So basically the Vita needs a relaunch haha!

lol yeah..I guess I was trying to say a re-launch with the right moves to back it up.

Yep, I love my Vita too, but good lord. That number is horrendous haha.

yeah :D

On a different note I was trying to figure out what the heck DDDA was..Dragon's Dogma bomba

About operation rainfall game...I didn't even know it was released. Wonder if XSeed are happy with the result. I hope they are....love their work so I want to see them rewarded

There is a lot of marketing confusion around 50k. It hasn't really been able to differentiate itself from 49K in the market and the TV ads are SO BAD. Did you see the TV ad that showed the unique features of 50K? Like that extra K? LOL what are you doing marketers!! Plus 50K is slow to get software out but mostly its brand confusion. I think 50K should be called Super 49K or even 49K 2.

I think we should start a pool for who misses their forecasts by more. 9 million for Wii U or 5 for PSP+Vita. I'm going with Wii U just because of how big that number is they could miss it by 4 million and and all Vita has to do is ship 1 million WW.

Edit: Once Vita is sub 10k stores aren't carrying it anymore. Complete waste of space.

I can see the Vita + PSP hit 2 million for the year between Europe and Japan.

Well Nintendo has the 3DS to keep them alive...i suppose. Being overconfident in striking lightning twice and just expecting people to pick it up was stupid. People like to claim they only buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games and that's all that matters but 3rd party support helps. The Wii U situation is beyond terrible.

I honestly don't see how new consoles are supposedly going to fix everything.

I'm expecting Nintendo to try and soften the blow by revising their expectations down every quarter. Normally I love that kind of thing but it's at a point where I'd take very little pleasure in making such a prediction. It's like finding out a pet is dying.
Numbers like this do put me off buying a Vita. Plus is a great reason to buy but numbers like this don't instill any hope that the purchase will pay dividends after Tearaway comes out.

Given that Nintendo has somehow managed to botch both of their major hardware releases in the past few years (3DS and Wii U) I have to ask, in the first 6 months since launch is the Wii U actually performing worse than the 3DS when it first released?

Can't see it breaking 100k until Pikmin 3 arrives. The pressure for them to finish that game must be unbearable. At least they have Animal Crossing next month to take the heat off.
Pikmin 3 won't even be that big of a seller if prior games are any indication. Nintendo seems completely fucked until October or November when they release bigger games (eg. Mario, Mario Kart, Retro's game). Even then, that still has the possibility to not raise sales of the Wii U. These Wii U numbers post-launch are historically bad. A 3DS revival is seeming more and more unlikely as the months move on.

Anyone remember that crazy guy in the January NPD thread saying that it'd be impossible to judge the future sales of the console despite everyone already knowing the wasteland of the line up. He should chime in here, lol.

At some point they should stop tracking the vita. Without a massive price drop (i mean $100) that system is done.

Not "gaf dead", but seriously dead and removed from store shelves.

NPD tracks everything, but I'm pretty sure the PS2 was still selling more than this when they stopped reporting those sales.

Not sure why people are dissing 50k. There's nothing wrong with it. Just because it sold less than 100k doesn't mean it's not doing well. It's doing as well as we had predicted.

Vita and Wii U both totally misjudged the market. We could all see this coming a mile away.

That's pretty true. I remember when the Wii U was announced thinking it was going to tank.... but I honestly didn't think it would tank this badly.

I really do wonder how PS4 and Xbox 3 are going to do at this point. Obviously not as bad as the Wii U or Vita but we could be looking at a massive contraction of the console market in the next few years.

The Wii U is fine, no need to worry.

What? I said it's fine. Plenty of good games will come out and save it.

IT'S FINE! WE'VE GOT PIKMIN 3 AND A DISNEY GAME I DON'T REMEMBER THE NAME OF COMING OUT IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS! SALES WILL SKY ROCKET!

PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE ROTTING CARCASS CURRENTLY SITTING BEHIND ME! THE WII U IS FINE!

Well, it certainly should be ahead of systems like the Saturn and Turbografx/PC Engine CD... certainly destroys the US Turbo/PCE CD, that sold like maybe 100,000 total (CD+Duo combined). Saturn only sold 9.5 million worldwide, maybe 2 million in the US total, so its sales were slow too. On that note, Sega went from 20-something million Genesises in the US, to 2 million Saturns. You can have a massive collapse.

You also see that in Atari, going from the 7800 (which actually sold okay) to the disappointing Lynx and very badly selling Jaguar. And as for the 3DO and Jaguar, the 3DO sold a couple million max worldwide, while the Jaguar sold 250,000 total, about half of those on clearance after it was discontinued. The Jaguar CD probably sold only one shipment of 20,000.

For a more positive situation though, it took a couple of years before the Genesis started selling well. Sure, in 1989-1990 in the US the Genesis beat the other new system, the TG16 (even though the TG16 had better games), no question, but its sales weren't great, not until Sonic in 1991 (EA Sports was 1991 too, but Sonic was the initial hit of course.).

However, every generation, of course, has sold more total systems than the one before, so just comparing raw numbers isn't entirely helpful, because of how that leaves out that the market is larger now than it was then.
Well, like someone said, out of the consoles you listed the Saturn would be the most interest comparison. I was interested in platform that at least had some market presence or awareness. Sega, Sony and MS platforms.

Well comparing raw numbers is at least interesting, like you said even with a smaller market and with the red hot PS2 dominating, the GC so far is putting better NUmbers than Zombi U.

Hey man! NPD doesn't track Digital sales, the majority of Wii U sold this month were downloaded.
Gahiggidy is telling me NPD forgot to include numbers from GameCube Hut again.

Someone please confirm.
Is GameCube HUt like 90% of the U.S. maket. I think he's on to something.

Why is Sony not doing anything about the price? Holy fuck do they not care, lol.

Same reason why Nintendo isn't dropping the price on the WiiU. It needs fucking games if they want to have a lasting effect from the pricedrop. As long there isn't a healthy stream of releases the pricedrop would only result in a temporary spike.

So that puts Wii U at 35 or so.

Wow. Well deserved I say.

I also have zero faith in them realising that Pikmin, W101 and a Zelda remake are not enough to resuscitate the machine. In fact tend to think even a 3D Mario won't really do a lot over the long term. Unless they can drastically up their output, enhance their OS, get the VC rolling along fast AND get the big third party games like coming out they're in even more serious trouble.

Where is the VitaGaf defence force? Please spin this into something positive my head hurts and my Vita is getting scared.

Gamasutra.
Not sure if final numbers are in. Here's my shot in the dark.

Xbox 360 = 130K
PS3 = 102K
Wii U = 38K
3DS = 100K
NDS = 60K
Wii = 42K
PSV = 15K
PS2 + PSP = 7K

This gives you 494K (about 38% down from March 2013) and an estimated $108mm (compared with $109.5mm reported by NPD) in hardware revenue using the last known hardware average prices.

I put the Wii U higher, because I thought lower ASPs on the other platforms would make the hardware revenue figure difficult to achieve without pushing unit figures out of reasonable ranges. But there's a lot of slop in there.

if they dump 50k and see 160k through to the end, they might be able to combine the two somehow. a hybrid 105k might do the trick.

Here are months 3-6 for the 3DS:

Nintendo 3DS - 97K
3DS - 143,000
Nintendo 3DS: Lower weekly average than last month, meaning at best 114K, but it could be quite a bit lower.
3DS: Above 170K (last month minimum * 1.36 due to 36% increase from Nintendo PR), below 235K (last year). It is likely notably closer to 170K given Nintendo gave a specific percentage.

3DS in August is like three months of Wii U sales.

At this point the portable hardware market is headed towards complete ruins outside of a few Nintendo hits. Relaunching Vita would be a waste of money.

Some stores have basically already stopped carrying the Vita. It barely exists in the Targets and Walmarts near me. Target also had no recent games at all making me wonder if they stopped ordering.

I do have to admit, the Vita and WiiU has completely cratered, but the PS360 also had a less-than-spectacular month, we don't know how the DS & the 3DS did, and I can't help but feel that the market is dying and new consoles won't save it.

Is this the worst hardware month in recent memory? This is pretty brutal.
I still think the two next-gen consoles are going to do just fine.

I thought Wii U would bomb from the second I saw it.

Vita I thought was an excellent handheld system but misjudged the market. There was a chance the graphics could make it stand out, but realistically the only market for handheld gaming now is kids too young to get an iPhone, poor people or super hardcore gamers, and the games on Vita don't do a great job of selling to that market because they're inferior versions of games they already own.
