hm, Giant Bomb eh? Even if this true I don't understand how it can be seen as anything other than a complete admission of failure. Fool me once, fuckers.

wouldent this make it impossible for developers to count on the cloud though? If some people are using the cloud, and others are not wouldent that potentially give people different experiences on the same hardware when it comes to game performance?

For a company not scared of Sony and saying they were not going to change anything DRM related, this sure shows otherwise if true.

After a month of defending this shit they're going to be like "LOL JOKES BRO"?

I'll wait for the official word, but I'm not holding my breath. If true, it's better for consumers, but still fucking hilarious. Basically, forget about the last month of Xbox One news.

Wow....

Love to see pr spin this. What a disaster...

That's the easiest thing to spin.

"PR: At MS, we believe in listening to our loyal fans. That is why, as of today, we are dropping the DRM and 24 hour check in for our Xbox One all-in-one entertainment system, available this coming Fall."

I'm still sticking with PS4 but MS will have to come clean with some sort of press conference/round table to talk to the masses.

But, but, but...the VALUE...the too MUCH value! It's cool they are doing this because they want to, not because of SONY or anything.

Remember when we said always online and harsh DRM was actually pro-consumer and necessary to harness the amazing technical power of the cloud? Well, we lied and made all that up. We're going to do the opposite now so it would be great if you could forget our old lies and start believing the new ones about why we switched and contradicted ourselves which we'll be rolling out later today.

they'll take this egg on their face 5 months before launch - that will be forgotten in a couple weeks - and then take in extra sales form consumers not worried about resale rights.

- and then they'll reintroduce all their bullshit? :p

ubelievable...

but i would really hate it if Microsoft now presents themselves as the super gamer friendly.

First remove something that people expect to have, than give it back to them and everybody says your the best, even if the others had it all the way. Don't let this happen Internet!

If it has better games why not?

Something tells me GB wouldnt drop this bombshell unless they were confident in their sources.

Yeah it's not like Giantbomb just throws shit around without sources. I don't remember a time Patrick said in a video that all the big third party publishers are encouraging this or anything...

Microsoft to Pull Complete Reversal on Xbox One DRM Policies

by Patrick Klepek on June 19, 2013

Sources indicate Microsoft is going to move away much of what's caused the company so much headache.

The tug-of-war between Microsoft and Sony just got more interesting. Multiple sources inform me Microsoft will announce what amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One today.

What does this mean?

No more always online requirement
The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
Authentication is no longer necessary
An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
Region locks have been dropped

It is unclear what caused this huge change in policy right after E3, a week where Microsoft executives spent days explaining, justifying, and talking about its policies to the press. I suspect Microsoft’s official announcement will say something to the effect of “we've been closely listening to consumer feedback.”

Based on what I’m being told, that’s definitely true.

I've reached out to Microsoft for comment.

Microsoft has taken an enormous amount of heat regarding DRM policies with its new console. Sony became consumer heroes at E3, announcing PlayStation 4 would not treat used games differently, and the status quo would reign. The company released this video, twisting the knife:

Of course, Xbox One is still $499 and PlayStation 4 is still $399. But today moves the needle.

you speak so well
Excellent news. Still going for the PS4 at launch because it's cheaper and I don't really care about Kinect but I'm much, much more likely to pick an Xbox One up down the line now.
