PSX emulators don't double the rendered resolution of the backgrounds and CG movies, which is what the PC version has. PC version > emulated PSX > PSX

I don't mind if it's not on Steam at first but if they use Digital River then SE can shove it up their arse. Hopefully more news will be translated from the Famitsu article by some lovely GAFfer.

Bought, played and 100%'d the shit out of FFVII in record time.

I will buy FFVIII but I'm horrible at this game :(

So what exactly is different about this to the previous pc release? What was the difference with the recent FF7 re release from the original? Better res textures or something?

EDIT: I'll probably get this if it means I no longer have to set up a windows XP installation every time I feel like replaying it. That's enough for me. I love FF8.

I remember reading about fixing the music easily on PC, even some good enhancement mods. I wonder if SE has the backgrounds and CG in higher res somewhere available, they should really update it if it does

The music was different (not as bad as the original PC-version). Achievements, "game-cheats" and a better translation.

Fixed again.

Actually, FF8 used its own music format on PC, which made it easier to mod the "instruments" from the PSX version in after the PSF files were ripped. Why this wasn't done initially is a mystery, but it's not using standard midi.

Went through the FFVII PC OT... what an awesome ride that was!

Good, they got the riff raft out of the way. Now they can focus on the best, the greatest, the most awesome Final Fantasy IX.

Dreams.

If it was like VII they just released, no thanks. They have no problems updating older FFs, and even X, X-2, but they can't upres VII, VIII or IX at all? I fail to believe that. At least make the FMV's widescreen and clean them up a bit.

You can's just "upres" 2D pre-rendered backgrounds. The situation isn't comparable to the full 3D PS2 games. They probably don't even have the source material to do anything with the FMVs either.
