Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Who are those people that are saying that this is not as bad as they thought it was going to be?!

You can't rent/lend games. You have to be connected to the internet. The only option that you have is to give a game to a friend, but I doubt many people would do this. If you ever decide that you want to play that game again you would have to buy it again.

Possible trade in option might be a good news for some (Personally I believe that trading in is a scam). But keep in mind that Gamestop will have more rights now. That disc that you will be trading in will be unusable anywhere else, so they potentially could just give you $5 for that game and feel like you should be thanking them...

Those are people that always buy their games new, never sell them and have no friends they ever trade games with, and since it's no problem for them thay'll fork over that cash to MS with a shit-eating grin on their face

At this point I really don't want MS to change courses on this. They must release this in all it's restrictive glory! Then we can see just how well this sells. Then we can see just how much the outcry is the voice of the consumer.

I would never buy one or even accept one as a gift but I bet this thing will still sell. And that's what hurts the most.

This is insane. My Xbox live account got hacked last year, and to get my money back the idiots as MS customer service reset my account. I lost all of my friends, achievements, DLC etc... Had this happened with the xbone i would have lost every single game i have ever purchased for the console. MS better seriously fix their flawed account systems before they implement this or there will be serious customer service issues.

This.

Honestly I think this sounds pretty cool, under this model I'll probably end up actually playing MORE of my friends and families games than I do today.

I'll be buying all my games digitally anyways so the used game thing means nothing to me, nothing Microsoft can say will make Gaf happy so that's pretty much a foregone conclusion........based on my usage patterns this setup sounds VERY reasonable with a lot of advantages.

I have a funny feeling you don't fully understand these policies.

Here's what I'm pondering.

Microsoft certainly isn't targeting children with most of their library (speculation as I haven't seen any lineups yet and E3 is around the corner)

I would imagine most parents absolutely hating this system, and paying for all the transactions, the difficulties of doing the more basic things previous generations afforded.
In this, perhaps many returns will be made of this console, and imagine the cluster of going through all of that.

So if we then look at hardcore gamer, I would imagine most are not looking forward to this, but on the other hand just seeing the defenses around the board since this news dropped, I'm not so sure.

I really feel like this is a precipice for video gaming, and Microsoft's target audience really needs to stand firm and not eat up whatever they show off this E3. The flesh is weak, but on principle and consumer rights people need to stand strong here. I really just don't buy the whole supposed technological advantages of their platform and cloud, and it's really just ridiculous to play video games. IF you actually enjoy playing video games, buy a console that is only going to focus on that, and that is going to cater to that experience alone.

Apologies if this has been discussed, but why a 24 hour check for your console, but a one hour check for other people's?

Are they trying to crack down on people going round to a friend's house logging someone in on their account and then pulling the net connection so they would get 24 hours to play a game they didn't own and the person who did own it could go home and play too?

Are they really that tight fisted?

Microsoft made a good point about using cellular connections when broadband is not available. Granted I'm thinking from a US perspective but pretty much every smartphone has tethering/wifi hotspot capabilities these days. They could be used for the check required every 24 hours.

We've heard from CBoaT and others that this was originally worse and then scaled back. So I believe that.

Yeah on tweet of some journo said that this was better than he expected. Probably selling to 30 day friend was not on list also it was changed from always online to 24h check

My debit card associated with my XBL account expires the month before my Live is scheduled to renew, so fuck you and your shitty customer service, MS because I don't have to call you just so you can give me the runaround.

Could the "up to ten family members" mean Kinect will actively track who's playing the game and only allow ten distinct individuals?

I'm pretty sure the idea has been riffed as hyperbolic humor before, but I wouldn't put it past Microsoft.

Except the best networks has data caps now. So you get double screwed when you go over your cap! Its a win win!

Yeah because anyone would really want to use up the very limited data cap they give these days for a daily DRM check. It is not going to be a ping it will be the servers checking all your games to see if they are the same as listed on their end.

Or your account gets hacked and all of your games are given away as gifts.

Best case scenario for the PS4 is that they have offline passes at this point. Which forces you to get online ONCE to enter the pass and then you can play offline whenever.

I mean, that's certainly better than potentially losing access to your games if your internet connection crashes for over 24 hours, but in terms of how it actually affects the consumer its essentially a virtual match to MS's policy.

Yay data caps, let's bring that into the discussion. Nothing like bringing up controversial subjects when trying to talk around another one…

Some providers have this feature locked out unless you pay for a "tethering plan."

Best case is for offline play they use the disc as verification. That is what MS should of done and could of avoided some of this shit storm.

I have no mobile phone signal at all where I live on any network. I rely on our landline. When I moved here, we were without internet for three weeks whilst Sky set up broadband at our house.

If I had the Xbox one during that period, would I have been able to play it? No. Not for almost a fucking month. It's absolutely, utterly indefensible and there's no way you can spin it otherwise.

How is that best case scenario? Especially since they've already said that it's possible to never log your PS4 into the Internet to be able to game on it.

Not everyone has a smart phone, or even internet connection.

I have probably 4-5 friends(and then another 5-6 family members maybe) that actually play games, as long as I can add them all as "family" we'll be able to share all of our games.

No idea how this can be interpreted as "bad" but we need more info on who you can add as "family" and what the stipulations are.

Also they need to announce the digital version for 10$ less than the physical releases.......at that point this is even abetter setup than steam but of gaf will never admit to that.

This "fuck the industry as long as I get my cheap used game" montra is sad......quit being poor gaf

I don't think it would be that bad. I would think as soon as you power the system on, it does a quick check and then you can disconnect. I get the concern over data caps but be realistic, how much data would comparing a list take up? A couple meg max I would bet

Actually this might have been a good option. They should have included so sort of cellular modem in every console with limited free internet access (like kindle for example). That way it at least would have looked like they put some thought into this "Plan".

Personally I would have hated it anyway, but my perception of MIcrosoft would be a bit different :)

I don't think you can share the games, they can just play it on the console where the person that owns the game is the main account.

Sony can win the next generation in about 10 seconds at E3. But we all know they won't say:

"The PlayStation 4 will allow you to trade, loan, sell, or buy games from anyone without any stipulations of any kind. Publishers will not be permitted to release games on PlayStation 4 with DRM transfer fees or user licenses. The PlayStation 4 does not require an internet connection of any kind to play any of the games you purchase."

You really think EA or Activision are going to NOT release FIFA and CoD on PS4 under any circumstances?

Which console do you think GameStop would trumpet for the next 6-7 years?

I for one and extremely thankful that Microsoft is kind enough to allow me the privilege to be able to sell my used games*

*once, to participating retailers, as long as the publisher allows it as well.

Very excited to hear that this console isn't always online* either!

*must be online at least once every 24 hours.

I know I'm not the only one who is excited to pay for Xbox Live Gold next year.

Whoa whoa WHOA!!! DID YOU CHECK WITH THE PUBLISHER FIRST?!! Did THEY give you the all clear?! EA's SHAKING THEIR HEAD NO! You puny ANT! What arrogance to assume you can just loan your license out without permission!! Kinect, please send a picture of this person to Microsoft and make sure their Live account is banned.

It will be more than couple of meg. It will send back your entire profile/games/history ect to the server to check. Lets say it is small like 50 meg over 30 days that is 3/4 of the 2gb cap most people have.

You're right about your situation. You wouldn't have been able to use it.

My simple point is that Microsoft was smart to include the idea if using cellular connections. It is a viable last resort for many people including most people that post in this forum I'd argue.

The data required for a check-in would be extremely small.

root/jailbreak you phone if that is the case

Not doubting that, but it's still a stupid tedious thing to bring up to try and excuse the 24 hour check in. Not to mention a lot of providers still require a fee for tethering. I'm still on an unlimited plan that doesn't get tethering. If I wanted tethering I would lose my unlimited data plan and have to go to a cap limit.

And rooting your phone to be able to play your games offline for more than 24 hours is just fucking stupid...

Has anyone here actually read the announcement?

"Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time."

How is this not awesome?

Please allow us to demonstrate how you will be able to share games amongst family and friends with Playstation 4. Another person walks onstage, is handed the disc, and he walks off. That is how you will be able to share games on PS4.

I'd love to see it lol

No way. 1.5mbps is the requirement. That would require a 4 minute check. You're crazy to think it takes much data for simple lists

If Sony says no to DRM, and EA pulls support, how likely is it for Sony to get the MLB guys to make other sports games again? FIFA the Show or NBA the Show.
