Any GAFers Want to Talk about Old Games on a Podcast?

Nostalgia: (def) a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition

I love talking about old videogames that I grew up playing with people. 2600, NES, SNES, N64, Sega Game Gear, Genesis/Mega Drive, 32X/CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation 1. What I like to bring up most was the memories people have when they first experienced a certain game, console, or an introduction to a franchise. The same could be said for what it is like visiting these games for the first time 10, 15, 20, or even 30 years after they were initially released. Is that magic timeless?

Along with that the relationships these games had to your everyday life or how they coincided with major events in your life, such as becoming friends with the kid down that street that had a Genesis when all you knew was the SNES or how you and your family member that usually never played games got surprised you with their addiction to Dr. Mario or Sonic 2.

I think this could lead to an interesting discussion on skype.

And before people start posting, "This is just Retronaughts" or insert podcast talking about classic games. Yeah you are right. But I think we can put an interesting twist on it and provided some diverse experiences from our past. Not everyone is going to have the same insights and history with a given topic.

Here is my idea:

3 or 4 of us connect through skype and discuss just 1 game (i.e. Mega Man 2) or event (When we got a new console) per episode. Talk about our first experience with the game and the other memories of our life outside of the game during the time we played it. Perhaps one person will be someone who just recently played the game for the first time to see if it still holds up and reproduces some of the memories the other hosts have.

People would just need to show up:

I have recorded over 400 hours of podcasts (about 280 episodes) over the last 7 years and currently host one that averages between 10,000-15,000 downloads per episode. I know what I am doing. I would make a post in this thread saying the next episode will be about, "Blaster Master." The goal would be for everyone to replay it the week leading up to the recording so the game is fresh in everyone's minds. The guest would need decent mics/headsets and a good internet connection for skype. I will handle the editing, the hosting, etc.

The working title I have in my mind is, "Co-Op Nostalgia" (I think the word Nostalgia should be in the title).

Hopefully some of you are interested, it would be really cool to give something back to this community for how awesome it has been to me. If you are interested, let me know in the thread. We could get something put together as soon as next week to do a trial run. I will announce a game and we will go from there for picking the people who will be on the recording.

Either way, thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts and considering the possibility.

-Kevin

Edit: I think we should start with an easy topic: The Legend of Zelda on the NES/Famicom.

I'm up for it. Only stuff I don't know anything about is the pre-Famicom stuff, so I can probably talk intelligently about most things.

Been gaming since the 2600, and have some fond memories through the generations. Never used Skype though. Might have to download it and give it a shot

Cool will keep it in mind.

Only if I could shamelessly plug my own podcast. I'm a lot of things, and one of them is a whore.

Of course.

I'd love to hear this.

Kevin, what's your current podcast?

http://thefitcast.com

Usually float in the top 15-20 of all fitness and nutrition podcasts on iTunes.

I'd be interested even if only from a listening point of view. The SNES was what got me started on gaming, along with the original Game Boy, oh memories.

I'm guessing you're more interested on the personal memory than the game itself...?

My idea would be to do

5-10 minutes on the history of the game such as:

  • release date
  • anything special about the game cart's design (battery save, MMC3 chip, size of the Rom)
  • The publics reaction/reviews of the game when it originally came out

20-30 minutes for everyone's nostalgic memories of the game.

10-30 minutes about what it was like going back to the game (with the plan to have everyone replay the game a bit before recording). And new observations or things that stuck out.

Edit:
I also thing it would be interesting on how to best access the game today. Track down a cart? Virtual Console? Best on a specific console? Etc...

Then a wrap up with some final thoughts of the game and it's impact on everyone's gaming history/tastes.

Sadly can't participate on the LoZ episode, as I managed to somehow not play a Zelda game until LTTP, even though I was old enough when the game released.

I have the mic and Internet connection to participate in future episodes, though.

Cool, hopefully 2 or 3 people will step up to jump on the first one.

I am actually surprised there isn't more interest.

I'm completely down for this. I've been on podcasts before, and I work as a gaming journalist so I know my videogames. I also have a quality mic and internet connection.

I'm game.

never played LoZ myself. only watched someone play some of it as a kid. so no real memories for me to join in.

Maybe you can talk about playing it outside of it's release. Any chance you can play through it in the next week on VC or picking up a cart?

Sure, I have it on 3DS as an ambassador.

I will be traveling with my daughter next week, though. What day do you think we would record? I would need to make sure I was near a solid Internet connection.

Great, want to get in on the Zelda episode?

I can be available depending on when you intend of doing it. My connection hasn't been great as of of late though.

Would it be too early to do it this Sunday at 4pm est?

I unfortunately won't be able to participate in the first episode. On Sunday I'm leaving for E3 and will be there until Friday.

Can I have dibs on a Chrono Trigger / Chrono Cross episode if there ever is one. I can talk all day about those two games. They have had a very powerful effect on me.

For sure, as long as you have a good mic setup. I have never gotten more than 4-5 hours into the game. It would give me good reason to finally play through it on the DS.

You see that would be a great starting point. You could explain why you reached a certain point and quit and how you felt about it at that time. Then fully play the game and share how your thoughts changed or how you felt about the game have changed and us long time fans can share our experiances that we have had and compare them.

There are so many starting points into that game I could go from. Like you mentioned how you will be playing on the DS for the first time and how I have played on the SNES the first time. Because I feel the tone and spirit of the original translation is so much better than the more accurate canon translation. We could have played the same scene on the first go around and felt completely different about it because of certain differences. Good or bad. That would be one idea topic.

Another interesting idea would be if you could find a big hater of the game and mix them up with some of the supporters and talk about different view points. One of the most memorable discussions (not from a podcast) was I think Gametrailers or IGN or somebody had a roundtable discussion on Resident Evil 6. It was really interesting to hear how several people had extraordinarily different viewpoints about certain contexts of the game.

That's what I was thinking. Make sure at least one of the panelists was an, "expert" on the game being discussed and at least one that played the game out of it's time.

I would be down with this! I have been gaming since I was about 5...which would be 28 years ago, so this is right up my "Hogan's Alley".

Damn, that was a horrible pun.

I would also suggest that other selections of games besides obvious ones like Zelda , CT, Mario, Metroid, Crash, Halo ect. would be to find a retro game or series that isn't that well known but has a following in it's own right. Something like for example I remember a month or two ago somebody did a lltp thread about an old SNES/Genesis game called Muay Malliard or something. It was a sudo Donald Duck esque game that was a Kung Fu platformer or something. The topic for a old forgotten game (even when it was releaseed) got like three or four pages of discussion on how great the game was and how it was sent to die on releases and it's history and all that. This would make for interesting discussion. From a new players perspective and for someone who was very familiar with it.

On the flipside and more popular idea would be to pick a retro game that some have followed but has a re-release coming out or even a sequel. For example playing Kid Icarus before Kid Icarus 3DS. Or an example now would be the Ace Attorney series as it just got a new re-release on IOs and AA5 coming out this year. Some people don't even know these games started as Game Boy Advance games. And with current updates you might get more listeners because they also maybe replaying them or are on the hype train.

Just ideas for ya.

There is a podcast like this... A brazilian one 99 vidas -> 99 lifes

They dedicate a big game for episode, some episodes 2 games, and 4 when talking about a genre, and another type of episode is 99vidas life style about life as a 80 90's kids
they do this for almost 4 years

I plan on it, I just want to start with something familiar to get the ball rolling so there are enough people that can participate.

I'd like to be in on this. I didn't play at launch (I'm only 23) but when I was like 6 my neighbor and I went through this game, paper maps and the whole 9 yards

What do you guys think about the name?

some ideas:

  • Co-Op Nostalgia
  • Co-Op Time Machine
  • Game Memories
  • Back to the Video Game
  • Video Game Time Machine
  • Back in my Play

I honestly don't care for any of them to be honest. The co-ops sound like multiplayer focuses to the casual reader. Game Memories, Back to the Video Game wouldn't make to sense to the person or persons playing for the first time. Video Game Time Machine kinda sounds a little silly to me and Back in my Play sounds a little awkward.

Retronaughts is a great name because it's fun to say and is unique. Make something up that doesn't mean anything but kinda gets the point across.

Or you could do something simple like Let's Talk (Insert Game)

But if you wanna have more of a weekly show then I guess your style could work. Something like Video Game Rountable ep 1. Or something to that effect.

Good points. Will have to think abou it.

This sounds interesting. I only really talk or think about older games when I do talk about games for fun, so this would be nice to hear. And I do have fond memories of Zelda and 2.

You fit the requirements listed above?

Meant your fitness podcast, sorry if I didn't make that clear. :)
Would be fun to appear as a guest on this retro podcast of yours though, I've been podcasting myself for about 5-6 years. I have a fast internet connection and better recording equipment than most people, probably. Unfortunately English isn't my first language, so I'm not sure I would be able to express myself well enough.

Sorry man, don't know what happened there, didn't mean to quote you.

I'd certainly be interested in appearing on it. I love talking about old games. Mainly because I never really played that many pre playstation until relatively recently. I had a c64, nes, snes and megadrive but I was just too young to actually have an opinion on a games quality and just played the trash.

If there is Zelda talk going on, please consider me, it is my all time favorite franchise. I have participated in some podcasts that tried getting off the ground but never could pick up steam due to the person in charge not taking the right steps to promote it.

I am 100% in if I am needed.
