I liked Hulk Vs. a lot more than Planet Hulk. The second half featuring Wolverine is really great.

Gargoyles intro - before Avatar the Last Airbender, Gargoyles and Batman TAS showed that cartoons aimed at a more grown up audience could be awesome!

This show was brilliant when it was in syndication for 2 seasons. Then the people at CBS decided "Let's put it on CBS on Saturdays and get great ratings!" So they changed it... ruined it... and then cancelled it. Boy was it great before Goliath Chronicles.

They did the same shit to Conan the Adventurer

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

The power to travel through time... It can be used for the good of humanity, or just selfishly abused. While many may fantasize about obtaining such a power, it has become nothing less than reality for otherwise-normal schoolgirl Konno Makoto.

After a fated event, her life takes a turn for the extraordinary. Though she initially uses her power to literally "leap" into the past and change little things in order to make her life easier, she soon has to face the fact that changing the past can have drastic consequences.

Memories

From Katsuhiro Otomo, acclaimed creator of Akira, comes an animated masterpiece; three short stories all put together as a series of Memories. Part one is titled Magnetic Rose, a science fiction tale that tells a chilling story of love, loss, and the unwillingness to forget. Part two is titled Stink Bomb - a tongue-in-cheek story of a chemical researcher who is just looking for a way to get rid of his cold... so why is everybody around him dying? Story three is titled Cannon fodder, and is an introspective tale about modern wars and simply following orders. Music conducted by Yoko Kanno, Jun Miyake, Hiroyuki Nagashima, and Takkyu Ishino.

Sword Of The Stranger

The story is set in the Sengoku period. A rounin called Nanashi (meaning 'nameless') saves a young boy Kotarou at an abandoned temple. Kotarou has no family, is pursued by a mysterious militia organization from China and hires Nanashi as his bodyguard. Amongst the men who pursue Kotarou is a man called Rarou, a skilled warrior with blond hair and blue eyes. He obeys an old man called Byakuran and is a member of the Chinese militia. Unlike his companions in the militia, he isn't serving any Emperor and just wants to fight with the strong.

Paprika

In the near future, a revolutionary new psychotherapy treatment called PT has been invented. Through a device called the "DC Mini" it is able to act as a "dream detective" to enter into people's dreams and explore their unconscious thoughts. Before the government can pass a bill authorizing the use of such advanced psychiatric technology, one of the prototypes is stolen, sending the research facility into an uproar. In the wrong hands, the potential misuse of the device could be devastating, allowing the user to completely annihilate a dreamer's personality while they are asleep. Renowned scientist, Dr. Atsuko Chiba, enters the dream world under her exotic alter-ego, code name "PAPRIKA," in an attempt to discover who is behind the plot to undermine the new invention.

Millenium Actress

When Studio Gin'ei commissions filmmaker Gen'ya Tachibana to make a documentary in commemoration of its 70th anniversary, he travels to a secluded mountain lodge to interview the idol of his youth, the enigmatic Chiyoko Fujiwara, who was the studio's leading lady from the 1930s until the 1960s. As Chiyoko reminisces about her life, Tachibana and his cameraman suddenly find themselves on a rich and dazzling journey through time. Chiyoko's films and personal memories intertwine with present events and stretch the boundaries of reality.

Some of her fans are displeased with this decision though, particularly a stalker named Me-Mania. This is the best X-mas move ever. I have really been aching to rewatch this film.

Superman vs The Elite
Batman: Under the Red Hood
Wonder Woman
Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths
Justice League Doom
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and Apocalypse
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker

You cant really go wrong with the animated DC stuff.

When you're ready for a series check out all of Justice League Unlimited, you can also check out the first two seasons of JL, season 2 in particular is great.

This was a fantastic movie. Flash has some great lines, and Owlman was fantastic.

The 80's DnD cartoon series was pretty great too.

all the satoshi kon recommendations are great

also satoshi kon's paranoia agent series. it's short (only one season, like 10 or so eps) and fascinating.

I had no idea HBO made an animated show, yet alone a Spawn series.

It's pretty good too. Season 2 and 3 aren't as good story wise IMO, but season 1 was great.

HBO has had a couple animated shows. Life and Times of Tim which is amazing, Ricky Gervais Show, and they had a program called Spicy City around the same time as Spawn.

It's a short but good.

Ghibli's Only Yesterday. This movie is definitely different from what Ghibli usually does since it was made for adults. Really underrated but just as good.

La Maison en Petits Cubes

Another short. No dialogue at all but delivers

I would also recommend 5 centimeters per second but I feel that it may not fit your criteria. However, the manga version, part 3, would definitely be more for adults. Still recommend it since it's only an hour.

Edit: I also recommend Persepolis. I thought I would be the first but glad I'm not.

Gargoyles intro, Gargoyles and Batman TAS showed that cartoons aimed at a more grown up audience could be awesome!

Both Goliath and Al Simmons (Spawn) were voiced by the same actor too.

Batman TAS is a good choice too. My favorite series in the above three listed.

All the old Looney Tunes animated shorts are great to watch no matter how old you are. Early Ren & Stimpy too (IMO)

Young Justice is definitely a must.

really hope the show isn't dead yet.

Legend of Korra is great too.

Edit: And Archer. Archer is AMAZING.

All Star Superman is good. The comics or the animated movie.

From animes, Yamato 2199 (remake from the 70s cartoon) is very cool, without whining teenagers. But has not a oficial release in the west...

Too bad there are so many anime recommendations, as I have a very hard time watching it after I burned myself a couple of years ago watching anime 24/7.

Great recommendations though!

I've already seen since before though:
Under The Red Hood
Iron Giant
Year One
All-Star Superman
Archer
Mask of the Phantasm
Akira
Paranoia Agent
Dark Knight Returns
Transformers The Movie
Waltz With Bashir
A Scanner Darkly (even made an RTTP)

So keep it coming! Definitely gonna watch the Justice League movies.
