Far Cry Classic

Far Cry Classic is the ultimate console version of the very first Far Cry game, bringing you back to the roots of this franchise. It's another beautiful day in tropical paradise...or is it? Take the role of charter boat captain, Jack Carver, who finds himself hunted by an unrelenting team of highly trained mercenaries in this nature-gone-wrong FPS adventure. Choose to rely on firepower, strategy or stealth, abuse your freedom into massive outdoor environments, and fight for your life against tactically intelligent enemies. Features stunningly realistic foliage, real-time day and night cycles, drivable underwater, commandeer, or even flying vehicles, and more...

Game Features

• Single player FPS
• Genre defining Open world system
• Immersive single player story

Magic Moments

• Nostalgia triggered by the iconic environments of the level
• Build-up of the level from the beginning in the sea to the communication tower which ends after killing waves of enemies and the satisfaction that results from it

Apparently playing the exact same game is a feature now.

does the game still turn to shit halfway through

This game is like - the quintessential WHAT THE FUCK game for turning to complete shit halfway through. I really wonder how stuff like that happens in game development. "Hey, we've got this pretty awesome thing going with our AI and open world environments. - LET'S ADD MONSTERS!"

Honorable mention goes out to Indigo Prophecy.

No it was a game of its own I believe, Far Cry Predator Instincts or something like that. It definitely wasn't the Crytek original anyway.

Yup, they changed story and gameplay elements. But Far Cry Instincts and Predator were great actually. Not only did they the nano suit powers before Crysis did it, it also felt like playing Apocalypse Now the Game and LOST in some areas. I really liked both!

The first Far Cry was great, but I'm not hooking my 360 back up just to play it again, no matter how magical the moments.

Never played it, can someone give me context on the halfway fuckup? Monsters? I'm already laughing my ass off.
As far as I'm concerned, it's shit 100% of the way through.

In 2004, the massive environments and impressive jungles were quite eye opening and hinted at what could have been, but the game was let down by piss-poor AI, bad shooting mechanics, and the Tri-gen (monsters). All enemies could spot the player from miles away and all enemies in the scene would know your precise location. There was no gray area with the AI. You were either hidden or completely visible. The jungle was nothing more than set dressing.

When it came time to engage those enemies the actual act of firing your weapon and taking down each foe fell flat. It wasn't fun, it didn't animate particularly well, and it didn't feel good.

Then, about 1/3 of the way through the game, they introduce some of the ugliest monsters you'll ever see that are infinitely less fun to fight and force you to deal with them until the end of the game.

They had amazing technology with poor game design underneath.

Crysis was one of the most dramatic improvements I've seen in gaming as it really IS an incredible shooter (one of my favorites, in fact). They made sweeping changes to everything and the end result was a game that shared very little with the original Far Cry.

For you first time players: get up until you face the trigen and then turn it off. The last few stages are especially shitty and I only finished them using a trainer on the PC.

Mutants made the game better and without them it would have overstayed it's welcome. Truthfact.

I actually think Far Cry was just as impressive if not even more so than HL2 back in the day. Doom 3 being the shitty one out of the tree.

Is that for real? Like, real promo material for the game?

Yup, of the 3 big FPS games of 2004, I think FC impressed me the most visually. That draw distance! Doom 3 was the "meh" of that year, even graphically. HL2 ended up exceeded FC graphically, but that was because the scope was a lot smaller. The open jungles of FC was so hype.

So I wonder what they are aiming for, performance wise. Hopefully either 720/60 or 1080/30. I'm almost certain the 360 can't muster 1080/60 in one of the most demanding games of 2004, but it better not be 720/30. That'd be sad.

I hope not!

This game came out in 2004. I really don't 10 years constitutes a "classic" release, especially in a game like Far Cry. What "nostalgia" is retained in a shooter that adheres to the same formula we've seen in shooters throughout all of last gen?

The nostalgia of the game's quality nosediving a quarter of the way in once you start seeing the first Trigen monkey mutants.

The magic of trying to avoid the five mile radius of the explosions from the rocket armed hulks you see not long after.

wow, still my favourite far cry, by far.
its really a great game with huge maps and surprisingly diverse gameplay.

I really should replay it, is it anywhere on steam or something like that?

I'm currently playing Far Cry 3 and I think it's the best of the series. Maybe I don't remember 1 well, but I'm pretty impressed with FC3 so far.

between this and Fable Anniversary, it's clear that Microsoft continues to invest big $$$ late into the life of its systems contrary to what the critics claim about them abandoning support.

Its systems? That implies more than one.

They dropped Xbox support immediately.

Far Cry isn't exactly coming from MS, though.

Presuming this looks the same as the original did on PC, prepare for a huge shock - it looks terrible. For some reason it didn't age nearly as well as Half-Life 2 or Doom 3.

The Classic doesn't refer to it being a piece of gaming history, the Classic subtitle differentiates it from the Instincts sub-series that were on Xbox and 360.
New Coke and Classic Coke.
