*******UPDATE********

The latest version of Project Reality, 1.0, will release later this week on Friday, August 2. Players can preload the newest version of the Battlefield 2 modification by following the link provided below.

Feature List.

Project Reality released in 2005 with only a few small differences from the Battlefield 2, however after over seven years of work, the mod has become a different game from its dolphin diving predecessor. With the expected release of the game's 1.0 version sometime within the next three - four months, PR veterans and new comers should expect the pinnacle of online tactical warfare to continue it's dominance as one of the best mods ever made.

Players take on different roles in order to support the team through the use of choosing kits. Some kits like a Heavy Anti-Tank or Sniper kit only allow for a certain amount to be chosen at a given time, while other kits like the Automatic Rifleman or Medic are restricted to players if they're already taken within a player's squad.

Other roles such as a tank gunner, tank driver, and other heavy armored vehicles (tanks, apcs, lavs, aavs, aavps, etc) must be operated by a crewman kit. Players that would like to pilot a jet, transportation chopper, or close air support chopper must also pick up a pilot kit to enjoy controlling jets and choppers that fly extremely similar to their real life counterparts.

Unlike other FPS brands, PR has a variety of factions that are meticulously developed to accurately resemble the gear and weaponry that's specific to each faction including:

-US Army (Modern, Vietnam era, and WW2 versions)
-US Marine Corps
-North Vietnam Army
-People's Liberation Army (China)
-British Armed Forces (Modern and Falklands War versions)
-The Bundeswehr (Germans)
-Canadian Forces
-Russian Army
-The Middle East Coalition (fictional faction that encompasses common weapons and equipment seen throughout the Middle East)
-Chechan Rebel Forces
-Iraqi Insurgents
-Taliban
-African Resistance Fighters (To be released in 1.0)
-French Armed Forces (To be released in 1.0)
-Hamas
-Israeli Defense Forces

These 16 factions can be played on two different types of gamemodes, AASv4 or Insurgency.

AASv4 focuses on large battles to sequentially take objectives from the opposing team. Deaths, destruction of vehicles, and captured flags all equate to some small or large loss of tickets depending on how vital the developer felt the asset was to the team.

Insurgency places one unconventional faction against a conventional one in a race against resources and time. Insurgent factions have limited equipment, but unlimited tickets and must prevent the BlueFor team from finding and destroying 7 caches that hold special equipment that may give the Insurgent team an advantage. While BlueFor teams have a large technological advantage, but a short supply of tickets and time to find and blow up all of the weapons caches. Organization is key for either side to win.

Maps are tailored for one of the two gamemodes listed above and many are highly accurate and detailed representations of actual battles that have taken place throughout the 20th and 21st century including:

-Fallujah West (based on the 2nd Battle of Fallujah)
-The Falklands (based on the entirety of the Falklands War)
-Battle of La Drang (based on a battle of the Vietnam War)
-Al Basarah (based on the British occupation of the Iraqi port city)

While other maps are based on fictionalized battles in real life places like:

-Helmand Province
-Baghdis Province
-Muttrah (city in Oman)
-Vadso (city in Norway)
-Beirut (city in Lebanon)

With it's emphasis placed on realism and fun first, many veterans approve of the game and help build a mature and organized community. This friendly community of veterans and gamers has been strengthened with Project Reality's most recent reworking of the voice chat service Mumble.

With PR Mumble 1.0, members of both teams can talk to their squad, other squads, through the use of proximity or squad chat, while squad leaders, platoon commanders, and battlefield commanders can keep each other informed on the movement of their own or other squads through a squad leaders channel.

Project Reality is like no other gaming experience I've ever had. Unlike many other FPS, PR forces the player to become a better teammate. The buddy system and constant call outs of what's going on are needed. If you're interested in trying the game out, there's a link to the official website down below, along with a list of videos that I believe show the best of what PR has to offer.

Hah, I didn't know this was still going. I used to play it a lot a few years back, great experience although the distances in some of the maps started to tire me eventually (especially when your only transport just rode off in a cloud of dust).

Yeah it's still moving along. A lot of people are expected to come back for 1.0.

Here's a beta skirmish of 1.0 on Operation Marlin with the new French Forces faction.

I would still play it if I didn't have so much trouble getting Battlefield 2 to work on here for some reason. It worked before on Windows 7, but now I can't figure out what's wrong.

Always enjoyed PR and I was a modder with Black Sand Studios for a while before medical problems took my focus off. Good group of guys and had a lot of fun.

Yeah they seem pretty down to Earth, how'd you get to working there?

This mod sounds like ARMA for the rest of us quasi-casual FPS players. Do they allow mods for BF3?

Unfortunately, no mods for BF3. PR isn't as "realistic" as the ACE mod for ARMA, but its control scheme is easier to manage and it's a lot more fun to play against real people.

This was exactly I was expecting! Now to find an inexpensive copy when I get more free time. I saw something for Amazon for about $15.

I worked on USI from the beginning as a 2D/3D artist which was probably the largest BF2 mod in terms of content but just never caught on for some reason. Then the team joined BSS where we started sharing content so at least some of the USI stuff was used in PR (not sure if any is still there or not though).

Just really shocked me about USI though. Probably the most fun I've had testing a mod since there were a lot of cool ideas in place for teamwork.

There were quite a few teams in BSS that shared knowledge and even helped each other out when needed so it was a great concept. I just wish BF3 had modding since I have all the time in the world now with nothing to do or look forward to.

Some of the guys at BSS are making PR2 with the CryEngine 3, you should check it out.

Might have to check this out. I stopped playing when they made it where you couldn't see more than 3 feet in front of you because of the "fog" or whatever.

I don't know, guys.

I love Battlefield and I played almost 2k hours of it (around 1800 hours), but I'd say it's time to move on.

Looks like a poor mans ARMA, think I will stick with that ... especially since ARMA 3 is releasing soon.

Looks too dated, both with graphics and controls.

It looks dated, for sure, but I find Battlefield 2's visual presentation much cleaner and better for gameplay than Battlefield 3's.

1943 looks dated and shitty but the gameplay rocks. Seriously, enjoyability can come from more than just visuals.

Best fucking mod ever. You can take your DOTA's and ARMA zombies elsewhere. Nothing rivals a 3-4hr fight over a large map with coordination that has still yet to infiltrate the shooter genre en masse.

I would even dare say that playing Project Reality ruined the FPS genre for me - a genre I've been playing constantly since Wolfenstein 3D. Nothing compares to it when the game is working as intended.

It sounds incredible. The kind of game that a dedicated group of friends could play for a decade.

Oh definitely. Even without a group of friends, the community is small enough that you get to know the regulars pretty well. I'm not friends with any of them in real life, but they make great teammates for an hour or two each night.

Start the game, join a match ... Mouse won't move. Alt + Tab out, entire UI disappears on every server. Restart game, join match and I still can't move the mouse to actually spawn.

That was fun.

It's an open beta. Expect bugs. The difference in the amount of bugs between this morning and now is pretty astounding after the update. The devs are keeping up with the reports and fixing as they're found.

Try to play now.

Got it fixed.

However I forgot how terrible the mod was, uninstalled.

It's not for the slow witted.

That's quite a snappy insult, I bet you couldn't even keep up with the milsim games and flight simulators I play. This game however is just terrible, it has nothing to do with teamwork or thinking you are a badass armchair general, the game is just boring, janky and too many of their poorly implemented realism aspects hurt the overall gameplay.

Doesn't help they use the dinosaur BF2 engine that certainly does the game no favours, not only visually but in the feel of the controls and what they are trying to accomplish. Animations are awful, asset quality is all over the place and the flight physics wouldn't even be considered acceptable for a low-budget arcade game.

Ultimately it's a mediocre game that has a niche following, like most 'realistic' games however this one excels at exactly nothing -- Luckily it's free.

Lets keep it calm people!

Use to play this mod back in the day, glad they are finally releasing 1.0. I think they did a good job at the models, animations, assets for spare time modding.

Is this mod still like 4 times the size of Battlefield 2 itself?

It's much bigger than BF2. I believe it's twice as big as BF3.

The game now supports 100 player servers as well. Which makes for some really epic battles over points on a map.

In response to Sethos, I'm glad you're playing a better game. I enjoy this one. Being high and mighty about "playing better mil-sims" does not make you better than anyone else.

Oh, funny how the tune changes when the tables are turned.

Maybe next time you shouldn't insult people's intellect with your little quips because they aren't enjoying a game you are.

The game is slow. There's a lot of things to know, figure out, and understand. It takes a few weeks to get a handle of. It's not for people who have little patience. It's an observation, and seeing how personal you're taking all of this, it's a valid one.

No, now you are just going back to your superiority stance. Hence why I tried to say; I play a lot of milsim games. I go through thousands of pages in manuals for DCS simulation, I've played ArmA for years with ACE mod, being part and leader of several clans, I play Steel Beasts with actual Danish tank commanders -- Yes, I'm sure I lack the patience going through all that and I simply can't fathom the sheer brilliance of this 7 year old janky mod.

It's just a mediocre mod in my opinion, you just can't accept that and want to turn it into a personal thing.

Never said it was better than the ones you're playing. I enjoy this one, jank and all. For a mod that's running on an eight year old engine, it's pretty remarkable how far the devs have pushed it. The same will probably be said for an ARMA 3 mod releasing a 1.0 version ten years down the line.

Did I take your comment personally? No. Did I find it annoying, especially after your somewhat insecure insistence that you know what a good milsim is and PR does not meet your standards? Yes.

Again, I'm glad you're enjoying other games that offer more, through more recently built engines (seriously). I haven't gotten that far yet in the milsim genre. What games would you suggest that PR players should look into?

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my CLAN in the MLG, and I’ve been involved in numerous Millsims on Enemy Servers, and I have over 300 confirmed kills in Operation Flashpoint. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire clan. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret botnet across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my 5 button mouse. Not only am I extensively trained in combat simulators, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the OP TIC Clan's many assets, and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of Gaming Side, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

The core essence I was trying to convey was the fact that I had the 'credentials' for the comment. That sounds completely weird but when you hear most people comment on a niche / simulator game, it usually stems from not having the patience or not being into simulators. I wasn't trying to cement the games I play as better but just to establish I'm well buried in the slow paced simulation genre myself. So my comment on the game could be taken as a valid comment on the quality of the mod itself and not just because I dislike the genre.

That aside, for a PR alternative it's definitely ArmA 2 + ACE Mod + ACRE + JSRS Sound Mod. Then you have a fantastic combination. Obviously you can then move to ArmA 3 when the time comes but right now ArmA 2 is the place to go. While the only downside you'll find is that most other games don't have the natural integration of teamwork like PR, for the ArmA experience to excel you definitely need a clan or team to play with however when you find that, you will have some of the most amazing gameplay experiences possible. Plus the game goes from small co-op scenarios, to huge battles, to versus, to ... well, anything you can think of.

Check out dslyecxi's channel, so many great videos to show off ArmA when 'done properly' http://www.youtube.com/user/Dslyecxi/videos ( Some more serious than others ).

Still, it wasn't to downplay your PR experience. If you enjoy the game and have had those amazing teamwork experiences that I know comes from these types of games, I can see why you like it. I just had to air my opinion regarding the mod. So I apologize for the hostility.

jesus man give it up. So he doesn't like the mod as much as you do? Have you ever heard of different opinions?
