EDIT: Oh God damn it, it was right there on the front page...

I mean wow...

With no support from Electronic Arts, the Wii U just experienced its Dreamcast moment. Will other publishers now follow suit?

We're not officially allowed to report sales numbers from Chart Track in the UK but everyone in the publishing business can see them quite clearly. There's no need for pretence. When you can get to number one in the Wii U charts by selling less than 1000 units it's no longer a tragedy, it's an actual farce.

Retailers have given up on the Wii U. It's not discounted at the supermarkets because they want to sell more, it's been cut in price so they can get rid of it quickly.

Nintendo can't compete with Microsoft and Sony, that's why they've pulled out of the E3 pissing contest. That's almost a dignified admission of defeat. If Nintendo shows off new Starfox, Zelda, Mario and Blast Corps titles next month in L.A. it's only going to be preaching to the converted. They will be drowned out by the bombast and great swinging balls of their rivals. What will the LA Times, Reuters, the BBC, Tech Crunch, Joystiq, VentureBeat, GamesIndustry International, Gamasutra and the rest of the media be prioritising during E3? Anything that can lift the console business up off its knees and give it an adrenaline shot. That's the real story here, and the Wii U is a boxout of what went wrong.

There's also today's announcement that Sega is handing publishing duties of Sonic the Hedgehog over to Nintendo, like Sonic the Hedgehog still means something to the games player. It doesn't, it's a tired old mascot who jumped the shark when Sega painted him black and gave him a gun.

First, them saying Nintendo pulled out of E3 is because they know they couldn't compete with Sony and Microsoft is just wow worthy.

Second I can't trust everything Game Industry says, they also said the Wii U was weaker than PS3/360 from "anonymous sources".

That was a report on a rumor. This is a prediction/summary of impact based on actual things that just happened.

This is just straight up venomous. Wow.

Nintendo, please turn this around. I like your output far too much to watch yourself get Sega'd. (RIP SEGA)

Eh... Wow. I did not know the Wii U was doing this bad.

Holy shit, that vitriol. I love it.

Wow.

I feel there's a 50/50 chance between a 3DS-type-phoenix-from-the-ashes resurgence, and a console that's effectively dead in 3 years.

Either way, Nintendo will probably survive this, and I don't regret my purchase. But too bad for WiiU owners that like EA games, I guess.

Do you think Nintendo can just write off the Wii U as a sunk cost?

If they can, they might be able to get the upper hand by developing the first proper full blown VR console.

Drop it 2 years into the new cycle with a PC style internals similar to the other two, but with much better specs suitable for VR use... and BAM. Uppercut to Sony and MS.

they actually re-organized my wal-mart video game layout and wii u is second from the front to xbox. vita/ps3 in the corner. it's out in front on at target as well. i don't think the retailer situation is that venomous over here in the US, i can believe it in the EU.

So I guess GI.biz publishes summaries of GAF hyperbole and opinion now?

The bits about Nintendo going this party being their only method of survival and totally dismissing the Sonic brand were like homages to this place.

This deal is Sega begrudgingly admitting it can no longer market and sell kids games, and its last hope in a world of Moshi Monsters and Angry Birds is Nintendo.

Haha wow, that dude is calling Sonic out. He can fuck off. He's right, I doubt Sonic will move tons of consoles, but he can still fuck off.

Wow sounds like someone who was just really waiting to stick it to em with so much venom and pot shots its not even funny. Sonic a worthless mascot now, Nintendo dead and buried, no one cares about anything they announce at E3?

Wow.

The more I think of it, the more I am slowly beginning to accept that Wii U is going to be a 3 - 4 year run console. Even if Nintendo makes all the right moves from E3 forward consistently and aggressively, the "rot" has set in with its perception. Better to just continue making those correct moves (embracing indies and online with the latter getting prioritizes immediately, partnerships on popular but not God Tier franchises for enough of a steady stream of games to make Wii U a good complimentary purchase), maintain the pull of their properties and franchises and plan for something more "relevant" to the current gaming climate ASAP.

Looking forward to seeing the Nintendo hardcore apologist talk their way out of this.

The truth lies somewhere between this guy's blind vitriol and the fanboy belief that Mario Kart and 3D Mario will save the Wii U.

Basing an article on actual facts is somehow venomous?

Article reads like a forum post.

And if Nintendo can't sell another company's mascot, well, Sega is now prioritising PC gaming anyway.

Really?

Create bad article about nintendo. Wait for clicks. Profit.

And you'll all have a read and make them money.

People wonder why games journalism is in a bad way....

Yeah the media is in no way biased against Nintendo. Seriously, the Wii U is in trouble, but this "article" just shows how ignorant a lot of the press is when it comes to both Nintendo in particular and the industry in general.
