Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

its nice to know i'll be able to sell my game, if i go to the approved retailer and the publisher so deems it...

all i read here is a market for used games with publishers who will play nice. which will be first party titles annnnd... can't wait to see them publisher fees at the retailer level either!

the family account system needs more details. there has to be a catch somewhere, its never as easy as you think.

i love that pubs also have the ability stop you from loaning, and oh, its not available at launch, grey space.

MS is just throwing the ball to pubs to answer questions. quick, someone email every publisher and lets form a score chart, who will allow trade ins, at what addition fee/if any, if loaning is allowed. x) sounds easy enough.

mess.

Why are people getting so knotted up about this? It is basically Steam but with stricter online requirements (24 hour check) and the ability to actually trade your games. We've been doing this for years now, welcome to the digital age people.
Because people don't like change. And the people who have the biggest problem with it will be the most vocal. I'm still excited about no discs yay!

So basically, if microsoft turns off the servers when Xbox Two is out, then this entire generation of games is wiped out permanently?

more likely is this is all an attempt to FINALLY future proof console eco-system... they are running all the games on a VM so whenever they upgrade or if they make other devices compatible to X1 games, they will now go Forward with us and be able to play on new systems like a phone app

I, for one, am shocked that you're in favor of this.

SHOCKED.

I've always made it clear that I don't give a shit about buying used games, because I don't buy them. My main concern was friends and family being able to borrow and play my games. Sounds like Xbox One supports that just fine.

Why would I be mad? I also don't give a shit about a 24 hour internet check. I have had solid internet providers that have been close to 100% reliable for well over 10 years straight, only ever losing access to the internet in those rare cases where there are widespread power outages, which are also rare. I wouldn't be able to play my console during a power outage anyway, and Xbox Live has been pretty reliable since I've had a 360. There have only been those rare moments where for a few hours you couldn't actually access live, but guess what? With people still being able to play offline for up to 24 hours, even if xbox live goes down, so long as it isn't down for an entire 24 hours, you're protected and can still play all your games. It seems reasonable to me, but you can disagree, that's fine.

My idea of the used games market is giving away games I no longer want. I don't go to Gamestops to trade them in and get cash for them. Games I no longer want either collect dust, or go to family and friends that want them. Literally up to 10 family (friends AND family) members can access and play any of the games that I've shared on my live account. That easily solves my biggest concern about the Xbox One. It was an issue I was prepared to deal with and accept because I wanted Xbox One for the games, but it's even sweeter that I no longer have to worry about a complete blocking of allowing friends or family to play my games. You don't have to like or accept my opinion, but I'm not conforming to anyone else's line of thinking but my own. You make your decisions about what you want to spend your money on, and I'll make my own decision, thank you very much.

See, because I actually plan on buying this thing, and have always planned on giving it a fair shot, I'm genuinely thinking about what all these policies mean FOR ME, and trying to understand them as best I can. However, for a lot of other people, there just seems to be a desire to troll as much as possible. There are people spouting nonsense in this thread that the information on that website clearly debunks. It showcases that they either haven't read it properly, or simply don't give a shit. That's not my problem.

I don't mind the internet connection requirement .. but it's a bummer about the used games. I like to sell my games on eBay to pay for future games..

Not shocked to be honest but policies like this are the death nail in indie game stores which are already getting screwed left right and centre by retailer exclusives and etailers.

I know a lot of folks are saying this doesn't effect them but I for one can not support any company, Microsoft or Sony, that want's to promote this as a practice whether it effects me or not.

I totally agree! If hope we all enjoy only being able to buy games from big-box stores now. Indie shops will really hurt because of this.

I rather have this than steam. Steam you can't even share games.

Lets be honest here most of our Steam libraries are made up of games we got on big sales. Even a brand new game like Bioshock Infinite came with Xcom for free when you preordered it. Console games are all $70 and never get anything extra and you never see these games go for 70% off. We don't care about our steam library because we get most of those games for pocket change.

Why is everyone ignoring the family member thing? Who gives a fuck that you can't lend games when you can let "family members" winkwink, play it? Am I missing something?

Is it not on the same piece of hardware? I assumed they mean you can play up to 10 separate gamer tags in one game on one XB1. They are not dumb enough to let ten people play the same game in ten different cities with ten different XB1s,

Adidas entering the console market confirmed?

They say it clearly on their page. You have to connect every 24 hours. But it's okay, you can still watch tv.

You can't be serious right? :p 24 hours checks vs offline indefinitely? None of these options they are proposing serve as any benefit for the customer, it's all benefits to the publisher.

I understand what you mean that on paper it's less restrictive to not check online. Here's the thing though, I've used Steam constantly since it released near Half Life 2, guess how many times I've used the offline feature. 0.

How many times have I been somewhere visiting family or friends and played on their xbox in the same timeframe? Dozens. The level of convenience i'm gaining far outweighs what i'm losing.

A couple of weeks ago I said it wasn't time to get the pitchforks and torches out.

Well...

Sony did it with 5 people.

No they didn't.

The policy was that you can install the game (digital copy) on up to 5 systems at a time.

It was twisted around by gamers, who figured out that 5 systems could mean 5 different gamers.

Sony got wind of it, and then they shrugged and said, "Eh, sure, why not."

Then I think later on, they changed the policy? I have no idea what the policy is now. But officially, it only meant 5 installs (and it was suppose to be your own systems).

So you think Gamestop and etc are just going to have stacks of used X1 games on their shelves? Of course you can purchased used games.

There's no stacks of games. You go in and they revolk your license for the game in question from your account. They don't care about the disc because the disc is worthless at that point because they aren't going to resell it. They revolked your license and the copy of the game license has been wiped from existance which means (in their minds) more people will be buying the game for full price since there is no alternative.

Looks like it.

What a giant load of shit.
Feels sad for everyone who was really looking forward for the new MS plattform.
What a hit in the fucking nuts.

I won't support this, I'll still enjoy my Xbox 360 for years to come though. Time to see Sony's approach on this, they are worryingly silent.

1) Add 10 friends to a shared account
2) Each friend pays $6 for a new game
3) Share as needed
????
4) Profit?

I'm not buying this console though. Maybe in a few years.

this is how I'm interpreting the comments. I feel it's wrong though. It's so open to abuse that surely the software attach rate would take a massive hit? Sony learnt this the hard way with their 5 game share limit....

Something doesn't add up. It's amazing how even this is mired in confusion. Jesus Christ, MS.

The thing is, PS3 right now allows individual publishers to decide what DRM they want to use. PS4 will be exactly the same. Sure, some will do it, but that just gives the consumers the ability to deny publishers sales at the game-by-game basis, which is a highly effective way of sending a message.

Yes but are you likely to know that at the point of sales. The game is hardly likely to have a sticker on it saying 'used games allowed'.

OMG! Can't believe what I'm reading on that Xbox site. 0_0

The Xbone is a real anti-consumer console!

And Kinect is always listening even when you turn it "off"? Screw that shit.

Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

There is no way the Xbone will get a place in my house. Games will not save this console, well, not for me at least.

Except you can't play at the same time. PSN didn't care if all five people played at the same time. So in a way cool, but not as good as PSN.

Good point, I missed the part about one copy can only be active. I was trying to see silver lining, but I guess not. lol

So the most important thing here is you cannot purchase used games. Period. You can "trade-in" your game to select retailers, which really is just revoking the license from your account. But they never mention purchasing used games whatsoever.

You can trade, you can trade-in. You cannot purchase.

#dead

And what's the trade-in going to be worth since GameStop cannot resell it?

About 50 fucking cents if you're lucky since thats what GameStop might get for recycling it.

Its over folks.

Support this shit and you get what you deserve.

No wait.. This whole Family thing is very cleverly worded. You can always play, and one of your family can play "at a given time," what time? Probably if you aren't playing.

So they basically turned sub-names on your XBL account into a hilariously misleading bullet point.

I love that some people on here are happy that their rights are being taken away. You've bought their deception and are like 'wow, i can share my games wooooo'.

Maybe we are to worried about real rights being taking away and not videogame rights lol. Don't buy the system. Problem solved.

I thought it was up to 10 people (accounts) but on the same Xbox? Just being able to give the game to 10 people is pretty sweet.

if used games go away/are lessend dramatically the the pricing model of games needs to evolve, most of the games I buy used I buy ONLY because they are cheap. This new system does not change even one of my used game purchases into a new $60 game purchase. It only shrinks the number of games I will buy each year... assuming I actually buy a next gen console.

I just hope Sony doesn't follow with these kind of policies, or I'm out of next-gen. Almost half the games I have played this gen were borrowed from different friends, and I won't buy a console that doesn't allow me to do that anymore.

This is possibly the most reprehensible product in gaming history, and I won't claim to not view with some contempt anyone who buys one. For the sake of consumers, I hope to god that the #PS4NoDRM campaign actually accomplished something.

Thinking the family thing are those who live at the house your XBONE is registered at.

Trying to appease families but yeah. This thing stinks.

But hey, at least I know I won't buy one. Unplayable here.

So regarding used game sales, from what we know so far:

MS - changed from past gens, blocked used games by default, but publishers can enable them if they want.
Sony - Same as past gens, enabled used games by default, but publishers can block them if they want.

I'm passing on One of these.
