Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Another shitty point: "We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers"

So that means that I'm at the publisher's mercy to be able to use this system in the first place? So EA says no I'm stuck with the games for good? Is that it?

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
why have you been a member since 2011 and yet just started posting today?

What hurts the most is that the Xboner is now the most talked about console, and millions of oblivious Call of Dudebroers have no idea why.

Yeeeeep.

I live in Miami Beach and we already have 18 tropical storms announced for the year from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 4 of those expected to become hurricanes and 3 to make landfall. I don't think this console is for me.

lol what kind of shitty internet connection goes down? sounds like you need a better HDMI cable.

Is there anything salvageable out of this mess?

Potential Xbox One Family Account Exploit
---------------------------------------------
- Jerry and Richard link their accounts as family
- Jerry buys action games
- Richard buys RPG games
- (Jerry and Richard become the "Prime Family Member" if you like - the one that can play anytime.)
- They both have access to each other's accounts
- They can split game costs with some organisation

Is this possible? I mean, I won't buy one, but maybe that's an exploit people can use.

God, I can only imagine the mess that will be how this all plays out in territories that aren't the US, when you get into thing like participating retailers, etc.

It's even worse, because you could only trade it in to a participating retailer aka only GameStop. Kiss mom and pop game stores goodbye.

It's 100% true. I just tried to sell a handful of games to Gamestop about 2 months ago, for the first time in years. They wanted to give me next to nothing, like $1 for Arkham Asylum, and so on.

I took the exact same stack down the street to my local store and got 5x as much for it, and they're a small local shop and not a franchise.
But he has a point. Generally I used to use Amazon for the best individual trade in values.

However, if I had a bunch of 3 year old, worthless games, there would be a Gamestop deal like trade in 5, get an extra $50. So for me it was never a matter of using Gamestop for games I could get good money for elsewhere. Gamestop is a good place to dump worthless games when they have special deals.

This will be so interesting when they talk about worldwide markets. I imagine alot of the policies are not applicable/possible in the different regions.

The whole thing seems like a mess and it will be a big headache to sort out for MS. Also, imagine if their server crashes or possibly get hacked. Then what.

I feel like Microsoft just "red weddinged" us.

Was thinking the samething! lol!

For the love of god sony please don't do this. We buy the games, we should be able to do anything we want with them. And i feel sorry for the people who don't have internet connections. Or poor ones. Especially in other countries. But hey, why on earth would i live there?

Playing devil's advocate, because I hate to see the overreaction:

-I can almost guarantee they will work out rental deals with redbox, blockbuster, gamefly, etc. They would be foolish to leave money on the table.

-Put a piece of tape over the kinect sensor if you don't want MS to see you in your underwear. It's not like they'll be recording you on some server. relax.

-24 hours of offline play: If your internet is down for more than 24 hours get a new provider. My PC is always online and that's where I game the most. You're not taking the xbox out of your house to go camping so what is the problem?

-You can still trade a game to a friend. Once it's theirs, who cares what happens to it next. And there will still be avenues to sell your games. Amazon, gamestop, CeX... they'll all be there.

-Sharing all your games among 10 people = amazing. I can see 10 of my gaming friends and I working out a system of who buys what. That's 9 less games we each have to buy. Makes up for the lack of trade-in.

- How you can guarantee that, when they can't even do it.

- Why ppl need to go over the hassle of using a piece of tape on his Kinect everytime they don't want to be seen or heard?

- You can trade a game...if publisher allow it. And maybe he wants to trade it again?

- Why do you think they said family?. Only accounts registered on the Xbone that "owns" the game can play those games on that console. There's no way is gonna work like you think.

I'm not surprised that GameStop appreciates Microsoft's gift. Killing GameStop's competition is quite a task.

Yep now GameStop can set the price as low as they want for trades..

"We'll give you 2$ for that game released yesterday.. take it or leave it bitch." -GameStop

Maybe that was the plan all along? LOL

Spread rumors about how terrible it was actually going to be, then scale back a bit so it looks better than it really is.

Lol, I was thinking the same thing about the Wii U's slow OS when they released the last update!!!

IT'S A CONSPIRACYYYYY!!!

they claim they aint getting a fee on those resells, so what exactly is the point of partecipating retailers? What do they gain from it?

I'm curious about Microsoft's strategy behind their decision to require an online connection for the system to function. Presumably they sold a lot of Arcade 360's (and probably regular systems) to people who did not then take them online, and they are forfeiting that market to the PS4 now.

Their business model must make up for that loss somehow (I'm guessing through used game transaction revenues to kick in later in the system's life, among other services). Really interested what share of their 360 player base never went online.

The publishers get a fee. Microsoft themselves are a publisher. As a platform holder, they wouldn't be getting one, but as a publisher, they can.

I just realized this thread has already passed the MS E3 thread in both post count and viewers. This thread has only been up for a little more then 4 hours. Amazing.

Of all the entertainment options (movies, music, books, video games), video games have the highest average cost for a new purchase. Now, Microsoft wants to make it even harder to get money back in return if you are no longer satisfied. No renting ahead of time, very limited options on selling your games, and most likely, $60 to buy a "used" game that cannot be sold again because it can only be sold once.

I'm out.

I see that having potential. Once one person finishes a game the other can take over and vice versa. I wonder how Microsoft will combat this.

You know what happened to that?

You can STILL authorize MSN music WMA files. To this day

yea long term I think their strategy is for Xbox ONE and on that any software you buy becomes part of the eco system and will live on so long as the brand does and in the future these games will be playable on your PC or tablet with the same license... I think this is an attempt to future-Proof software ownership digitally on their eco system so people stay invested.

again I think it's the main reason the games will all run in VM so they can be run on any future machine that is powerful enough to run it

Since "selling" a used game at a participating retailer isn't really selling anymore, and will probably just be a de-authorization of the license, I wonder who will set the price. I can definitely envision a situation where the "trade-in" price is set by the publisher (instead of the retailer as it is today), and the retailer is just paid a fee for facilitating the transaction.

For example AAA game X is mandated by Publisher Y to have a trade-in value of $15, every participating retailer offers $15 for it, and then they receive a $2 fee or whatever from the publisher for performing the transaction.

Another gaming crash is in order. I am hoping it happens. We don't have to take all this BS from companies. If Sony follows suit, PS3 will be my last console, ill definitely jump to the PC because at least I will save some $$$

Ugh. Honestly, this is turning out to be even worse than the "$599 U.S. Dollars" debacle with PS3.

Microsoft's arrogance is definitely following through, since they assume that gamers will put up with bullshit like this & will still buy it "because it's Xbox."

The 3rd console curse strikes again, people.
